    EDIT: If you're having a hard time keeping your voice 'in the right spot', try looking at this link: shevoice.blogspot.co.uk/2009/0... and specifically this part where it says: "In order to train yourself to start breathing using the muscles around the chin and throat area, you will have to put tension on these muscles . You do this by tightening your neck muscles as if you are sucking on a sour lemon, and then try to breathe/speak." It seems like this is the best way to get your adam's apple (after raising it) to move backward into the sweet spot easily and consistently.
    Also try pulling your soft palate up and back and sucking on it with the back of your tongue in order to pull your adam's apple up and backward. This might help especially if you are having trouble breathing. If you get your hard palate high enough, there should be enough room in your throat for air to squeak by. (Which I think is where the shallow breathing comes from). Having good posture will also help keep everything in the right spot.
    Introduction/crash course to making your voice sound feminine.
    This is what I explain to everyone who asks me "How do I sound like a girl?" In my experience, the vast majority of youtube and reddit tutorials for voice training focus on raising the pitch of your voice and then trying to compensate for the lack of chest/throat resonance with nose resonance and breathiness. The problem is that your voice ends up sounding unnaturally strained, restricted to a small portion of your range of pitches, and unable to project or yell well.
    I don't know how well known this link is but the people who I've met with convincingly female voices use this technique: lena.kiev.ua/voice/ (Voice feminization for MtF transsexuals. Why resonance/timbre is more important than pitch and how to change it.)
    In male puberty, both the vocal folds AND the vocal tract elongate, giving you a deeper range of pitches and a larger resonating chamber for your voice. Most people tend to focus on the pitch of their voice but I think that the pitch of your voice is actually irrelevant to how the human ear genders your voice. There is so much overlap between male and female vocal ranges that people don't mind females with deeper voices or males with higher pitched voices.
    The human ear is really good at compensating for the changes in resonance that are related to changes in pitch. I think what works much better is changing the resonance of your vocal tract by manipulating its size (length) in order to make a more feminine sounding voice. This essentially undoes much of what male puberty changes in your voice, giving you a close-to-feminine sounding voice with a slightly lower vocal range.
    The link I gave you explains the ONE MOST IMPORTANT change you can do to your vocal tract to change the resonance/timber of your voice. It doesn't have anything to do with your vocal folds. In fact, I recommend trying to keep the pitch of your voice monotone and unchanging while you attempt to raise and pull in your adam's apple.
    12:44 Example of technique.

    I want a higher voice because my features are relatively “cute” or “feminine”, but my voice I kinda low. It always throws people off and I hate how people react, that’s all ;w;
    Edit: It's been two years. turns out it wasn't my voice. i went through puberty and stopped caring about the whole needing to sound feminine thing. I wasn't happy with my appearance and probably thought that changing how my voice sounded would make me closer to the idealistic cutesy female that i desperately wanted to be. just try to be happy with yourself, you can change so much about yourself yet there will always be something you’ll find to hate about yourself if you don’t change your perception of yourself. you’re all lovely, i hope you feel comfortable being yourselves soon

