The research says negro league’s statistics are only 75% complete. My point is that it’s impossible to know for sure what these players accomplished. Many writers who tried to write books about these players even admitted that they had to rely a lot on the stories people told because of the lack of statistical data.

The problem is the Negro League stats are not 100% accurate, and they played a shorter season so they wouldn’t qualify for alot of these records.
For example, to qualify for any batting average record in MLB, you must have 502 plate appearances. The new single season Batting Average leader is Tetelo Vargus. In 1943 Negro Leagues, he batted .471 but only had 136 Plate Appearances. How can you compare his 136 plate appearances to the MLB single season leader Hugh Duffy who had 616 plate appearances?

They excluded barnstorming, exhibitions against white teams, winter ball in Latin America and so forth. First off, congratulations to the researchers who did the painstaking work of trying to recreate the stats from old newspaper articles. The box scores back then were incomplete, so they had to impute some of the stats based on educated guesses. I am very happy they have put together statistics to the extent they were recoverable. The faxt they did not keep stats and records is one reason they were not considered an organized major league. I do not think their stats should be recorded with the single season records if they don't meet the minimum requirements for at bats or games, etc. You can't compare a 60-game season to 154-162 game season. Same for lifetime stats. Hitting .350 over 10,000 at bats is much more difficult than doing it over 2,000. For the same reason, pre-1900 stats never counted towards the all-time records. It is a silly and short sighted decision.

They were good enough to play.. However it is NOT the same match ups so the stats can't be compared.. It is a giant ?? in terms of what Gibson and some of those players would have done in MLB. Nobody has any idea.. Maybe they would have been as good as the best of the era like Williams.. Or maybe they would have paled in comparison. We don't know..

I actually don't think anyone that played in that era is the "Greatest" anything.. Today's game with the level of athlete, the advanced stats, training etc is just so much harder. Everyone throws hard and with spin rate these days.. Again it is just 2 different leagues and the match ups are NOT the same. I fully understand they should have been allowed to play in MLB. But we should NOT just lump all the stats in because we had a racist view of things back then.. And I have no issue with any pioneering black player being in the HOF either..

so then will the white players who played in these exhibition games against the Negro league also have their stats count toward their MLB totals? Or only the black players?

This is dumb, you can't mix stats with players that didn't play against each other, regardless of the reason.
You dont get to have your PPG from Europe, added to the NBA... we need to stop this madness.

This. They were two separate leagues.....of course we all know the reason for it....but the MLB Hall Of Fame has already been putting in Negro League players for years now. No need to combine the numbers as it just creates more of a mess....more so than it already is trying to compare numbers from different eras.....Dead Ball Era, Steroid Era, time before the pitcher's mound was lowered, etc. Plus, verifying numbers from The Negro Leagues has been super difficult over the past decades....how are they determining which numbers are valid or not?

Your comparison is flawed. Both of these leagues were in the United States. Your talking about Europe and the US. You are aware that they did play exhibition games against each other. Negro Leagues vs MLB. They were called barnstormering games.

My granddad always told me stories about Josh Gibson and the urban legend that he allegedly hit 700-800 home runs but they would never count them due to racial barrier in the majors. I vaguely believed it only because I saw Bonds hit so many and thought nobody could ever hit as many as he did

Once they counted, Gibson only hit about 175. He died at age 35, so it was highly unlikely he hit more than 300, even accounting for some missing games.

9:05 You could say the same about Japanese position players before Ichiro changed that. Prior there was a heavy bias (racist?) against signing them.
Japan has won 3 of the 5 the World Baseball Classics so their talent is on par with MLB talent, right?
Using MLB’s logic, Ichiro has 102 more “professional” hits than Pete Rose so he should be recognized as the all-time MLB hits leader now.
