    The jump start is something of a lost art and reminded me of a great moment I had a year or so ago. I was walking home from a local brewery to me and I was puzzled to see four or five burley lads running along the road pushing a mark one Ford Ka with a girl in the drivers seat. They all, apart from the girl, looked pretty half cut and it looked like they had been pushing it for some considerable way. "What's up with it?" I shouted across to them. "The battery is flat, I think" one of the sweaty lads called back. "Are you trying to bump start it?" I asked, and they all looked baffled at me. "What's that?" the girl asked. I proceeded to try and explain it but as she was clearly a new driver and had never heard of the dark art of the bump start she said "Could you do it for us?" I laughed and jumped into the drivers seat and ignoring the slightly thorny issue of "Starting a car under the influence" had the Ka sparked up and running like a dream within 10 yards of them shoving it along. As I continued my walk home I saw the Ka pass me again two or three times beeping its horn and with slowly reducing numbers of drunk rugby looking lads cheering and shouting "Nice one Mate" in the back. Nice to know us oldies are still useful for something LOL

    I’ve got a suggestion for the 2 car garage that goes thusly;
    You’re a music producer who lives in the hills above Monte Carlo, and you regularly commute up and down through the numerous tunnels that surround the area. You need two cars, first one needs the best listening experience for you and you’re passengers within the confines of the car, the second needs to produce the best noise out of the exhaust as you thrash up and down the mountains, budget is unlimited

    Good morning, addicts. Regarding Mini start-up procedure, it’s all about the thrust bearings on the crank, if you’ve got a big beefy clutch like the one on your Madgewick or my 1963 rally Cooper putting your foot on it, loads the thrust bearings and adds drag to the crank. Also a bit unhealthy for a cold engine.

      Good intel!

    • @BrendanEvan
      @BrendanEvan Před 3 měsíci +1

      More info based on the initial comment by Marc above:
      “The clutch thrust bearing (also known as the release bearing or the throw-out bearing) is a small but important part of your car’s clutch system. It is mounted on the housing of your clutch and slides on a hollow shaft. Attached to the clutch bearing is the clutch fork, which moves the clutch bearing with the help of hydraulic or cable pressure.
      While the clutch pedal is pushed down, the bearing moves inward. The bearing will apply pressure to the spring of the pressure plate, freeing the clutch disc from the flywheel and interrupting the transmission. This allows you to correctly and safely engage and switch gears.”

    • @Marcwojtanowski-ho2mb
      @Marcwojtanowski-ho2mb Před 3 měsíci

      To be honest, it shouldn’t make too much of noticeable difference on a nice fresh battery and a healthy starter motor. Do check in with Nick again just in case. It would be bad if your crank is going tight on the thrusts when loaded by the clutch. Best practice is definitely no clutch on start up though.

    • @Marcwojtanowski-ho2mb
      @Marcwojtanowski-ho2mb Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@BrendanEvansorry Brendan you misunderstood, I’m referring to the two thrust bearings that control the for and aft location of the crank, rather than the clutch release bearing (sometimes also referred to as the thrust bearing) Sorry it’s getting boring and technical! It’s a weak point in a tuned Mini.

I always remember my dad (when I lived in Belgium at the time..) ,back in early 90s, once raced a Charade Gtti off the lights in our Mercedes W124 300E, was dead level up to around 150km/h.. My dad was dumbfounded at the time.. I can still see it happening to this day, and where! Fcuking brilliant!!!

    My neighbour when I was at uni over 20 years ago worked for Porsche PR in Reading. He would bring back truly awesome cars everyday and occasionally he’s take me out for a spin. The highlight though was the night before one of the early Goodwood FOS events and, no word of a lie, a 911 GT1 was on the drive opposite my living room. I bought a shoddy 924 with my student loan and he gave me a genuine Porsche key ring as a gift. What a lad. Steve, you were the man!

    Another brilliant episode. Been slowly working my way through these episodes since discovering then in December last year. I work nightshift and arriving home at 6am and getting another episode watched before bed has been great morning entertainment. I agree with current cars being too stiff. My current car, a 2019 Megane R.S.280 (Sport chassis) as I test drove the cup version and on Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire B roads it was far too stiff and liked to wander all over the road with the LSD, luckily the standard car doesn't have these tendencies and rides brilliant for a hot hatch. Anyways, keep up the great and fun podcast guys !!! 👍

    I have a jump start story, setting is in trinidad and Tobago, we had a flash flood one night and I Woke up only to find my Toyota Levin wedge up against my parents Ford Taurus, a meter underwater. I managed to get the brain out and over the course of two days strip the car to bare metal and unload a pressure washer into the cab of the car. Clearing out all scorpions and snakes from all the crevices.
    Eventually, after drying the brain. I tried to turn it over but nothing. I managed to gather a friend to try and push start, but still no joy.
    It eventually turned dark outside and if I’m honest a crate of beer later. We thought to tow the vehicle down the highway at 30mph and kick start in 3rd gear. Although optimistic, I bought this was a terrible idea but to my surprise. The engine roared into life spitting mud water and fire from the exhaust. Can’t explain the joy you receive when your effort are finally awarded. I was so excited that I almost lost control of the car as I hadn’t put the interior back in and was sitting on the same plastic beer crate that we polished earlier that day.

