  • In the center of Washington state is an underrated piece of scenic railroad built by the Northern Pacific. The Yakima River Canyon is now ran by the BNSF railway and in the year 2020 is host to Eastbound only traffic consisting of mostly empty grain trains along with some empty coal and empty oil trains.
This video was taken over a couple days during a long weekend in October. It covers many locations in the main Yakima River Canyon which is about 20 miles long and runs between Ellensburg and Yakima Washington. One section of this video takes places farther West on the line near Bristol which is another short canyon setting along the river. This video showcases four empty grain trains and one empty coal train. Most of these trains are seen at two or more locations through the canyon.
These scenes were filmed with the professional DJI Inspire 2 drone.

My aunt and uncle had a ranch at the very east end of the canyon. I always enjoyed watching the trains as we drove through the canyon. That tunnel on the right at 13:09 was my marker that we were almost there. While there, anytime I heard the rumble of the diesels, I would jump up on the coral fences and watch the train move by in the distance like a small micro train. Thanks for the great video.

I haven't been through this area since I was a kid in the 1950s. I always loved our family drives that took us through the canyon, but my dad hated getting stuck behind slow moving vehicles with very few opportunities to pass. He preferred the route through Vantage which, as far as scenery (and trains!!!) went, was nowhere. Great getting reacquainted with these videos!

Once again nice filming. My aunt and uncle live off of thrall road on the east side of the 82 and we can see the trains as they enter the canyon from Ellensburg. Most of the trains come from Auburn yard as empties even an oil train now and then. Rarely do you see a train from Yamaha unless it's the local. It seems the loaded trains come down the Columbia gorge and then make the circle back. Could be they don't want to jam the gorge with empties.

I've always wanted to see it in detail. Now my life is complete. Very nice 180-degree looping effect as well earlier on. That was majestic.
