We finally have a launch date for Black Myth: Wukong! The game is launching on August 20, 2024 - so I'm back with another analysis video covering the latest trailer, sprinkled with more of my observations, theories and overly detailed thoughts on the game. Of course, my theories are just speculation and the final game can be totally different, but it's still fun to let our imaginations run wild. :)

I’ve really enjoyed these videos on the game so far. I’d love to hear you talk about DC’s Monkey Prince comic; it’s their own little spin on Journey to the West they did a year or so ago and it was super enjoyable
excellent content and expression. and when you say if villains are destined to be villains, it acturally reminds me of the Stephen Chow's movie Ji Gong The Mad Monk at 1993 in which there is this destined villain for nine life circles, one of the people jigong needs to save.

Wow, didn't knew that our Indian concepts impacted this much in Chinas culture and religious teachings.
For information Dharma is a Sanskrit word, it does mean the universal law of everything. According to Hindu philosophy it also means your duties towards your life, your loved ones etc. For example a teachers dharma is teaching and giving knowledge, a warriors dharma is to protect his or her kingdom or country etc.
Your accent is pretty natural like English is your L1.

No, the story of this game takes place after the Journey to the West, the game company adapted a new story, the main character of the game is not Wu Kong, it's another monkey to continue the previous story line, every Boos in the game can be found in the Journey to the West, in order to understand the story of the game, you have to read the original Journey to the West
@@King-xiaoa lot of what I've seen in the trailers seem like they follow an anime I've seen on Netflix called The Monkey King 2023, I'm kind of hoping they do because in it he travels to Hell and to Heaven as well, I'm a big fan of games that do that

@@EmpressXVit looks like a Pixar style film, it's very family friendly but I really think the game may follow their story, I don't know that we've seen Hell yet in BMW but we have seen a Wukong type character taking on an army in Heaven, the cartoon has a similar layout, one thing they skip over in a simplistic montage, is to become an immortal the hero has to defeat 100 demons, hence all the boss fights we see in game perhaps, just my thought

感谢你的回复。ign的指责确实是编的，真正看过原文的话就会知道，其实那是好几年前的帖子，发帖的背景是当时中国大陆有大量打着“我们的游戏有很多女玩家，所以男生们快来玩吧”这样的噱头的游戏，杨奇（游戏主创）原帖被指责的那句“这样的女玩家，不要也罢”，说的是游戏厂商捏造出来用来吸引男性玩家的“女性玩家”，骂的反而是那些把女性当做吸引男性玩家的工具，真正物化女性的无良游戏公司。
另外我又想到之前看到对于成语的形容，如何向外国人解释成语在中文中的意义，就如同文档中的“超链接”。

Although Journey to the West is a story about collecting Buddhist Scriptures, it is undoubtedly a story all about Confucian values. So I think you are missing the point of the original story and the potential point of the game. In Confucian philosophy there is a deep puzzle. Confucians believe that human nature is good but that belief cannot explain who so many people do bad things. The Confucian explanation for this is that human beings can actually be twisted by their environment and often act against their better nature. This is what the game is referring to when it says good people that don't decern between good and bad become allies of evil. The purpose of Confucians is find ways to build society so that it doesn't turn people away from their base good nature. So when Confucians believe that human nature is good it doesn't mean they think that the world is automatically good but that it always has the potential to be good.
Now how does this relate to the game. The original story of Journey to the west basically accepts uncritically that order is good. The Jade emperor and the Buda are the recognized order therefore they are good. Wu Kong although he is charismatic is not good because he is rebellious and a source of chaos. The book tantalizes us with the sexy aspects Wu Kong's character which is his honesty, bravery, freedom and loyalty but then tells us unequivocally that these are actually all frivolous traits and that to truly become good WU Kong has to submit to order. The Game is hinting stronger and stronger that it will be taking the counter point to this argument. It will critically examine order and argue in favor of Chaos as the force for good in the story.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! Focusing on chaos as a force for good would be a very interesting and creative direction for Black Myth, but your assertion that Journey to the West is a story "all about Confucian values" is not correct. The novel depicts /Chinese folk religion/ which can be generally described as a combination of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism. It is not supposed to be one specific thing. It's also important to note the author did not write the story from scratch; tales of the Monkey King and retellings of the monk's pilgramage already existed as folk stories and myths multiple centuries before the book was published. So the author was both part-novelist and part-scribe. Given how vast China was and is, especially with its different ethnic groups, various tenants of all three religions were blended and intermingled together -- and we can see them harmoniously co-existing within the novel. Buddha and boddhisatvas were present as gods alongside the Jade emperor, whose heavenly order followed a Confucian structure. The heavens were home to immortals and even Wukong himself originally sought immortality (NOT enlightenment), which is a fundamentally Daoist concept. The original text features many literary devices, poetic language, satire and allegories, thus leaving its religious symbolism very open to interpretation. So much so that many scholars continue to debate what the "point of the original story" is, but the general consensus is it's about self-improvement. Especially with each of the five main characters representing different spiritual concepts and aspects of human nature, each with their own unique vices to overcome. All this to say, I'm definitely on board that challenging order and goodness will be a theme of Black Myth given that we've seen trailers with characters rebelling against "destiny" and making a mockery of spiritual teachings. However, I believe it's a great disservice to the original novel -- and by extension, the lived experience of Chinese people all those centuries ago and the potential impact on Black Myth today -- to discount the role of other religions in favor of one.
@@EmpressXV Misunderstanding the central role of Confucianism in Chinese literature is a common mistake many that analyze Chinese literature make. The version of other religions in The Journey West are simply Chinese depictions of those religions which are the versions of those religions sanitized by Confucians.
For example Chinese Buddhism is actually uniquely Chinese. It shares very little in the way of values with Indian or Tibetan Buddhism. The easy way to see this is to see that Chinese Buddhism basically has had all the disagreements it has with Confucianism (which are many) entirely erased. The Chinese version has become entirely complimentary rather than antagonistic to Confucianism. Even in the journey west Buddha is considered essentially an equal brother to the Jade emperor and they compliment each other rather than war with each other. This is a rather unique and ridiculous Chinese depiction of religions that is common in Chinese literature. Religions don't usually interact with each other this way. In most of the world religions simply war ruthlessly against each other until one side is wiped out. You have to give credit to the Confucians for taking a different approach where they attempt instead to domesticate other religions by altering them to take on and championing Confucian values.
For any seasoned reader of Chinese literature. The main theme of the Journey West is actually not very unique and quite easy to pick up on. It is idea that for goodness to be truly good it must be supportive rather than antagonistic to the enshrined social order/hierarchy. A good example of another work that revolves around this theme is the Water Margin. Where as the Journey West is essentially in favor of the argument. The Water Margin is doubtful of the argument. The game developers here are taking a turn in the story to make it more like the Water Margin where the legitimacy of the entire enshrined order is questioned.
