- Hi guys, I am trying to find out if Fellow Ode with SSP burrs can handle espresso grind. I put it to the test with my new Gaggia Classic Pro machine and the result isn't too bad. The biggest concern that people have is motor power motor power. But for me, 140w of power is plenty for home use, especially with only 3-4 espresso grind a week. I mostly use this for filter / dripped coffee anyway so having SSP is a plus for me and I love it when I use single origin beans and light roast.
I was hunting for a new grinder for my home. I have been working from home since covid spread last year and have been using my old grinders from my old cafe that I closed down, which is little overkill for the home use. Not to mention that the retention is super poor.
I was looking in to grinders that focused more on filter coffee and can occasionally do espresso and latte. Niche Zero seems to tick most boxes except that i think it focuses more on espresso and with the conical burrs I wasn’t sure if it was the one that I want to settle with. But anyway, I went hunting to buy it to try out but it was out of stock everywhere here in thailand. Then I turn my attention to a flat burr grinders, Wilfa Uniform, it seems to have everything and with a great review from James Hoffmann I was super excited. But here in Thailand, it’s super expensive, it cost $600 USD with limited warranty. With the same price I think I could do a little better so I went hunting again and I got this grinder Fellow Ode grinders, and most of you already know the grinder is design specifically for filter coffee and the grind size doesn’t get small enough due to their unique 64MM flat burr design. I actually bought this set earlier this year before Fellow officially came up with the selling of SSP burrs. It actually said on the website that even if you change the burrs it’s still not a grinder for Espresso. I am here to test that out and see if that’s the case. I will be pulling my shots from Gaggia Classic pro that i also got to replace my old commercial espresso machine.
After this I will be updating you guys to if the Fellow ode grinder can really do good espresso without breaking down or I have to get another grinder for pulling espresso?

Nice video. Thanks for making it.
Nice! Just got my gaggia and I love it!
Just wanted to say thanks: I used this video as a manual to install MP SSP burrs in my Fellow Ode.
great stuff!
H! thanks for sharing - what is the size for the dosing cup?
Hi, I see another option with silver speed burr. Have you try that sheeper one?
Where did you get the dosing cup???
Great to see you are from Thailand ! I’m living here too ^^ Coffee equipment here is so expensive with import taxes .. how much did you get yours ? Ive seen the price about 12000thb for the grinder and 8/9000 the for the burr set
Yes, things are way too expensive here for equipments. I got it at that price but with 20% off as I got a deal from this store lifestyle.firster.com/ with their promotion code, it used to be call His.
DO you have a link for the dosing cup?
What setting do you use for filter coffee after changing of the burrs?
Between 6-8 depending on the bean type and roasting level. With light roast single origin I enjoy 6.1 with flat bed filter. With darker roast I like 7.2 :)
beautiful setting ! is the grinder fine enough for one espresso ?
Yes, it is :) going to do a review on different grind numbers too
@@tomvachsweeterlife9981 looking forward it (シ)
Hello, I'm waiting for my Ode with SSP to come :D
Just wanna know-how is your Ode perform
Making espresso occasionally till now
How is the retention while making espresso?
Thank you!
I find the retention to be different depending on the beans I used. Overall not perfect but happy enough as when I put 18g in the range out is 17.4-17.9
Somebody gotta do it
Great video! I'm literally going threw the same buying options at minute!
Have you seen James hoffmans video on the ssp burrs with the ode? Aren't you worried about the motor?
hi there, I did watched and a lot of research on the watt output so at 140W I think it's at the lower end but not too low. For my 3-4 times a week with lighter roast on finer grind usage I have no problem. But to make sure I start the motor before putting the beans in so the Ode has enough torque. If there's a problem I will be posting more video here, but currently we love the whole experience.
@@tomvachsweeterlife9981 that sounds like a good approach, I'm the same in terms of 80% brew/aeropress/frenchpress etc
I can get a wilfa uniform for £340 or the ode for £275 which do you think I should go for with those prices??
To be honest, I think they are both great. I was deciding between the two too (actually close to around 30+ grinders) but at the end I chose Fellow because of 3 factors:1) price after changing both to ssp burrs and the burrs sizes: 64mm vs 58mm 2) auto stop is around 14s for 18g coffee in Fellow, where wilfa is around 1min+. 3) I like the total look, and dosing cup experience and the knocker experience (and i can put in my modified espresso dosing cup). The good thing about wilfa is that it has 41 adjustment steps where as Fellow has 31 steps, so dialing in might be a challenge. But I was thinking of modify it so that it become step-less if I had a problem dialing in, luckily I didn’t have that problem :)
@@tomvachsweeterlife9981 awesome 👌😎 I think a video on how you dial in for what particular grind size for different brew methods would be good 👍 ie what setting for aeropress, french press, moka, clever dripper etc etc
Thanks for youre time today 👍
Will work on that!
I'm not an engineer but I don't understand what the concern everyone is saying. An x54 is rated at 120watts yet you can say it's a dedicated espresso machine.
I do have a question though, for the espresso shot in the video is that about the finest it will go? Wondering if I were to do something like a slayer shot, can it go any finer (with stepless mod) ?