      Hmmm.... It seems some ad-bots have gotten smarter.
      Just above me, unless someone has reported it yet, is an ad (yes it is an ad, i'll explain why), that i have seen in several other "how to make your voice more feminine" videos lately:
      It normally addresses the top poster, likes the post or the video, and then goes on to suggesting a thing that can be found by searching on Google (it do not even provide any link).
      Then it continues claiming it is a "one of a kind" guide for getting a feminine voice in 30 days "without the normal expenses".
      It just sound SCAM all over it ... i think i'll report it myself, by the way, i have already reported 2 or 3 other ones.
      The point is, the ad has several bot accounts, addresses different people (usually the top poster in a thread), it do not use any link but suggests googling the same place, it uses different expletives in each, and refers to different people that are claimed to have gotten amazing/fantastic/tremendous(as said, it uses different expletives)results with it, but a lot of the text, apart from the expletives and name of the referred friend or relative, are the same.
      .... I think i'll let it stay, but only as an example of how one of those ads looks like.
      EDIT:
      My god, i should have checked the entirety of this thread first!
      It seems the 2 i had reported were seen as not-ads .... and they are in THIS VERY SAME THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'm a cis guy who has always enjoyed doing voices for entertainment purposes. I'd long been able to produce a female voice by mimicking various sorts of sounds I thought were ideal (mainly by using some combination of the other techniques you outline early in the video) but as you said, it does create a situation where you lose a lot of your natural vocal range. I suppose because I started mimicking voices from TV (cartoons mostly) the voice sounds passable but perhaps not natural. By using your technique, I was able to produce a more natural sounding voice, but it's much tougher for me because I've had years of doing this kind of voice the "wrong" way and have to un-train myself from using those techniques.
    Anyway, just wanna thank you for this video and the in-depth, technical / science-based descriptions. I'm not trans, and I only do this for fun, but I very much empathize with all of the hard work transwomen (and men) go through to perfect this kind of thing! You should make more videos! I found the link you posted above quite a while ago, but the description there is missing all the details. It gave me an idea of how it works but I didn't know if I am doing it right. So, thank you for this video and the detailed comments you gave here!
    After some practice, I found a spot for my adams apple that somehow matches your description of the sweet spot. The only thing is, it doesn't want to stay there. I have a hard time keeping it there. If I do not concentrate, it does down almost immediately. But it seems to get better with training :)

    @Shaked K
    Doing a head voice or a falsetto is completely unrelated to doing this technique. The position of your adam's apple is not controlled by the vocal folds (or otherwise determined by the pitch of your voice). lena.kiev.ua/voice/ This link describes the muscles that are involved in this technique and I always recommend reading through this page (the first place where I ever saw this shortcut explained in depth) even if it's very dense and technical.
    The easiest method to feel your adam's apple move is to swallow. If you put your hand across your throat, you should feel your adam's apple move up and down about a finger width or two. From there, most people try to 'freeze' all the muscles in their throat (which usually means they can't breathe but it's okay cause the next step is to suck it back into your neck from which you should be able to breathe again, which means you won't have to hold your breath for long).
    Going into a head voice or raising the pitch of your voice won't affect the adam's apple's position (not directly anyways). Pitch control is nice but it's something you do later, like adding icing to a cake. What matters is feeling and envisioning the muscles that are involved.

    I loved this description; in hindsight what is being said here is that very subtle attention (auto-neural-plasticity i.e. building neural pathways; primary nature) needs to be given to LIP SPREADING, FORWARD TONGUE CARRIAGE or MOVEMENT, BREATHING SPEED (i.e. breathiness), RESONANCE, REVERBERATION, INFLECTION and RETRACTION SPEED. The approximate spatial area in the throat box in contrast to the epiglottis that create high-low vibratory frequencies at certain intermittent intervals that occur within milliseconds is what is being done here, this is what manipulates and controls the very complex anatomical description given in the video and link here. VERBAL SKILLS and IMAGINATION are an important asset to this also...

    • @AdaHan
      @AdaHan  Před 7 lety +33

      This is what I wrote in another comment on this video:
      The next thing is to be sure that you're going up with your adam's apple (You can kind of freeze all your muscles in place after a swallow) and then into your throat. You can try to focus your voice through the hard palette at the top of your mouth and out past the tip of your nose, which makes you want to pull on the back/sides of the skull where the muscles we want to activate are. It might help to also try focusing your throat through your trachea at the bottom of your throat instead of that works better for you. Also try sucking it in with your tongue with the back of your mouth which might work for you. If you can get your adam's apple up and then back there, it should want to stay up and soundwise it should get you about 5/6 of the way there to making your voice sound completely feminine, even if we are have kind of a robotic monotone from keeping the pitch the same. And then perfecting the sound is just normal vocal exercises.
      Remember that your adam's apple should both LOOK and FEEL more hidden inside your throat but it shouldn't be moving down, rather, it should move in/backward. Definitely feel with your hand or even try looking in a mirror. And don't worry if you don't get it right away. This is an unintuitive use of your muscles and it will need some trial and error.

