Oof, I've been there. I wrote my first short story intermittently over the course of several years, and every time I revisited the project after putting it on pause for several weeks at a time, I felt like a different writer who just hated what past me created and I couldn't resist the urge to just keep rewriting the same parts over and over again until future me approved it.
I have been going through some really serious burnout with school; I'm three quarters away from finishing my master's, this is what I've worked for and wanted forever yet I'm struggling to find the motivation to even go to class. It's hard because this is something I am so passionate about and have sacrificed so much for but I can't force myself to feel connected to recently. Right now all I can do is take each day as it is, do my best, and take time to rest. I have gone through this before in the last six years. I know it gets better. I know it does. And it will for you too. I just want to tell you that I love your videos, I have for so long, and I absolutely love your books. This series is a gem and I can't wait to see how it ends. When you write for yourself I feel like that genuine voice comes through and that ultimately makes the magic real. Sending you all the good energy. Take care of yourself first and the rest will work itself out

"We're gonna be close for a while." Uuugh, I feel that. That's where I'm at with my dissertation. Trying to maintain hope and acknowledge all the work I've done, but... I'm gonna be near the end for a while yet. But you've got this! Fun is so so important. If things are fun, everything else falls into place.
I published my first book last year and immediately realized I did everything wrong... I published the genre I was convinced I needed to write to sell to the current selfpub world, I rushed it to get it out for an arbitrary time I set, and I hated every second of it because it wasn't something I wanted people to read from me, it was simply what I thought people would pick up. I unpublished it, and just stopped watching the writing community for a while to reset, so this is one of the first videos I've watched in a while.
I'm trying to ease back into writing again, but for me. No expectations or plans or deadlines... I might publish something again, I might not. But I want to have writing as my escape again, either way. I totally hear what you're saying!
I really appreciate your honesty and transparency here. Writing is hard enough much less making a career out of it.
When you have success with a series - it almost paralizes you because there are so many expectations. I wish I could write the way I used to before I started publishing. I'm over 40 books in, and I'm doing my best to bring that back. It's hard - very, very hard. Mindset is so hard to get right. Good luck! Burnout's a bitch, and the expectations do nothing to help it.

I am currently writing the last book in a series and everything you're describing...the mental block, the pressure, the lack of fun, etc... I am going through that. Mine has gotten so bad that I can't even write at all. But wow. I understand what you've been feeling.

I'm finishing the 6th draft of my first book right now. I can feel it nearing the end of edits before sending it to agents and I feel like I'm running on fumes because I've read it so many times 😭I really needed this motivation to push me to finish. I am such a huge fan of this series and have read each of the books twice now so I am very familiar with them.

I highly recommend The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. He reads the audiobook himself, and it's less than 6 hours long.
Hi Katie! I just want to leave you a message of HOW MUCH I feel you and how much I ADMIRE YOU! Thank you for putting it out the real thing here (as always) and letting us know that you are currently struggling, as in this case me and other people who love you and your work can send you positive energies! I want to see you succeed and I want you to know that there are many of us who want you to be in balance, harmony and ease. To ease the pressure on you, there are some astrological aspects (many actually) which hinder creative endeavors currently. I believe that our will can overcome them, but pls know that we have been swimming upstream since whole f-ing january. Katie, we're in the same boat. I have until the end of July to finish (like really finish-finish) all my author's edits before the book goes to the proofreader, and then comes out in October, aaaand... I got 1/4 of the edits done without having even touched the major changes that need to be done mid-act 2. Keeping my fingers crossed for you (for us both tbh, haha). We can do it! 💪🙌
I hope you keep going at your pace to find the rhythm that works for you. I agree, keeping the excitement for the book or finding that excitement again can be tough. I hope you hang in there and find the right Beta Readers!
I felt this.. I’m on my fourth draft of my second poetry book and it’s no where near finished. I’m finding it hard to write and to make this project how I see it in my head. But the good thing is that I’ve finally decided on a cover.. keep going Katie ! ❤️

It’s definitely crossed my mind! I’m thinking that’s a call I’ll need to make closer to the release date if the book just isn’t where I want it to be. I really hate the idea of pushing it back but I hate the idea of something going out that isn’t the best it could be more 🤷🏻♀️

Im writing a last book in the series and it is sooo much harder even though i know exactly the plot. Its just a different animal. There is extra pressure but as you said its like mental pressure. Its like you have to play head games with yourself.
It’s sooo different than any other book I’ve written! Totally underestimated it 😅
it's uncanny how similar our situation is haha. Like down to the book and timeline. ya girl is struggling and had to rework my beginning today to try and get something done. I have a single beta reader that can accomodate my super quick turn around next month, I am also planning to put a post on patreon saying "sooo... sorry but y'all have like a weeks time, can you help?" 😅
@Katesbookdate : Question--How does Kickstarter help as a tool for authors? I've heard of Kickstarter recently and I know it helps people with creative projects (such as funding for short films). But I didn't know they assist authors as well. Can you explain how that works? It would really be helpful.

Also, I know you've written so many books but I have to advise to NEVER go back and revise before you've written the end oml I spent years on a novel because I made that mistake it's so painful for me
