- In this video I will show you how to get a knock out of a 4x4 square box. There shouldn't be any struggling with this and after seeing a 25 year master electrician struggle numerous times I have to say this need to be made.

How do you remove a knockout from an existing box in drywall that has a mud ring? That’s the real video
Yeah exactly!
Did you find a way? Exactly what I need to know lol
Using a flat tip screwdriver and a long nose pliers.
Screw a self tapper in the knockout seal and use angled head dikes to pull on the head of the screw.
Drilled a hole in knockout and used 3” screw to pull it out.
I had no idea what to do. So I watched your video, and I then succeeded at my task. Thank you, sir.
Awesome I am glad that this helped you ☺
Like all your Electrical videos. I'm teaching my Son the trade but I'm very impatient Lol. But I put on your videos and he gets it 100%. Thank you and keep it up! 👍
Awesome and I appreciate your kind words. Have a Merry Christmas
Please do a video how to put it back on. Removed too many.
ACTUAL how-to begins @1:40. And they're LINEMAN PLIERS. I own multiple Klein tools, and they're ALL different. That's all for now, gotta sit down & eat my Kroger!
Thank You - I appreciate the information greatly, including the stories that give us context. I'm a DIY guy, and want to do it correctly.
Finally someone who likes my stories 😂 😂. I appreciate your comment and watching ☺
I’ve seen more people struggle with that very thing good info
Me too especially seasoned veterans...
I use the diagonal pliers and or needle nose pliers to poke them, then grab a twist.Same difference. Nice videos.I'll be subscribing!!!
Yep I do that too when I don't have my linesmans. I appreciate your subscription. Welcome to the mountaineer outdoors family
I had no idea how easy it was until now, thank you for this amazing video and hope you had a merry christmas! (You earned a subscriber)
Awesome and welcome to my channel. I appreciate your comment and watching ☺
@@MountaineerOutdoors of course!!
Jump to about 1:40 to see the removal
Some years ago I had to get a knockout out of a 4" square box that was installed in 1947. I had to take a screwdriver and a hammer to pry it out. They made steel a lot harder in those days.
Yes everything was built much better back then. Nowadays it's pot metal or crappy metals. I appreciate your comment and watching
If the metal box is already installed in a finished wall. Drill the circle you want to pull out, then drive a screw into it (or anything that will fit) and then start pulling and shaking the screw around. Eventually, the metal disc will pop out.
Good tip
Simpleton take on a simpleton process. How about removing access holes with several sizes in it, multiple progressive options? I guess you don't know that those exist and are another trouble / problem all to their own. Thanks for the simpleton take, that was wonderful, for simpletons.
exactly what I was looking for. I hope it works. The previous guy definitely warped the box...
Yes I subscribed. I do or did CZcams also. Must give credit when it is due .
I appreciate it and welcome to the diy family
Your awesome! Thanks
Now do that on a popout with a florescent light fixture made that has been powder coated
I know those things can be tough for sure
Funny and clever. Thanks. However, I can’t use your 14-in-1 as demonstrated because the side of the junction box is covered by drywall. Any pointers on that? Maybe a video demo? 🥴😎
You can hit inside of the box with your kleins and w screwdriver I will definitely work on a video.
Can you make a video that explains things that are soooooo confusing?? Most of these metal electrical enclosures have knockout holes that measure 7/8th inch. But if a person wants to find a connector to go into that hole - for 14/2 romex - they are not going to find a connector labeled 7/8th - because the industry does not label them that way.
If you would be so kind as to explain the reason for this - you would be the only person on youtube who has explained it.
Sincere thanks!!
I guess it's the same thing as saying that you need to buy a 2X4 when really your buying a 1 1/2 X 3 1/2". Crazy how I never thought of that either. Good idea. Thanks for watching and commenting ☺
Sounds like you bought the wrong box, I've done the same thing myself thinking they were all the same. Good news is if you take it back to get the right one, you'll save a couple bucks because the ones with the bigger knockouts cost more in my experience.
This trick does work well. Thats how I've always opened them.
Yep no reason to make it any harder than it has to be
Dude made my day. Helpful and funny
Awesome so glad to hear that. Thanks for watching and commenting
Short quick, exactly as described!
☺ Thanks for the comment and watching
Nice electrical trick 👍thanks for sharing
Always my pleasure
Thank you I needed that
Glad to hear that. I appreciate you watching and commenting ☺
I came here to learn a more efficient way of removing knockouts, and I’m leaving with a new way of popping zits. Didn’t see that one coming lol
😂 😂
Do you have any tips on removing the 2-in-1 combo knockouts? I hate those. The ones that can fit both 1/2" and 3/4"? It's easy to remove the 1/2" but then the left over peace to remove to expand to 3/4" is a pain.