    Another classy episode, many, many thanks to all you wonderful chaps!!! Having totally abandoned TV some years ago and rather bored with watching predictable fictional films, my discovery of "Addicts" some 10 episodes or so ago has been a godsend. It's a wonderful gateway into the weekend, glass of wine in hand. I just wish I had Neil's budget for cars!!! Pushing 50 I figured my dream of a owning a Ferrari or Porsche had perhaps bolted, so I invested in a fast motorbike which was going down very well indeed but I now realise what I really want is a Tuthill Porsche....

    Manish - if you want to go the full Mad Max you need a Ford Falcon GT Hardtop XA, XB or XC. Little known fact - the designer of the Mad Max cars based on the Falcon was also the designer of the Mercedes-Benz C215 CL Class - Peter Acadipane. So a weird reference to Mad Max could also be a Mercedes-Benz CL600 with the V12.

    The Charade GTti came out in the mid 80’s and was the fastest production 1 litre. It had a 993cc 3 pot engine producing nearly 100 bhp and did 0-60 in under 8 seconds. It was also quicker than a Vauxhall Mk2 Cavalier SRi 130 and the Mk3 Cavalier GSi2000.

    2 car garage suggestion. A slight tweak to the usual format, and maybe something closer to the dilemma most of us face!
    You are a father of 2 young children, you’re a middle management IT professional and take the train to work. You have a busy scheduled and your time is precious, you love nothing more than a track day with mates or a Sunday morning B road blast. You need one practical family car for the wife to mostly use and another car which is purely for your own enjoyment, bonus points from Mrs if it does have back seats for children on the odd occasion. The catch…You don’t have oodles of cash in the Bank, however, in a recent house moved you managed to pull £25k equity out of the house and can afford £600 per month to spend on finance arrangement(s). Happy hunting.

    Excellent as usual. Two car garage (as per the brief) Subaru Forester Gen 2 - SG (pre face lift) 2.5XT manual with cloth seats, pano roof, no sat-nav. Not an STi as too obvious. The 2.5XT is just as quick but looks like a boggo 2.0, sounds like an un fettled Imprezza STi and drives like one but in a mundane looking, 5 seater, mini SUV - raised estate car body. That leaves £127,500 to source a Superformace GT40, kosher continuation, just about do-able on the money. One of (if not) the most visceral, exciting cars i have ever driven and the only American Muscle worth owning.
    As for ride quality, the French do it so well because their cars are CHEAP. Cheap = Light = Softer springs. A C4 Cactus, 5 seater SUV weights the same as an MX5! That's why French cars ride so well. The UK have an obsession with vast, overweight SUV's and large cars in general = weight = firm springs to control all that mass. The British buy large heavy cars for Kudos and 'look at me' status. They have the choice of lighter French & Japanese cars but many have an inferiority complex and just can't do it.
    As far start up. A key or button are acceptable but the ideal scenario is 3-5 seconds of noises and churning while you wonder if it will catch, followed by 3-5 seconds of spluttering and extreme noise as the engine wakes up, followed by 3-5 seconds of throttle control until the idle settles. You have to feel you are part of the process but conversely 15 seconds is enough anxiety for anyone starting their own car.

    The starter motor on my 1971 VW Camper failed on day one of a two week trip around a bit of Europe. On route to Le Mans for the 24hrs we had to push start it in a services carpark. Every time after that when we stopped we made sure it was pointing down hill. Occasionally it would work, but the next time it wouldn't. After the 24hr we headed through Germany to a VW show at the top of the Moselle Valley. Mid way up the valley in a gravel carpark for a Castle it failed again. We had a nice slope to push it down, but there was a long drop into the valley at the end, we also had to negotiate a line up of the local Weismann Car Club outing. Managed to start it and found a VW dealer nearby to try and get it up on a ramp to have look. They couldnt help but directed us to an air cooled Porsche garage in a barn. They put it on the ramp, located the problem (broken wires) and fixed it for us. We pressed beer money into there hands and headed on our trip. After the VW show we stopped on the way back at the Nurburgring where I managed a sub 20 minute lap in a 50yr old 2 ton camper!

    2-car garage suggestion:
    Since the used 992 turbo with around 10k miles is the logical benchmark purchase as the best sportscar for the money.
    I would challenge you to get options under the same price tag.
    You can only buy one car for your garage and under that price, it does not need to be the full amount used but should be only one car.
    You should be one for each scenario:
    - 1 logical pick that is not the 992 turbo
    - 1 if you were a family person with 2 teens
    - 1 if you were a man
    - 1 if you were a woman
    - 1 irrational option that you would actually love to take

    I have a 2011 Lexus LS 460, and I love the ride. It just glides along. I mostly drive on (US) highways, so I was pleasantly surprised by the handling when I first drove on mountain roads. It took curves way above the suggested speed limit with no hint of being out of sorts. I've taken it on a few drives of 400 miles in a day, and I always get out of the car feeling relaxed. I'll keep this car for at least another five years. What's next? Maybe a Toyota Century, for some V12 floatiness.

