    www.ericthecarguy.com/
    Welcome back kids as some of you might know this video is a companion to the video I did on "Diagnosing An Overheat". This is how the cooling fan got fixed. I realize that some of you out there might be electronic wizards and know how to solder way better than this but my methods work and are way better than using those plastic connectors that just clip 2 wires together. My little tool works good in tight spots too, all you need is some house wiring and some alligator clips to make that happen.

    It's crazy how negativity a simple helpful video like this brings out. Everyone's a soldering expert. I worked in a development center with hundreds of engineers, and I can tell you the amount of thought that went into soldering for development vehicles (read: not production) was quite little. Soldering is a very forgivable task and it's easy to achieve an outcome that works. Don't over think it when it isn't worth the time based on your individual scenario.
    Also, love the lighter action haha, heat guns are convenient luxury. :)

      On the Internet everyone is an everything-expert. Amazing, right?
      I've found lighters more convenient than heat guns since you can focus the heat in a smaller spot, they heat up instantly, they're small so you can use them in tight spaces like under the dash. But maybe best of all, they're wireless!

      +Engineering Explained My friend has seizures/epilepsy and it was sad to see him try to solder. Sadly he's a con-man bullshitter so you know what he does now? He gives tattoos. Sadly, he's conned many people into giving tattoos. One guy had a tattoo by him, a small skull on his arm, and when the guy took a shower, it came off

    @rbalbury Yea, I'm actually going to make another one of these videos in the future that shows how to do this a bit better. I do need to replace the tip on my gun as I'm sure that would help a great deal, as well as tinning the tip. I'll have to look into your suggestion on the PVC cement that sounds very interesting, thanks for that tip and for your comment.

    @kwakman99 I plan to do another video on this topic at some point as I'm tried of responding to comments like this. If you read through the comments below you will see that I've responded to this several times, some people got where I was coming from however, sometimes you can teach people things by NOT doing it correctly and with this video that was my thinking. If you want to get me something for Xmas however perhaps a new tip for my gun so that it will get hot enough to be effective.

    I am also a mechanic, and that was the way I soldered. I was offered by my employer to attend a electrical course, it was very helpful in honing certain skills. I never claim to know everything, but I do my research whenever I have a new challenge. Always clean, and tin the tip of the soldering tool, and flow the solder to the wire by heating it. There are many great How To videos on CZcams, and yours are among them.
    Thanks, KMG

      Thomas Andersen With a soldering iron that can solder lol not that 20w piece of crap

    • @ChrisLesmerises
      @ChrisLesmerises Před 9 lety

      Thomas Andersen Use a paste flux, it would have solved his heat transfer issue. It would have solved his globbed solder issue... and because he wouldn't have kept the iron on the wire nearly as long, his shrink wrap would have been just fine.

    • @nexus1g
      @nexus1g Před 9 lety

      Chris Lesmerises That's what the rosin core is for -- it's flux. I don't think he tinned the iron, and that helps a lot with its thermal conductivity into the wire.
      Personally, I would have cut away all of the old shrink tubing and redone it all. It would have provided a lot more room to work with the new shrink tubing.

    • @ChrisLesmerises
      @ChrisLesmerises Před 9 lety +1

      I understand rosin core solder is fluxed, however in my experience, it's not enough. I promise you, more in this particular case, would have helped considerably. It's not the only thing that would have helped, I'll admit, but IMO it's the quick fix for the majority of his problem.

    • @nexus1g
      @nexus1g Před 9 lety

      Chris Lesmerises I see. I'd personally never had an issue as long as I didn't muck it up and burn the flux off before the target is wetted.

    I just found your channel last year, and this is the first old one I've seen. Your videos have gotten MUCH better!
    One trick with the shrink tubing I've used is to trim loose the shrunken end so that the more open end will slide over it. You lose length, of course, but sometimes it will save you from having to unsolder the wires and start over.

    @lineartechbd1600 I think you missed the part were I said the good motor was out of a Honda and the bad one was out of a Toyota, they use different pins BTW so a connector swap was not possible. My solder gun would probably work better if I got new tips for it. Heat is conducted just like electricity, using a heat sink to solder with actually helps the area remain hotter by isolating the heat transfer.

  • @JeebusCrys
    @JeebusCrys Před 8 lety +1

    Just a *tip. Tin the tip of your soldering iron prior to heating the wire. It will provide better and quick heat transfer. Then, apply the solder closer to the tip. Once the solder begins to flow, you can move the solder along your wire with ease. This will help you to avoid over-heating the wire.

    @N0sPr4Yu No, you could solder in wires to get the length you need, as for where it broke off if it's near the connector you can use the information in this video to take the ends out of the plastic and restore them to the new wire then reinstall them back in the plastic part of the connector.

    @absolut5050 I also haven't soldered anything since this video but I'll work on that, thanks for the input. :)

    @raudonas21 I think what you did was twist the wires together, there are suppose to be 2 different wires one for each earphone going into the jack, by twisting them together you are sending the signal out both wires unless you only have the jack in part way in which case you will only be sending the signal to ONE of the speakers.

    @XralphiX Once you put the tape on to seal the connection putting shrink tube over the top of that is kind of a waste. The ideal is to use the correct sized shrink tube.

    @AlwaysWishing1983 I thought it was easier to water the sod if you installed it that way.
