    ABOUT THE HIGH MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD
    Hi! I’m PJ, and my family loves the homesteading life! It’s something my wife and I have always wanted to do, but we grew up with ZERO HOMESTEADING EXPERIENCE!!!!!We grew up in beautiful southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of four living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants.
    In 2019 we dipped our feet into homesteading on 1 ¼ acre lot in Utah. In 18 months we were ready to do this for real. So in 2021 we packed everything up (including our sheep) and moved to North Carolina to 12 acres and we love every inch of our homestead!
    We raise sheep and have big plans for:
    • grass-fed lamb
    • meat chickens
    • laying chickens
    • heritage breed pork
    • honey
    • vegetable garden
    • perennial food forest
    • and more
    I hope you join us on our journey, subscribe and ring the bell if you haven’t yet.

    Here for the sheeps!
    I have two young ewes & a ram...beautiful Katahdins. They were born in January-March. I'm pretty sure the ewe lambs have been bred as I run them all together. The lady I bought them from did the same. I also have a small herd (four girlies & a billy) of dairy goats. They're very small...lol. Nigerian Dwarfs. They should start kidding in a few months.
    I have a bred (I AI'ed her) Berkshire gilt and a breeding pair of Kune Kunes...with 3 piglets from our first ever farrowing!
    Along with an untold number of chickens & rabbits (NZ-Cal crosses), I think I now have a "homestead".
    I also garden & can & cook everything from scratch...with what we raise, I no longer shop at grocery stores and it feels amazing!
    Thanks for sharing!

    I live in Utah. I would love to start a homestead one day. What kind of things did you have great success with in the Utah climate? Any suggestions on what things I can do to start small?

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I didn't realize it at the time, but Utah is PERFECT for sheep. Cheap hay is easy to find, and the dry weather protects from worms and parasites.
      Of course, chickens are easy just about anywhere.
      But if you have the space for a few sheep, they are basically "set it and forget it" animals in Utah's dry climate. Especially a hair sheep, like the Dorper.

      @@homesteadingwithPJ awesome! I have been watching a lot of your videos and I told the wife yesterday “I want sheep.” I know it will probably be years down the line, but good to visualize for the future. I really want to have a homestead though as it resonates with me so much. It’s difficult to see all these videos with lush green land or forests and then look outside and see desert. I keep thinking to myself if I could move I could do it, but I also understand how much my wife’s family means to her and so we will probably never move out of state. I have not found many CZcamsrs that homestead in Utah specifically. Thanks for your content as it’s been very enjoyable and it’s nice to see on a similar scale to what I would want to do. Wish you and the family well

      Thanks for the kind words. I promise, adding ruminants will "green up" your dessert. It may take time, but that's their super power.@@isaacbridge3623

    Were the reasons moving the homestead from Utah related to the state not being a good place to homestead? I have been contemplating a homestead in either Utah or Colorado but have my concerns regarding the weather and dryness.

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Mostly expenses. It became pretty expensive, which meant we could sell our land and get more land elsewhere. Also water is an issue there. But we still have family in Utah, and honestly, if you can get land, it might be the best state in the US for sheep production.

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I think so. Worst case scenario, you have to buy some hay. But I started my trio in Utah with two ewes and a ram on less than 2 acres.

    Hello!
    Do you sale meat ?

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 5 měsíci

      Sometimes, although technically I sell life animals, and then my customers pick up their meat from the butcher.
      I may have some lamb for sale in the spring.