    Yes on cars being too stiff. A BMW 5 series is simply terrible in M-Sport guise for everyday driving - too big wheels and stiff suspension.
    If I could purchase an SE spec (softer, smaller wheels) but with M Sport looks, I'd be a happy man as the way an SE wafts along rubbish roads is magestic, yet still damped well enough for high autobahn speeds.
    Thats probably the best example of how you can see the difference in the real world.

    Re. Suspension, I fondly remember a whole series of generations of Peugeot cars that were suspended by torsion bars or coil springs and clever multi valve dampers, think 309, 205, 306, 405 etc. those cars were all characterised by excellent ride quality, but also excellent handling. They rolled a bit, they pitched a bit but in that movement they communicated with the driver the limits of grip. I think that balance has been lost with modern cars.

    As for the daily, and because you’re living in 2024 and will buy it through your company, is has to be electric.
    The budget is 75k pounds. There’s nothing much to say about it except it won’t be a Tesla and you would rather have a normal looking, quality car that’s electric then some egg shaped VW or Mercedes.
    The range won’t matter that much but you’ll need the cargo space so an SUV type thing would be preferable but not mandatory.
    And for the main course. You always loved cars, you love the experience of cars, the sound and just appreciating special metal with 4 wheels. Having done some totally amateur style kart racing you can drive just a smidge above average (but not much).
    The budget is about the euros equivalent of 115k pounds, but don’t forget cars down here are a bit more expensive than in britain so I imagine that would be more like 80k pounds.
    Conditions:
    - Has to be a convertible
    - has to have back seats no matter how small they are (there is a 2 year old that has to be able to get back there or the opportunities to get out and drive will be few and scarce). It really doesn’t matter how small the seats are as long as they have seat belts.
    - Has to the naturally aspirated. There will be a time and a place to experience real turbo cars, but for this, the first one, naturally aspirated is the only way to go.
    - Due to amazing tax laws in your country it has to be at least 10 years old, anything newer and with an engine bigger than 2.0 litter will pay almost as much tax as the price of the car.
    - manual or automatic. Doesn’t matter as long as it’s not an robotised, single clutch, impossible to use in traffic kind of thing.
    - last of all. It has to have emotion. Hearing the octanes reverberating on the walls is much more important that going around the corner 10km/h faster. If it takes one more second to 60 it’s just more time to appreciate open throttle.
    When you get in it it has to feel like a special occasion, even if it’s the 1000 time (I’m looking at you Porsche 911!)

    @manesh wrong Mitsubishi! I bought the very first Mitsubishi Sigma sold in the UK (H929 KAD) from CCC back in April 91. JC reviewed it (and called it a Stigma) but I loved all the electronic stuff it had. Had it for 3 years, did 96,000 motorway miles in it with the only issue being warped front discs every three months, always fixed under warranty. #goodolddays

    You do not put on a clutch when starting any car. Foot on the clutch puts pressure on the axial bearing in the engine, which is not lubricated when the engine is standing still and is usually just a plain bearing. Of course, modern cars have a "safety thing" which makes it impossible to start the engine without pressing the clutch.... but if you can, avoid the clutch on startup.

    On the subject of stiff suspension nowadays, could it be that the computer models that help design the suspension love the low tyres in their model as it eliminates a variable that they don't want to play with? Larger sidewalls make the tyres more pliable and that helps enormously with the comfort. I remember my Outback from the 2000s that had it and whatever you would think of the way it drives, that part of the setup made it comfortable. I would love to see taller tyres come back into fashion.

    What is the difference between a jump and a bump start ? I always thought a jump start involved leads and batteries and a bump start involved pushing , despite the fact that a bump start could well involve jumping into the vehicle . Yours , Percival P Pedant (retd.)

    I've been truly enjoying these conversations about cars from a european perspective. How's this for an idea for an aussie 2 car garage. Unlimited budget for 2 cars. One is to allow you to take a sneaky drive around Bathurst when the local police officer has headed off for a coffee and isn't parked halfway down Conrod Straight and the other is a journey from Darwin to Adelaide, with all the addicts, remembering that parts of that road have no speed limits and the road temperatures are off the scale.

    2 car garage
    You are a famous British writer living in London without a car but the villa you have just bought in Cortina for the skiing holydays has a two-car garage. Since you probably won’t be driving 1000 miles to get there and use a plane instead your two cars just have to get you around Cortina. You like cars from the 70s and 80s as they remind you of your youth. Budget is 100k.

    Pushing the clutch in on startup pushes forward on the crankshaft causing drag on the crankshaft thrust bearings with no oil pressure supporting them. You shouldn’t do it in anything. If your car has a clutch pedal switch that prevents startup, it should be (if possible) deactivated and the car should be started in neutral.
