Understanding More About Motorbike Tyres

- I have been learning a lot about tyres and I thought it might make a useful video for others. In the past I had always looked at tyre tread and cracking on the rubber, but as I compare my old and new tyres, it turns out there is a little more to check for.

Metzler M7s on my bike from PO, let me say that I'm thankful he put good tires on it lol. They are a few years old but the tread is still like new. Once I did some homework on the actual tires and watched people testing them, I was out leaning further the very next day lol

Hi Tamsen, yes the yellow dot goes to the valve, this is the recommended position for the least use of weights to balance the wheel from the manufacturer. The red dot is the second option. I think the tyre pressure you refer to is the maximum bead seating pressure. Have you considered a Nitrogen fill on your tyres? I know that this will invoke a lot of criticism from your followers mainly due to cost but the fact is that Nitrogen contains no moisture so during cold weather your tyre pressures remain the same as during hot weather. This is not the case when filled with air from a compressor especially if it does not have an efficient water separator. I follow your channel religiously as I have an 02 sv650s the same colour as yours. I am 64 and passed my DAS last week. My second trip out on my Triumph Trophy and I dropped it on a U turn due to I am sure the deformation of the tyres as you described. My first trip was for the MOT where the inspector told me the tyres were deformed but still legal. The bike did not want to corner on bends or especially roundabouts. Wish I had seen your clip first and bought new tyres. Many thanks Mark.
hi Tamsen; I have just put BT 023s on my Bandit; the old tyres looked fine but when I checked they were made in 2009!! so I decided to change them. The difference in ride is fantastic; like riding a different bike. Tyres are so important that little contact patch keeping you upright. So many people are keen to do upgrades to their bikes but I would rather spend the money the essentials Tyres; Brakes etc. Best Wishes Paul.
I agree, the difference in the ride was amazing! It is an upgrade which often gets over looked as it is not so glamorous but very important!

Thanks for the tips...didn't know of the manufacturing year on them...will check it on my racing bike since i had a crash a couple of months ago on the circuit because of rear end slip...need to check if the tires are old or it was my fault accelerating to much on the exit...or maybe both. :D have a nice day

Thanks Tamsen, as always I learned something and it's great to see your vids. I'm glad to see your shoulder is now healed (enough to try those new tyres) Did you do the work yourself or just remove the wheels? Also what make is your paddock stand. I'm thinking of upgrading to an "Abba" with attachment which lifts the front wheel. I fitted my new "YSS" rear shock absorber today, so test ride soon. :>)
I had booked to go to the track day at Thruxton so I had no time to prep, I removed the wheels and took it to Southwest motorcycles for them to put the tyre on. I have all the kit so I am sure it will be a future video!! I love the ABBA stand, it hold the bike so firmly whilst I work on it. Can't wait to hear how how the suspension works out!
The rear shock really improves the "feel" of the bike, seemingly on all surfaces and speeds, especially fast swooping corners. >:)