    Like others, I can get the adam's apple up, but it comes down again. I can't work out how to bring it back. Several times you advocate doing what you do when you eat lemons, but I've no idea what my muscles do in those circumstances. If I go and eat a lemon, will I understand, or is there any other description you can give of that part of process?
    When my adam's apple goes up I can't breathe at all (because I'm swallowing) and if I open my mouth adam's apple goes back down again.

    • @AdaHan
      @AdaHan  Před 7 lety +16

      First of all, you want to read this link: lena.kiev.ua/voice/
      That site explains exactly which muscles are engaged during this technique. Being able to envision the muscles in your mind's eye is very helpful. It helps a lot of people to imagine the mouth puckering and tightening that happens when tasting something very sour because it engages those muscles even if it doesn't necessarily place the adam's apple in the correct position. Try this: put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and suck on your soft palate while at the same time trying to raise your soft palate back and away from your tongue. Basically, raise the back of the roof of your mouth and pull your tongue up with it using negative pressure. Hopefully that might get your adam's apple pulled up and back and when you finish swallowing, you should be able to open your mouth and breathe while you concentrate on keeping your adam's apple from falling back down. Your breathing will be shallow and raspy probably because we're basically trying to shift the entire airway backward a bit. A lot of people have commented that it's hard for them to breathe and in hindsight, raising the soft palate (something that automatically happens when tasting a sour lemon at least for me) is probably what they were missing. I'll put an annotation in my video in case trying this helps some other people.

    • @BenSwithen
      @BenSwithen Před 7 lety +1

      Ah, that explanation does help quite a lot. I've got the apple on the shelf. Still can't quite seem to breathe with it in that position, but I figure practicing getting it there and keeping so will be handy. (I find it terribly hard to believe my head is full of bones and muscles - the prospects faintly monstrous, so it's hard to really envisage the things described in the article, but I'm working on it). Many thanks for your patient explanations.

    • @cynharris6230
      @cynharris6230 Před 6 lety +3

      Ada Han I don't know if you still respond to comments, but I'm having trouble knowing whether I'm doing it right or not. So far, no matter how much I raise my Adam's apple and "push it back", I haven't noticed a tangible difference in my voice (not that there wasn't one, I just can't tell). At the same time, holding one finger at the top of my sternum and another at the conjunction of my chin and neck hasn't helped me because my brain simply doesn't know how to handle or compare the two vibrations. At any given time they might be the same or different, and I would be none the wiser because they're just vibrations to me. If I had to guess, I think my problem is keeping the Adam's apple back when I talk, but my biggest problem is that I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong or if I'm doing anything wrong at all! It feels like I'm trying to solve a math problems but all the numbers in the problem are hidden in a throats shaped box where I can't see them so I have to randomly answer numbers to hope I get it right and the sound it makes for "correct" is ostensibly the same as "incorrect". Very frustrating.

    Thank you for your video. It's a bit long, but very onformative. And you proove it works very well. You have a nice female voice. I've started pushing my adam's apple up and back several months ago, and due to false information (danger!! don't do this!!) I've stopped and did it again, and then stopped... But, noticing a nice change in my voice (and collegues telling me my voice has changed) I started again. So I'm very happy to see that what I was doing (just by noticing that cis women have a less visible adam's apple and that I can consciously put it up and back as when I swallow) is a good way to feminize my voice. I now know that it is safe as long as I don't overtrain (as with any other muscle training, even in piano or guitar training!). So, thank you very much !

    I started practicing with this technique last night... I wasn't able to find that 'sweet spot' that keeps it up there, unfortunately... Any time I think I might be getting close(? I dunno... It feels like it's near the top of my throat and near the back of my mouth... or something like that..), my gag reflex kicks in.
    Maybe I'm doing something incorrectly? :s
    I'm going to keep at it... I tried keeping my adam's apple held up there with two fingers for a moment and I could already hear a massive improvement. Of course, that's not really feasible if I'm talking to anyone in person, and it would probably damage something if I do that much.
    And I'm really hoping it becomes way less strenuous and much more comfortable to do...
    Thank you again,
    Alyssa

    • @AdaHan
      @AdaHan  Před 7 lety +6

      Once you can keep your adam's apple from falling down mid-swallow, try to imagine sucking on a really sour lemon. That tenseness in the sides of your neck is what you want to be using to pull your adam's apple back. Your adam's apple should move in approximately an upside down L shape, not just diagonally. Then you should find it possible to breathe but in a really shallow and shrill manner. If you talk at this point, you should hear the change in the resonance of your voice (although it will be rough because it's different muscles than you normally use to speak). The next step is to get used to talking in this tensed-up state and then learning to relax the muscles in your neck and throat as much as you can back to normal without letting your adam's apple move out of the sweet spot.

