  • Learn how to make a halter top from scratch without a pattern in my latest step by step sewing tutorial! It’s super easy to sew, and because it’s made with stretch fabric it’s easy to get a great fit as well. You could even use this same idea to make a halter top from a t-shirt by using an old t shirt as the fabric to upcycle and show off some of your cool old tees!
    This is a great sewing project for beginners that will be quick and easy to sew, so I hope you enjoy learning how to make this shirt! It's totally customizable, too - I made a full length tank top but you could make a crop top with this same tutorial.

    MATERIALS NEEDED:
    Fabric: About a yard of a stretch knit fabric (I only need ¾ of a yard, so this is a great project to use fabric remnants on!) - it does need to be stretchy fabric so you get the great fit without having to add darts and so you can get it on and off easily without needed a zipper.
    A fitted tank top to use for a template

    Walking foot (optional, it can help sew stretch fabric if you have a hard time): this is the Singer walking foot I use on my Singer machines currently: amzn.to/2NkhoxP *

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
    In this halter top sewing tutorial I’ll teach you how to sew a halter top using stretch fabric without needing an actual halter top sewing pattern. You’ll learn all the steps of cutting and stitching including how to use a shirt you already own as a guide to cut out the bodice pieces; how to sew the shirt together; how to hem the edges neatly; how to create a casing which your strap will go through; and how to make a strap to tie the top around your neck. I also give you my tips and tricks for how to sew stretchy fabric so you can sew your knit projects successfully!

    Thank you so much for watching this tutorial! I love wearing halter tops during summer as they’re so comfortable and help keep me cool. I love wearing them with pants or shorts, or tucked into a skater skirt like I did in my spring look book video to give the appearance of a halter top skater dress. This will be a simple project to sew and perfect if you’re a beginner seamstress and you want to learn how to make your own clothes easy!
    Thanks for taking the time to watch my tutorial!

    Monika

    I luv this DIY halter and the thorough easy to understand instructions. Can you make a swing tank top with the top neckline the same in the front and the back? I saw it on FP made with a woven rayon fabric. I can’t figure out how to cut out. I think you could definitely do it 🤗

    Could you do a same blouse in non stretch fabric?

      Thank you and thanks so much for watching!! This particular top wouldn’t work with non stretch fabric but I do have a playlist with some other projects (including some other fun summer tops) that do work with non stretch fabric if you’re looking for some projects you can use non stretch for!

    Thank you so much, I have a singer machine, my needles always break when I sew don't know why

    • @DevotionswithAchiro
      @DevotionswithAchiro Před 5 lety +1

      Hei. I had the same problem with my singer. Try to check the needle you are using for your fabrics. Because different fabrics need specific kinds of needle. SO if you use a wrong needle for instance for carvas it will break. Goodluck

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 5 lety +1

      Oh what a pain!! That’s so frustrating! As Mary said it’s definitely important to use the right type of needle for the fabric you’re using... the ball point needles work great for stretch fabric, and there are a lot of different types and sizes of needles for different types of fabrics as well. Usually on the package it’ll say what type and weight of fabric the needle is meant for (like lightweight, heavy, denim, stretch fabric, etc.). Another important thing is to change them fairly often! If your needle has been used for a lot of projects, it can be dull and break easier, so I like to change them every couple of garments to make sure they’re nice and sharp 😃 They can also get bent over time (I used to make a lot of makeup bags where I would sew over zippers, and also would sew cosplays with really thick fabrics, and these would cause the needles to get bent a bit after sewing)... sewing with a bent needle will cause them to break easily too. If they still keep breaking, I wonder if you could talk to a sewing machine repair shop to see if there could be something off with your machine, like maybe something in the mechanics could be off that could cause it to break. I hope you’re able to figure it out, there’s nothing more frustrating when you want to sew than when the equipment doesn’t work right!!!

    Does it have to be streatch fabric or could you theoretically do this on a non-streatchy fabric?

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 4 lety

      It does have to be stretch fabric 😃 A non stretch fabric won’t be able to be pulled on and off or be fitted like this top unless it’s made very differently. Thanks for watching!!
