My two cents: Jason's bass sounds so good, here! The more you bring him out and mix him properly with the rest of the band, the more I wonder why they chose to exclude him. There's just no forgetting that dark purr once you hear it properly. I first heard it in 2018 on your second "Blackened" mix, and hearing again here is nothing short of sublime. I especially love the slower parts (the syncopated notes at 1:05 and cat-like slink during the verses), but also when things speed up (4:45). During the solo, Kirk's notes flow like honey (5:38)-as clear as a bell over the furious rhythm section. I appreciate, as usual, how you demonstrate structure as something to cultivate through proper mixing: When the band sounds off in true AJfA fashion, the album's signature "pipe-organ" approach lets every single player be heard, all thanks to you: Lars at the bottom, then Jason, then James, with the harmonized leads resting comfortably on top. Great stuff as usual! (note: There's a small detail I never noticed before: 3:29, a small extra "tap" that sounds a little funny to me, panned to the right. Anyone else notice this?) This being said, there's just so much crunchy detail to appreciate (6:16), and at such speed, that Lars' drums almost sound a little overwhelmed during in the second half of the song. When things really speed up, he becomes blanketed, and starts to punch through the extra fabric like a sewing machine. Not just the speed of one, either, but the shallow degree to what actually pierces. I'm referring to the snare, not the kick drum (the latter sounds totally fine, 4:12-5:10). The original snare was entirely a sewing needle: hard, narrow and sharp at all junctures. And while the added detail your mix provides lends itself well during the song's first half, that clarity starts to wane during the second; Lars's needle-like snare returns by virtue of the tip being the only part that can penetrate. To be absolutely clear, I don't think any of this is your fault. It boils down to Lars as a musician and producer. First, he clearly prioritizes his snare (a taste of things to come in his later years) and his playing sounds very repetitive and machine-like. Second, the snare itself sounds very metallic and tight (especially during those band-stopping snare rolls, 5:34-5:38). The other players also lay it down pretty thick-maybe to emulate the sounds of jungle combat peppered with machine gun salvos? The problem is, they hold down the trigger and never stop, and during the maelstrom Lars' worst qualities come out. Despite the genre name, I don't want to feel like I'm actually being shot at when listening to metal. A snare shouldn't actually sound like bullets. Sorry to focus on some of the negatives, here! This is lovely work as usual, and I really enjoy it when you revisit older tracks. Great to see two songs from you in quick succession, too! \m/
Everyone's talking about the bass, which has improved immensely; but I think the drums sound better than they ever did on the album. What used to sound like a click track now has some thunder to it. They actually sound like drums!
I must be in a minority, because I like the way the drums sounded in the first place! I don't know why they were changed. I am not so keen on that "compact sound."
@@rch6 Agreed, I've always loved the relentlessly dry engineering on AJFA - it gives it such a satisfying and truly metallic bite, and sounds huge as a result. Probably one of my favourite sounds in metal, now that I think about it. But then again, I'm not a drummer and have always loved more deadened drum tones that are 'objectively poor,' like the one on King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King. Ahdy's mixing is great as always don't get me wrong, I just don't think that AJFA sounds even slightly bad in the first place like a lot of people do
Tell you what, this V2 remix and remaster stays very true to the original but enhancing everything it lacked. Jason’s there and audible, sounds killer.
Jason was one of the best pickstyle bassists I've ever heard. The fact that his pickstroke is so heavy BUT also so clean. Just the right amount of attack and you bring it out so well!
There's only so much Ahdy can do with the songs that lack stems. For this album, only this song, Blackened, And Justice For All, The Shortest Straw and Dyers Eve have available stems, all being pulled from Guitar Hero/Rock Band. Other remixers simply equalize the original and apply a bass cover for the other songs like Harvester of Sorrow, but there's not much choice.
@@Sparkyh AI extraction isn't good enough as a whole (yet) to use for a proper mix. Plus, good luck extracting the barely audible bass. Even the Rough Mixes don't give any better of a result, bass-wise.
@@LeandroOlavarria Ans Justice for Jason is terrible. All the uploader did was throw in the bass track from Guitar Hero and made it too loud without any mixing.
You solved every problem - lack of bass guitar (obviously), the drums being too clicks and not punchy at all, and the guitar being blistering and thin. Bravo! 👏🏼
This is pure gold! The drum sounds like thunder, with lot of space for it to “breathe”. The bass is improved...can definitely (and finally) be heard but it’s not overwhelming. Additional bonus: dropping the movie’s parts made the video more intense in my opinion. Thanks a million for the effort and for giving us all this gem.

It's got so much of the punch and life that it does when they play it live that I keep waiting for the flourishes that Kirk usually throws onto the solo and they're not there because it's the record!

What I truly love about this is that it not only adds the much needed bass, but you mixed it properly that other fan remasters of the album/songs seem to miss; the bass is obviously heard but it's not overpowering or muddy, instead it compliments by adding warmth and depth to the song, whereas other mixes seem to just turn the bass up then finish at that, you also mixed the rest of the band to help compensate for the turned up bass. I stumbled upon your channel less than a week ago and loving every remix, Metallica or not. Keep up the great work!
You lifted up the harmonies and solo parts, as well as improved the bass significantly! All in all it's an excellent facelift, though personally nothing matches the crunch the guitars had in your first remaster of this masterpiece. Keep on mixing!

This mix is by far the best one I've heard with the bass reinstated. Perfectly loudness and growl with our being too loud. I would listen the shit out of this album if you remixed it. Hell I would pay a god amount of money for remixes like this.
Man coming back to this song always reminds me of how good it is, it's basically metal perfection, the slow build, the heavy breakdown, the speed/thrash, the solos, the dual guitar harmonies, not overplayed drums, but still important and impactful, strong lyrics that build as the song does.
