Sonic Dimensions... this Sonic fangame man, my channel just loops right back to it at some point in time. To keep it short, Sonic Dimensions is the first Sonic fangame... heck, the first Sonic related content I ever did back when I was just starting my channel and didn't know what to do... and also the first video(s) that went viral on my then, less than 300 subs channel that sent me plummeting into the all engulfing black hole known as Sonic The Hedgehog and (un)fortunately shaped my CZcams channel niche
Tangent aside... what are the changes this time around. Not many, mostly QoL improvements such as rolling having more of an effect on momentum, some revamped level design and props here and there, music changes, ambient sound, but there is a cool addition with the skill tree in the hub, it's neat... but really I can barely feel a difference gameplay wise. But the developer did promise that Sonic Dimensions 5.1.1 will have the Act 2 stages fully completed so expect that in the near future.
You know I've praised Sonic Dimensions in the past and for its merits it accomplished back then, I still do. But I'm less enthusiastic about it now (besides the fact that I've replayed this fangame way too many times), because for all its polish, I've come to realize... it's kinda shallow... maybe it's me and also because Sonic Dimensions is very fair with its enemy placement now and ranking system (because I know for a fact new players will struggle to get S ranks and avoid certain deaths), but it just highlights one of the boost Sonic games greatest weaknesses... everything you do is binary... you're either boosting or you're not.
Why am I coming to this conclusion... well, thank an indie game called Pizza Tower. All the appeal Sonic Dimensions had for me (fun level design focused on flow and reaction, challenging S rank requirements, neat achievements), Pizza Tower has that multiplied by 100 with a more nuanced movement system that doesn't offer you speed at a single press of a button. Yeah, the keywords here are "nuanced movement system" and another reason why I strayed more from the modern boost Sonic games and into other Sonic games or just outright simping for SRB2. Also, it is absolutely unfair to compare a Sonic fangame to a fully fleshed indie game... a very popular one no less... it's just that Sonic Dimensions honestly reminds me of Pizza Tower and I mean that as a good thing. Because despite my gripes, Sonic Dimensions is a very focused game that knows what it wants to be and that means a lot when I can't even say that about the main Sonic games.

I made an old fan game back in 2019-2020 called Sonic Oxilary which was kind of a modern styled 2D fan game that had twelve playable characters in it and played a bit similarly to Dimensions. I stopped working on it to make way for my indie project but I do have plans to soft reboot it soon. If you want to play something like Dimensions that has more playable characters, give it a shot.
To me, the later builds seem to take a lot of inspiration from Sonic Vs. Darkness: True Nightmare Revived, which is good because that was always a game I'd like to see still developed like Dimensions. Glad to see this fangame's still getting updates! Almost makes we wish we got something like this instead of Superstars.

I can definitely get where your coming from in the description since i've been feeling that way about boost sonic gameplay for a while now for pretty much the same reasons as you, which isn't a knock against the person who made this mind you, this game looks real solid and i'm pretty sure the people who are really into this sort of thing will like it but i've always leaned more into platformer Sonic over gotta go fast Sonic.

Reading the video description, your thoughts on the game comparing it to pizza tower are totally right. You're clearly different from most channels that review sonic content since you can give out a well thought out opinion on the game you played and won't sugarcoat things.
Great vid! If you really want a nice challenge and fun time, id reccomend playing without the boost funny enough. The changes to momentum, the ability to uncurl, and the spin charge skill essentially being a better drop dash. it feels way more satisfying to keep top speed and makes the s-ranks harder imo

I’m in the same general camp as you with regards to the way Modern Boost Sonic plays, and I think it’s a crying shame because with only some modest tweaks to the way ring collecting and the Boost work, we could have the best of both the Adventure Style and Boost Style gameplay.
Also, yeah. This fan game looks and sounds nice, but that’s not a particularly high bar to clear, since the vast majority of those clean sounds and visuals - especially the sprite work - are ripped wholesale from official Sonic games (in particular the Advance trilogy).
This also leads into a problem that I personally have with the general level design, which is that feels…for a lack of a better description…vague, and often lacking in unique set-pieces or gimmicks.
Complaints aside, this is a perfectly fine fan game. I just really wish there were more originality on display, instead of something that feels kinda cookie cutter by modern standards.
A measure that i use to determine how much this game has changed is looking at the start of Radiant Falls 1. A section of mostly spectacle, and not very much gameplay:
Back when it all began in 2.0.1 the start of radiant falls was 1 had a little back and forth and clear upper and lower paths that did not converge.
In 3.0.1 and 3.1.1, the opening back and forth was made optional.
In 5.0.1, the upper and lower paths converge, simplifying this section further.
Now in 5.1.0, any trace of that back and forth is gone and the entire section can be navigated using a single jump to a dash ring.
By 5.1.1 (or 6.0.1 or whatever is next), this section will be completely automated, and you will just land on top of the first red ring. (this is a joke)
Basically how Sonic Forces development actually went (Mortar Canyon being an exact example of this).

I found this game when I stumbled across the previous version of the game, hands down the best Sonic fan game in my personal opinion. I’d probably say i slightly prefer this over Sonic Vs Darkness, but that fan game itself is phenomenal as well.

I don't know about the dev and how they're doing but reading the Deviantart page for Sonic Dimensions and they promise a lot more things with this fangame and it honestly has me excited.

@@MariusUrucu I played both of those already, I liked the latter but the former had a lot of flaws that made me dislike it (such as the forced partner system and that god awful version of Robotnik Winter Zone Act 2). Any other good recommendations that are more obscure?
@@MontyMoleLoreMaster Well, there's obviously Sonic Robo Blast 2, my personal favorite, Sonic Before and After The Sequel, Sonic Time Twisted, Sonic GT, Sonic P-06, Sonic 3D in 2D, Sonic The Hedgehog Classic 1 and 2... and there are a lot more, these are just at the top of my head
