At a vet I worked at, the in-house groomer had a miniature Poodle client that was 21 years old. The dog came in once a month and barely moved the whole time. The groomer would always lay him in the sunshine after his groom. His owner was as ancient, tiny in her wheelchair, and the only time the dog moved was when he was placed in her lap. He would lift his head and wag his tail as she leaned over him and whispered to him. No one ever suggested he be put down. We were all rooting for him ❤

Very true. We had to put our beloved Shih Tzu down in November. He got some mysterious illness that no vet could determine with confidence, he yo-yoed between being healthy and near death over the course of a month. We think now it was a heart disease. On his final day, he was done with being at the vet. He barked and howled all day, whereas he's usually complacent. The vet urged that perhaps his time was up, as he was oxygen dependant and wasn't showing signs of improvement, but we weren't sure because of the yo-yoing and we were hoping he just needed more time to recover. We decided to let him decide and see for ourselves if he was done. It took less than a minute for us all to see that he wanted to go. It was the hardest thing we've ever done, yet one of the easiest decisions to make for his sake once we chose to listen to what he was telling us. I still miss him to pieces!
We really do our best for them

So true I remember the last year worried the first time I had to take her to the vet due to not being able to walk but she pulled through and a friend told me when it’s time she will let me know and she did. The last time she again couldn’t move at all. She looked tired and had lost that sparkle in her eye and gave me a helpless look. We had to carry her out in a blanket between us in the car to take her to the vet. I told my kids to come kiss her and hug her as we knew this was it. Crazy thing right before the injection as we were holding her she got that old sparkle back briefly and was almost puppy like in her affections and kisses. Like she knew we were honoring her wish to let her go. She was my first kid lol and I still 3 years later miss her terribly. Maxine was the gold standard for us for sure.

I had to put down my beloved Miles 2 years ago, he did some of the same things you all were talking about, lost mobility, lost continence, couldn't lay down without rolling onto his front shoulder super awkwardly, battled mid to late stage kidney disease, had a weird growth near his tail, and just generally lost that sparkle in his eye. He howled and yelled terribly the night before we took him to the vet that last time, I think because he was so upset about not being able to walk and in a lot of pain, but we were able to get him to quieten down for a little while was to rest on top of me with his head on my heart and eventually sleep a little.
He was a 16 year old tawny Eurasier. He was so loving, and I still miss him, but he let us know when it was time to go. He also got to see his old owners, my in-laws, before we took him to his kind vet for what turned out to be his last day with us. Miss you Miles. Miss you a lot buddie ❤.

The average life span of Berners is a little deceptive. Berners have a massive problem with cancer, probably because many of them are born with one or more of the 14 known onco-control genes turned off. If they make it to age 7, they are highly likely to make it to 12 to 14 years old because those are the ones that did not die young of cancer.
It's like the lifespan estimates for humans in prehistoric times. Yes, the "average" life span was only 30 to 35 years (depending on which study you look at), which makes it sounds like no one ever knew anyone who made it to 60 or 70 years old. But if you look at the average lifespan of people who survived to age 20, then the average lifespan is 70 years old--plenty of people knew 70+ year old people because it was pretty normal to live to be 70. Taking out the effects of infant and childhood mortality shifts the average lifespan dramatically.

A vet once told my family about our oldest dog that their quality of life was based on their 8 favorite things. And as long as they could still do the majority of their favorite things then you didn’t need to worry about a horrible decision like having to put them down. This dog is clearly very well loved, and while some things might be hard for her now, she probably still has plenty of her favorite things available to her. Ultimately I wish them as happy and long as life that she has left with them.

@20thcenturyrelic I think it's hard for some people to understand taking care of a dog till the end of their life, there's a reason why a lot of older dogs are just dropped at shelters or dropped in the middle of nowhere. I am sure your dog was very grateful for the comfort. You were able to provide her. She was surrounded by family who loves her in surroundings that were as familiar as they were going to be if she had dementia. We have about 2 elderly dogs who are proaching probably their last couple of years, but we're going to stay by them and give them the best life we can. Taking care of elderly dogs looks drastically different from the care of puppies and adult dogs. And sometimes it's not pretty, but we do it because we love our animals..

At the same time, YOU no longer get to comment. So many more people are being kind here; to turn off the jerks, is to turn off the kindness. And she doesn't take all dogs. Its heartbreaking to see a family member fully aware of everything happening but unable to move or control anything but their head.

From what she saw at the vet office it was totally valid, but when I had him at home he was running around the room happy as anything despite the fact that his head was tilted almost to a ninety degree angle - it was extremely dramatic. In the end he lived another two years after that, I'm firmly convinced that he was quite brain damaged because he was by far the stupidest rabbit I have ever met but he was incredibly loving and sweet and I don't think he had any idea there was something wrong with him. Vets are experts but even they don't see the full picture, let alone people watching an edited CZcams video of an animal being groomed.

