I'd be fine with a review of devastator to round things out. They are ropey but they are a little out of the context of getting them combined as a kid when transformers all looked like that.
G1 Devastator (not the action master) is a mess. He looks super impressive for the time, especially compared to the minibots and all the minispies, but as far as six-bot combiners from the same era go, I think Puzzler and the Train team do it better in different ways.
I got Tonkanator as a birthday present and do I like G1 Constructicons... yes? No? Yes. Maybe... Individually the vehicles are great, the robot modes for them... they vary. Devastator sat on the shelf, looks nice, not the best but there is something nice about a more uniform combiner. The combination though, the actual doing it, playing with it... SUCKS. All the extra pieces feel and look crap, the connections are all awkward and there's so little you can do to mess with it and I mean that in comparison to other G1 combiners which are all brick-like grenades as is. Regarding Tonkanator colours, I like 'em. But when I was a kid and owned the Constructicons it was the European set so Yellow fits me and I've not stuck any Autobot stickers on because (pointing at the shelf) that's Devastator, who the fuck is Tonkanator?
could the 2018 bumblebee movie be a good recommendation for someone who doesn't know transformers ? but maybe it doesn't represent the "millenia-spanning space war between two factions" aspect of the franchise that well. Still, i like the movie a bunch, even though it's clearly an iron giant rip-off lol

I'm a bit late with this one. I argue the Legacy G1 Optimus Prime might be the greatest toy of all time at a great value.

The Skybound comics ripped off Iron Giant too so the answer to make a good Transformers story is just make Iron Giant again.