The motor was not designed for espresso grinding. With the Mp burrs you can grind fine enough for espresso but constantly grinding that fine will strain the motor and decrease life expectancy.
where can you get that dosing cup?
Hi ! Having the same issue as you. The grind with default burrs are not fine enough even for my V60 (I don't do espresso). Which burrs do you think I should get. And may I ask where you get the burrs from ? Thanks.
You can get it from their official store fellowproducts.com/products/ssp-red-speed-coated-64mm-flat-brew-burrs but I got my from local coffee store.
Is this upgrade really necessary? It still looks too watery for espresso, No ? I think I will just stick to using it as pour over purpose.
Agree! But we don’t see it as an upgrade, more of a 2 in one. We are quite happy with the espresso result as we change beams often and dialing in isn’t too hard but not optimal.
Hi do you have an update on how your fellow ode with SSP is doing? I see lots of warnings that it kills the motor but haven't seen anyone say the motor has died. How's yours?
All is great, thanks. Don’t see why or how the motor would die (in engineering perspective).
@@tomvachsweeterlife9981 It's maybe the Hoffman effect. He says this guessing in his Ode review, and everyone takes it as gospel. I'll try out the unimodal burrs and see how it goes! If you haven't done the modification to make it stepless it's worth doing, very easy. If it slips when it's on use grease or electrical tape around the centre pin to add friction.
@@AUserName-fv8zj hey, I'm looking into the stepless mod. Where exactly do you put the tape to tighten it up? Could you maybe post a pic and link me?
Nearly a year on, is this still going strong for espresso use?
My stationary ssp burr wouldn't fit and I'm having to contact the companies and figure it all out. I've cleaned the unit and done everything I can think of. I definitely would not have bought this if I could do it over, lots of people online have run into the issue also.
Should have contacted fellow first. Early models weren’t compatible with ssp.
@@JT-zy2ft initially they said it would work, so I did contact them. They got it sorted with the V2 burr.
How is the motor holding up with the SSP burrs?
No problem at all. Thanks for asking
Dam if i watch this video a week ago i would of got a ode too now waiting for my niche to come in.....
niche is good!!! I wish I could have them both though hahaha
Hiya. After 3 weeks any issues? I just got both the ode and also upgrade burrs for espresso grind but am getting cold feet on upgrading because of all the reviews n warnings about the stress on the machine😔 Appreciate any advice. I would be grinding for expresso at least 2x a day.Thanks. Oh and where did you get the dosing cup from😊
Hi there, I have been using the grinder daily and I haven’t had a single problem at all 😇 I normally do a cup of filter for myself and then latte for my wife. The motor works fine as it’s 140w which is plenty for home use. But I recommend you start the motor first before putting in the beans. For the dosing cup I modified it myself, and might put a video of how to make one soon😉 Hope this help.
@@tomvachsweeterlife9981 🤩😅 eases my worries for sure!
I can’t seem the grind fine enough for espresso even when at dial #1.2 ... any advice ?I am using SSP burrs Silver Knight tho
Oh I see. But each bean is different so some bean I was at 1.1, some 1.2 and some at 2 . I think it depend on the roast of the beans and the density. I am thinking of making my one a step-less to better dial in but right now it worked well will the 9bar Gaggia. I just got the KRUVE to test out the different grind setting so will keep you posted.
Hi!! Fixed all my issues with the Ode and now coffee experience is divine! Thanks to the peeps at Yellowstuff whom I purchased grinder from, they were super helpful!! I notice you are based in BKK. Any chance you would be interested in selling another dosing cup you modified? 😉😊
So how does the now $400 Ode compare to the $418 DF64?
Ode is $300 but you need to spend $185 minimally for SSP burrs. Df64 with stock burrs are fine for espresso, but if you put in $185 SSP burrs, now you're at around $600-650.
When you spend so much on burrs you really should align them after installing before calibrating them.
Meh. If you’re referring to the marker alignment it has been shown that it does not properly align the burrs throughout the grinding range. Kind of a waste of time actually.
If you guys want me to experiment with anything or have any questions about the experience please do drop me a line.
Hey if you were to change to SSP burr set will you void the warranty?
can you show how you made the modified dosing cup? thank you
Could you measure the noise level in decibels doing an espresso grind with the SSP? It seems somewhat noisy in the video. Your phone might be able to measure in decibels.
I am confused by the offering of SSP. From what I gather there are 3 different 64mm Red Speed burrs from SSP directly (my retailer calls them "brewing", "espresso", and " multi-purpose" and then there is the SSP burrs from Fellow. Which one of those would you recommend for 1-2 daily cup pourover and 1 weekly espresso? Which one did you choose
Can you make any remarks with regards to noise levels in comparison to stock burrs?
P.S. I'm going to send you a less rusty screwdriver. LMFAO
Hahahaha it shows how little I use them though
Wonder why I’m so annoyed
Too risky of an upgrade. Should be a big disclaimer for folks watching this. If only doing occasional espresso just get a $200 hand grinder and baratza or breville for drip. Or, just stop at the Vario. It can do everything..and well