Had a similar situation with one of my kitties. At 18, the vet said her kidney function was starting to go into worrisome territory. An x-ray showed she had a bullet lodged either in or near one of her kidneys. We adopted her when she was 2, so the only conclusion we could think of was that someone shot her at some point before we adopted her. Well, her vet said we should put her down, just for worrying kidney levels and a slug! She ate, drank, pooped, hunted, played, begged for treats, and policed the other cats in the house. From our perspective at home, she was totally fine! At 21, she developed severe arthritis in her hips and lower back. And at 23, we were no longer able to keep her pain under control and she couldn't lift her back half. The final decline happened in less than 2 weeks, and we made the decision to release her and had her put to sleep. That's 5 beautiful years she spent making our lives better. Vets don't see what we see at home.

I had an old Maltese that was near the end of her life. She was frail and matted as we were unable to get her groomed because of her frailty. The vet recommended a particular groomer who specialized in such dogs. I was so grateful. She was only with us a few more months but she at least was comfortable with all the mats gone. I am brought to tears when I see how wonderful you are with dogs in this condition. It was so many years ago that was had the dog i mentioned and I wish I remembered the name of that groomer. I had an 11 year old mastiff that loved the water and a bath his whole life until the last two years. He just couldn’t stand well anymore, he couldn’t get in out of the car, and it was just too difficult. The last time I took him they called within 30 minutes to come get him. I did what I could with wipes and whatever the last year of his life. I was more concerned about his well being than his dirt. He definitely went out happy & smelly!!! He lived a nice long life for a big 200 lb mastiff. People need to understand when you have these big dogs this is really common so if you can’t handle it I would not recommend getting a dog you can’t lift.

It's sad but part of being a pet parent. My 17 year fur baby's last year of life was spent doing what we could to have her feeling good and happy. We cut down on grooming frequency and would only do it at home because she had dog Alzheimer's and she no longer tolerated it well (she used to love "spa day") and going anywhere else stressed her out far too much. We stopped grooming on the table with a loop and switched to brushing and clipping nails on a blanket on the floor, just as you did for this sweet baby. Vet visits, we only did what was required by law and stopped doing other things that weren't really needed for a pup at the end of their life. When she could no longer recognize me as her mom, would just stand frozen in place looking confused and she was clearly not having good quality of life anymore, we made the call and helped her to cross the rainbow bridge. I am blessed to have the memory of holding her as she went to sleep for the last time. I was there for all the days of her life and while it was so hard to say goodbye to her, I would do it all again.

Only the dogs really know what's going on with the after bath humping sessions but this human has a theory: boy dogs are ever hopeful, even the neutered boys. Most of them have no sexual experience at all, so they have no idea what the sequence is and they have no idea what to expect. They live their lives hoping that the girl dog they live with will suddenly be in the mood three minutes from now (that's not how it works at all but they don't know that). Any change in the girl's scent may be *the signal* that she's ready for romance! A boy never knows, all he can do is give it a try and since he has not the faintest idea of what he's doing, it doesn't go the way he's hoping it will but a fellow has to try.

    • @caitchri2426
      @caitchri2426 Před 4 měsíci +10

Yes it is usually because of the new unknown smell. Remember that humping is not just sexual for dogs, it is also a sign of dominance. That’s why lady dogs do it too. When smelling an unfamiliar dog- they can show dominance or aggression- to “show the other dog who is in charge.”
It could also be a sexual thing, but not as common, especially in older, fixed dogs. But you could have a dog who is sexually triggered by certain smells or being in the presence of a new unknown dog. Some dogs have stronger sex drives.

I highly respect the decisions you make along the way for the safety and well being of the dogs, along with how thoroughly you explain why you've made those decisions. I love how you explain things from a groomer's perspective to educate pet parents on why previous groomers said or did something that the pet parent didn't like. For example, why certain coat conditions must be shaved, Or why other groomers were not able to complete certain tasks. Good job!

Another thing people forget is when super senior animals are out of their normal home environment, just like with elderly humans, they're going to be more symptomatic (pain, cognitive issues) due to stress. While this lovely old girl is struggling at your shop, at home she is likely far less symptomatic because she's in familiar surroundings and only moves around when she needs/wants. I was a vet tech, and I helped treat many elderly animals. Owners often asked if I could help them at home with things like bathing or sub q fluids, and I went to many peoples homes to help them with their super seniors (with the blessing of the clinic, I had a certain affinity for working with the old farts lol).
I had a American Staffordshire/GSD mix who came from horrific abuse. I took her in when she was 10 years old, the vets gave her 18 months to 2 years. She held on for 9.5 YEARS. She was arthritic as hell, her one elbow (which was damaged by her previous owners, suspected to have been broken through a kick or other such injury) was just destroyed from arthritis. Was she in pain? Yes. Did she struggle to get around? Yes. But she was happy, she enjoyed grooming all the foster kittens and cats, she ate well, and was alert and cognitively fine.
My current old fart is a 24 year old ex feral. Tough old bastard didn't accept retirement until he was 21. Bennett doesn't do anything on anyone's terms but his own. He's got some matting, but his kitty timer is pretty short lol If I had a second pair of hands it would be easier, but he's not in pain (from the mats) and he's happy. He is obviously arthritic, but he's still doing things that make him happy. Including the time honored tradition of not allowing the human to pee by themselves 😂
I hope this beautiful old girl you helped today enjoys what time she has left. And to be such an advanced age for a BMD? The owners are obviously doing something right.
