  • This is just a simple chore I had to do today, I though I would share with you.
If you choose to follow this how to, I highly recommend testing your connectors to make sure it’s wired to the industry standard. Not all trailers are necessarily wired the same.

hi, i just cut my connector off mowing the lawn and cannot find it anywhere to know how it gets wired. It was a 4 pin connector, but there are 7 wires.

If you’re not familiar with fixing broken wires, the easiest way is a test light. Turn on the lights for running lights, then brake and turn signal and figure what wire goes where. They’re about $10 at harbor freight and it’s a very easy process.

@@Chadlistentome i can fix broken wires. I dont really want to buy a test light yet. Its my jon boat trailer. Why is there 7 wires when the plug was a 4 pin?

@@EdStaniszewski trailer brakes and lights. I would assume somewhere during its life it was set up for trailer brakes if it has them. If it doesn’t that was simply the wiring the manufacturer had on hand.

@@Chadlistentome oh ok, it never had trailer brakes. It was a jon boat and trailer package. Its just a small single axle trailer carrying a 700lb jon boat. i know the white is the ground plug, there are 2 white with tan stripe, 2 tan, a green with tan stripe and a yellow with tan stripe.

@@EdStaniszewski If you have a 6 or 7 pin connector on your truck and want to use the brakes, simply wire in a 6 or 7 pin connector. There is applicable code for the wiring color, but the best way to find out what wire goes where (due to previous owners doing whatever) look at what color wire goes to what light or what brake.
If it has been wired to code it should be the following. pin 1 ground, 2 brakes, 3 running lights, 4 12V, 5 left turn signal and left brake light, 6 right turn signal and brake light, 7 reverse. Reverse will disengage you trailer brakes while backing up. I hope that helps.
