    My two cents:
    .
Cliff's bass is audible right from the start (0:02), but not to the point that it's overbearing. Cliff can be heard on the downbeat, held alongside those heavy power chords. The left-panned guitars after the intro (0:19) sound less-tinny and more raw. Lars' toms don't pan in from the right (0:26); they come in slightly from the left, instead, and stay in the middle-less compressed, and somewhat muted.
    .
From here, things really kick off, and your mix comes alive. Everything sounds warm and full, not stiff and congested. Cliff is no longer lost in the background, and rumbles among the rhythm section; there's more depth and clarity to the snare and the rhythm guitars themselves. The down-picked sixteenth notes (0:40) are a good example of a less guitar-centric mix, the guitars being joined by the other band members instead of overpowering them. A less abrupt and immediate attack is offset by a larger, more detailed aggression; there's more to appreciate. Another example are the roaring power guitars, which Cliff joins clearly (0:54); in turn, they respond with a series of razor-sharp chords. It all sounds amazing.
    .
James vocals also less immediate, if only because that "studio sound" is replaced by a more "live" feel. He has to sing within, not over. This includes the beautiful meld of rhythm guitar and bass (1:07) provided by your mix. It feels more colorful and metallic than ever before, with an extra level of sharpness that makes the original sound dull by comparison. I tend to focus on the more obvious things, but its the little, omnipresent details like these that made me fall in love with your mixing style to begin with. I love the space of the vocals ("Wait!" 1:11). The panning of the drum fill (1:16) is another small, but exciting detail that's easy to miss. So is the kick drum fill heard shortly after it (1:21; in the original mix, this salvo of crisp kicks amounted to a dull, unappealing "whump!"). Lars' drums originally suffered from a lack of detail, which you've helped rescue from the void. Thank you.
    .
This being said, the tom fill at 1:26 is completely drowned out. However, the intense power chords are a treat, and really help enliven the chorus (I think your opting for them might have been a deliberate choice, as they kind of ape the tom rolls, and perhaps sound better than what the stem tracks could provide, drum-wise). Everyone's really firing on all cylinders, here. You've boosted the drum fill at 1:43, and made the individual beats easier to parse. Cliff's refrain comes in clearly (1:50); the power chords' response hits like a truck (1:54). I love being able to hear the kick drum at 2:10 (the kick drum is extremely difficult to hear in the original mix), but also that I can make out Lars' signature triplet pattern. Awesome! The rhythm guitar admittedly sounds great; it's also a bit like Pac-Man: gobbling up another tom roll at 2:23. Then again, the drums burst forth in further clarity at 2:40. It's a bit of give and take, but I'm incredibly happy with the result.
    .
In the past, your mixes haven't always been kind to the lead guitar. Here, Kirk has a lot to compete with, but he manages to do so without obscuring some of the finer details (listen for more kick triplets from Lars). Kirk soars over the bass refrain, and seems to stretch out during the bridge (3:21)-hitting the listener from both sides. Meanwhile, Lars drums like an absolute champ. Before the slide, Kirk's final note worms into my ear. Then, we're moving confidently onto what is arguably Metallica's best breakdown. The original song had panning on the toms, but those feel pretty weak compared to yours. The added presence of actual bass helps; generating space was always one of your biggest talents, the guitars thundering magnificently into the void. They have somewhere to go, instead of feeling trapped in a tight, uncomfortable space.
    .
I remember the inclusion of the live segment from your previous mix! Here, the transition is seamless and potent-a chance to stretch one's legs and bask in the mayhem before things pick up again. The gradual bass crescendo leading up to a resounding "Die!" from James (4:22) is fabulous. So is the final chord (4:41) into the coda; details like these-or the guitar fill at 4:48-leap out at you like brutal ambushes. Cliff never fades into obscurity (4:59). Indeed, his backup vocals call out of the storm (5:21), sounding like they actually came from somewhere; they also envelop the listener a bit more noticeably. The guitar hooks at the end swoop in similar fashion (slight clipping at 5:38, though), as do the harmonies towards the end (5:48). Instead of coming across as two distinct tracks crudely smashed together, you let the leads bloom into a grander tempest. It's sublime. The finger-tapping is less foggy (6:19), but doesn't muscle Cliff out of the equation (that bass is purr-fect). I also love the boosted double-bass(!) during the closing bars (6:48), as well as the equally burly finish from Lars with his toms before a last, echoing note.
    .
I absolutely loved this one! I'm sorry for the delay on weighing in, but I didn't get notified when it went live. Needlessly to say, you've outdone yourself, here. This is my new favorite of yours from Ride the Lightning, and it might be my all-time favorite (apart from Blackened, but that one's hard to top, I admit). I'd happy you're able to continue working on these during the pandemic, and appreciate having such good metal remixes to jam out to during these troubling times! Keep 'em coming! \m/

I saw these guys for the first time September 8th, 1989 in Salt Lake City. . My 16th birthday. I was crushed against the barricade directly in front of James. 12,000 people chanted DIE like I've never heard in my entire life. Every fist in the air. I made solid direct eye contact with James when he sang "Die! By my hand." Still the best show I have ever, or will ever, see. Caught them twice in 96 and it wasn't the same. 89 was peak Metallica. They couldn't be touched by fucking ANYONE.

I actually had to go over the rail later on in the show because the crush was so bad. I landed on my ass right in front of the stage and when I stood up I was about 10 feet from James. I flipped the fuck out and threw him the horns just before security grabbed me and drug me off to the side and back into the crowd. Still one of the greatest experiences of my life. I could barely move for a couple of days after and I couldn't turn my head for a week. My ears rang for a week at least. That is the one show I've been to where I literally feared for my safety. No bullshit. Not even Pantera came close.
