  • The brand new 2022 Cannondale Synapse has just been launched. This is the 5th iteration of the bike and as usual has taken a big technological step forwards which will no doubt guide future bike releases from the brand. The Cannondale Synapse has been the choice for endurance road cyclists for over 15 years, however, are Cannondale trying to steer this new Synapse in a different direction? With space for 35mm tyres, an integrated Garmin Varia and Lezyne light system dubbed SmartSense, who are Cannondale really trying to target this bike towards?

    I got the 3L in Sept. '22 as a commuter interested in endurance cycling. I've ridden 1,500 miles through a New England winter since then. The proof is in the pudding.

    Am I missing something? An endurance bike - and the light time works for ‘up to 4hours’?
    Is 4 hours endurance? 🤔

    Need to know how the lights connect. The front light mounts with a standard gopro mount, if that cable doing to the battery is usb then great, you can change that huge front light to something sensible.

    This is a meme bike for cyclists - Dura-Ace (top-model), external cables, and 9 kg of weight )
    But great for those who have never been on bikes:
    - It comes with lights!
    - Oh, cool I'll take one.
    Just need to add flat pedals)
    Lol

    Thanks for the review. 3.5-4 hrs of battery time is very disappointing. Routine longer rides hit 5-6 hrs, my Varia alone lasts longer than that.
    Would only consider this bike if all that junk on the front is removable.

    • @richardggeorge
      @richardggeorge Před 2 lety +3

      Useless - considering how low the power outputs are and how big the battery appears to be.....i do more than one 4 hour ride every week

    @lewisbarlow3537 Před 2 lety

    So when I wash the bike do I leave the battery on or off? Is it OK to ride Without the battery in place or will that area underneath the battery get damaged from dust dirt and rain when there’s no battery in it?

  • @mmilestones

  • @lewisbarlow3537
    @lewisbarlow3537 Před 2 lety +2

    Has anyone figured out if you can remove the front and rear lights and ride without them?
    If so are they easy to remove?

    • @cyclingweekly
      @cyclingweekly  Před 2 lety +1

      They're mounted by GoPro style fixings. If you wanted to remove the whole system you definitely could, it would just take a bit of time since a lot of the cabling is internal.

  • @MyJohnedward
    @MyJohnedward Před rokem

    Can you add front/rear fenders?

  • @mmilestones
    @mmilestones Před 2 lety +1

    I tried so hard to make it work including a plan to remove the lights and cables but then I realized I would looking down at the odd, open space where the battery would have been. So I cancelled my order of the bike unfortunately to go to another brand. Not angry, just the way it goes with the changes that occur in the industry from time to time.

  • @SonicFlare
    @SonicFlare Před 2 lety +2

    The fact that they didn’t integrate the cables and clean up the rear and front lights is a giant miss - it’s hard to believe that someone gave a green light to that for production in 2022. Crazy.

  • @jonpoon3896
    @jonpoon3896 Před 2 lety +1

    The frame of the Synapse would’ve been a bike I’d want. But as someone who considers a 3 hour ride short, that SmartSense is neither bright enough nor long enough a battery

    Thanks for the detailed review. Lots of good questions covered.
    Tech integration to raise driver awareness of cyclist present is a good idea. Yes drivers should be switched to cyclists regardless but reality has proven this isn't always the case and this helps reduce the risk exposure.
    Do you know if a spare battery can be carried? Given tech progressing in battery development I would guess future iterations would have longer life but if a spare can be carried that's 8 hours covered!
    Thanks again guys for the video

    • @cyclingweekly
      @cyclingweekly  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, if you want to buy an additional battery to take with you on long days, then there is nothing stopping you switching them out mid-ride. The spare batteries may not be immediately available but should follow soon after. Best to contact your local Cannondale dealer for dates.

  • @stevek8829
    @stevek8829 Před 2 lety +2

    That battery looks large to only provide four hours. I get pairs of lights for $11 to $16 that recharge via USB and last six hours. I guess you can pack a spare battery, but four hours is too short.

    If I am not mistaken Garmin already make a complete system that incorporates all these features and it does have to be mounted or integrated into the frame of a specific bike. In fact....i am completely sure that they do because I own the system Edge1030, Vira Break lite and a Vira light and I get far more than 4 hours out of them. Plus my display tells me what traffic is coming up from behind. Shush..... don't tell any body but y can put it all on ANY bike.

    battery looks super ugly (although i've heard some people saying by not integrating it into frame the frame construction can be stronger?), as is par for the course now prices are eye watering and it hurts me that a 5 grand bike comes with heavy wheels. Lights and radar integration are interesting but probably unnecessary for most riders so its a shame there is no option without them (i mean who really uses radar? just be a switched on rider and pay attention to your surroundings). no bb30, mudguard mounts and fussy headtube integration is a positive though. anyways if you want one you'll probably have to wait until 2024 anyway so meh......

Woooooowowww! Probably rides like a bicycle too I'll bet. I just can't believe this thing is for real. Wow! I would imagine it cost a pretty penny though. Probably way more than most people would spend right? Maybe if I maxed out all my credit cards together I could afford one. Wow! Talk about "Dream Bike". Boy, those pot smokers at Cannondale are really putting things together for us cyclists. Imagine, a bike with brake lights welcome to 2022. Bike tech that will make you shit your pants. 😁

    I can see both of the lights being rendered useless by handlebar and saddle bags. And only 4hrs of light time? You'd be better off just getting a dynamo hub set up and you'd have more options for brighter lights. No radar but hey, maybe take out your headphones. You're on a bike not a submarine.

    The tech is interesting - but who actually asked for it? And, it's not optional, you're paying for something you might not need if you already have lights. As a previous owner of two Synapses, I'm a fan, but this one isn't doing it for me; don't like the dropped seatstays, but that is now the Cannondale way, but good to see a threaded BB. Oh, just don't mention the prices.........yikes.