    • @AdaHan
      @AdaHan  Před 7 lety +4

      What ends up happening is your breathing becomes shallow and shrill. And you end up talking very 'creaky'. What you want to do is to talk lower in your throat/chest around your sternum area. Yes, it will be hard because you won't be used to using those muscles at first. But it will become easier and more comfortable with practice. When you find you have the resonance you want, the next step after this video is learning to relax your muscles again while keeping your adam's apple in that spot, which will make your voice sound more natural too. It helps if you start using your diaphram to support your breathing, which will making getting rid of the tension in your throat much faster and easier.
      I don't recommend holding your adam's apple with your fingers unless it's just to 'test it out' once. It's probably not great for the muscles/ligaments in your neck. (And btw, some people naturally want to talk in their nose while preforming this technique which is okay at first while you are getting used to the muscle tension but you definitely want to bring your voice back into your neck/chest where people ordinarily talk and produce sounds.)

    • @jessicabruhl6712
      @jessicabruhl6712 Před 5 lety +3

      The moving back part is confusing. I figured it out by singing really high not going into falsetto to where it like screeches in a way. Practice swallowing and doing that at the same time. Also take your tongue to the top of your mouth and back which are linked to those muscles that shes talking about best place to practice is in the car.
      You could also practice swallowing and just hold it on the swallow. You won't be able to breathe but will figure out how to breath at the same time. If your doing it right you'll feel the vibrations like what shes talking about but also when you breathe in quickly if your holding it back properly you'll notice air resistance making a bit of a grimy noise.
      This technique does work and will help you reach higher pitches with ease. But it's frustrating to get it locked in all the time gets easier as time goes on Ive pretty much got it mastered now. It just sux waking up and my voice being lower but it's about to a place now to where I just can lock it in easily with little to no warm up...

      Also you won't figure this out in one day itll take weeks just practice it along with all the other voice training that a voice therapist can help you with and one day it should just click...

      If your religious pray the Christian way it worked for me I know that sounds like bs but a switch flipped in my brain afterwords and Its like I just understood it. Also try thinking in a female way in your brain change your rythm change your resonance all of that is important...

    Thanks a lot for taking the time to share this, it's really helpful to have such a detailed description.
    I did have some questions though: when you practiced this how tiring was it initially? Specifically the muscles under my chin and the ones under the hinges/corners of my jaw get tired pretty quickly, I can only use them for short periods. I ask because swallowing to hold up the adams apple takes very little effort (aside from not being able to breath) so I am wondering if I'm training the wrong muscles or not. Should I be looking to relax into a position or is this more like strength training?

      Holding up the adam's apple is something that we do naturally all the time. It's the muscles we use to swallow and we do it naturally when singing higher pitches. It shouldn't be that tiring. The pulling back of the adam's apple IS tiring since it isn't something you would normally do for long periods of time. It took me probably months to get to the point where I could do it for more than 15-30 minutes without getting strained/tired. So yes, there is muscle training involved but you ALSO want to be relaxing your neck muscles as much as you can after you find the intended resonance change of this technique. This is a shortcut to change your vocal tract shape but I've realized it lately that it also forces you to use slightly different muscles when you breathe and talk (a consequence of changing the vocal tract I think). And that will be very tiring at first. Definitely take it easy on your voice and gradually practice more and more every day. Don't push your voice farther/faster than it wants to go.
      If you can hear the resonance change, and you can feel the difference in your breathing (like a raspyness in your throat/trachea) then you're probably doing it right. From there you practice to work out those muscles and to let the other muscles relax more. A bit of column A and a bit of column B.

    So if I get my Adams apple to move up and back will it stay there on it's own once I do it? as in I won't need more effort to keep it there?