Soon there will be a video on this
agreed. I'm about to start installing boxes and 3/4” conduit and at a loss for how to do this easily. just bizzare they don't have dedicated 3/4” knockouts that come of as easily as the 1/2” ones. just don't see buying a dedicated tool so i can install 4 boxes.
ha, i found an easy fix ... just buy, in the first place, the 4in box with dedicated (i.e., separate) 1/2” and 3/4” knockouts! lol. i found these when i went back to home depot to find a tool for those hybrid knockouts.
@@ronaldchong I ended up just using some linesmen players and praying the little extra left over bit really hard. Hammering it with a screw driver does nothing but bending the box, found that out the hard way.
I have a video coming out very soon on a device I found that will help you all out. Watch for it
Thank you for the tip
Definitely my pleasure thanks for watching and commenting ☺
Nice video. Well done, kind of funny, easily digestible. Thank you. And they're 15-in-one pliers: 11, plus finger nails, zits, hair you mentioned. 15 is sometimes...I touch myself with them. ;)
😂 😂 😂 😂
Actually my friend and i did use them for money as little kids in the 70's 😂
How to remove it on an existing box without cutting out sheetrock? Any easy way to remove it from the inside?
Good idea I'll keep that in mind
Is there anything wrong with drilling it? If i want it to look nice
Drilling the removable knockout?
Awesome brother good job work safe and God Bless 💙
I appreciate you and you always watching. God bless you too
Yeah bro, that only works assuming you can even get your linemans over to the side of the box with the knockout in it. Never the less, the swing room
How about doing one from the inside. When you have an existing box and want to remove a knockout to gain access.
Sounds like a great idea for a video.
I work in fire alarm systems and do a lot of add-ons, I just get a small flat screwdriver in the gap from inside and pry it inwards, works really well.
I’m actually searching for ways to remove the knockout plugs from breaker board covers. They’re much more stout.
Working on a video for this.
What about the other boxes?
Video coming soon 🤞
Advice for if I'm doing a remodel and only have access to the knockouts from inside the box? And the box is attached to the stud opposite of the knockouts, so it keeps moving if I try to hit it with a flat edge.
Actually, I just had an idea -- maybe I can use a hacksaw blade to open small gap to get a flat edge in there . . .
Yes that definitely will work. I will be doing a video on it in the upcoming months
How do you remove the knockout when the box is already installed in the wall?
Working on video stay tuned
Nice 👍
In canada we use out fingers
Pretty tough. Thanks for watching and commenting ☺
What about the main panel and sub panel knock outs... those are a bitch.🥴
Totally agree with you on that for sure
What's your recommendation if it's already finished, and u gotta come in from the inside? I don't want to knock the nails out, it's side mounted to a stud with nails from the one side to the other
Take a screwdriver and pry it loose. It will pop off
@@MountaineerOutdoors I know it was a silly question, what I found to be the best idea, was to get a nail puller, they're solid, 90°angled, and a solid hit works good because a good surface area of the tool to knock it out and better weight transfer through the tool
Naw man not a silly question at all. Sometimes someone has a fool proof plan to remove them.. What you said is a damn good idea. Thanks for sharing it
How about knocking out the tabs from the inside of the box when walls are all drywalled and finished.
Working on that video
okay anyone can do that one. Anyone can knock out the coin "knock out" My problem is to knock out the ring shaped knockout that is connected to the "coin" Thaat is my achilles heel.
That would be an EXCELLENT video. I got ya. It will be done
What is the little disc called that you knock out?
A round-2-it!!!!😂
😂 😂 😂
we in canada user our thumbs
Hitch hiking 😂 😂
So, I CAN'T run MC in to plastic box...can I run a Romex in to metal box?
You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, "electrocuted" means you were killed by electricity...WHY people confuse them, I don't know....well I do.
It's because MANY heard it from somebody else who can't distinguish one from the other.
You can run mc into a plastic box if it has a knockout plug you can remove. And you can absolutely run romex into a metal box.
👍👍
Fell asleep
⏰ Time to wake up 😂
Many of us ain't electricians?
I understand that and take no offense. However, the guy that I was with was a 30 year veteran. That's why made that video because if anyone should have known it should have been him.
Wjy waste 2:30 of my time when a 0:30 video would suffice? But thanks for the tip.
Aww your so welcome ♥
Sorry, stopped watching after about the fifth time he said it was easy. Wasted 1:28 seconds trying to get to the point. Bye
♥ Sorry to see ya go 😔
I can't believe you had to make a video for this.. lmao
Yep I felt like over the years I have seen people struggling too much..
You talk too much. Very short video made into a long one.
♥
