  • Let’s talk about the pancreas, specifically the pain in the ass that is pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
Why focus on such an awkward little organ? I want to dive into the possible link between those conditions and anti-obesity medications, particularly the GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) such as Ozempic, Bydureon, Saxenda, Trulicity, and Wegovy.
In this video, I provide you with some insight into GLP-1 RAs and pancreatic issues.

This video means the world to me! I've had pancreatitus over 10 times in my life. The worst pain in my life,
But, that being said, my doctor thinks I'm the perfect candidate for ozempic and or mounjaro ... I'm so confused whether or not to move forward with treatment! It's scary because I remember the pain vividly when I had pancreatitus.. I have diabetes and I need to lose over 40 lbs. That's why my doctor thinks either medication will be perfect for me, but I fear pancreatitus!

ozempic gave me acute pancreatitis after the 9th week . ER told me kidney stones . i said no and I was correct. i sweari had all the side effects from ozempic. been off it for 3 weeks and I finally have some relief. i found out that , yes every time I ate any of the DONT foods . I had flare ups and was in extreme pain for a day or two. the er also said my sodium levels were way low 133 , lipsae 119 , e-GFR, creatinine 64 . all these numbers were normal 5 months b4 ozempic .

Thanks for this video Dr. Dan! I was just in Stanford hospital for one week, for acute pancreatitis (and near liver failure). I don’t have pancreatitis, I probably drink a few times a year, and there is no history of Pancreatitis in my family. The surgeons have no clue what caused it.
    MY FACTS:
-2008- gave birth to my baby boy
    -2010 Gallbladder removal
-2010 Gastric bypass (*severe co-morbidities required it)
-2010 had two pancreatitis episodes linked to ‘sludge’ from my gallbladder removal (Lipase was high= pancreatitis)
-2011 Esophageal Spasms began (GI and other doctors confirmed, and Lipase/bloodwork was normal)
    -2020-2021 I stopped having spasms
    -2022 began taking Wegovy
-April 2022 Spasms came back, and I had a ‘different’ and more extreme ‘spasm’ in May (went to ER but didn’t ask for a Lipase test)
-May-December - random spasms happening with greater frequency (some felt different). They usually occurred 3-4 days after taking my Wegovy
-Dec 2022 - took last Wegovy shot on Dec 26th
-HOSPITALIZED one month later for acute pancreatitis (Lipase levels over 3000, and concerns over possible liver failure)
    -Mid-Feb 2023 - new insurance authorization for Wegovy…
    THEORIES:
-Atypical Pancreatitis all of these years (unlikely)
    -Idiopathic pancreatitis (not likely)
-Rare Choledochal cyst they found (too small to be deadly or cause pancreatitis - presumably) - is it chicken or the egg?
-Wegovy is to blame - only a .02% chance of this according to my research and Rx paperwork (aka very very rare). One doctor admitted that the Stanford teams don’t think Wegovy is the cause of my acute Pancreatitis.
-Many people who have gallbladder removal end up having Pancreatitis (wasn’t given a source in this - is this true Dr Dan?)
-Could rapid weight loss be causing pancreatitis?
The Stanford teams encouraged me to see my GI, a pancreas specialist, and my general practitioner. So, no real help given, there are too many moving parts, just like you said Dr Dan!
-I’m using the scientific method (if I’m applying it correctly?): I’ve stayed off the Wegovy for 2 months, and my bloodwork just returned as normal. I’ve restarted the Wegovy (w/doctor supervisions..), and will discontinue it if I have another pancreatitis episode.
-Last week, I began having tsunami-level food and sugar cravings. Restarting the meds since then, has helped me greatly, but my goal is to wean off the Wegovy, and maybe try reprogram to a new weight set point (if that’s possible?? Epigenetics?)? I need a plan B, that’s for sure. I’m really scared and won’t risk my life on this stuff, I have my babies to raise (even if they are 9 and 14 already!).
***Pre-existing issues that ‘fog’ any clear explanations (not just for pancreatitis):
-Severe sleep apnea (even after weight loss)
    -Severe fatigue (aging? Meds? Anemia?)
-Asthma (e.g. from colds, reflux, allergies, wildfires etc.)
-Hair loss, grayed pallor, grayed complexion etc.
-Rapid degeneration of my eyesight since 2019 & 2020
    -Kidney stones since childhood
-Severe anemia (iron infusions every 18 months)
    -Pre-menopausal (hair loss? Severe anemia?)
-Mood stabilizing meds, antidepressants, any other of my 3 medications?
    -Aging???
What do you think Dr Dan?

My daughter was on ozempic for 6 weeks, it made her feel terrible so she stopped. She is a healthy 40 year old with no disease and no diabetes just wanted to loose some weight. She did loose 20 lbs and stoped taking it. She had an gallbladder attack (she thought) that took her to the ER. An ultra sound showed a healthy gallbladder and liver, but she has continued to suffer attacks at home. She was doing a natural gallbladder liver detox using garlic, ginger, lemon and olive oil. After stopping the detox she has had some relief from the pain . Any suggestions on what she should do next?

I'll tell you for certain if the GlF whatever causes Pancreatitis. How, I've had 8 Acute attacks in the last 10 years because of Alcohol and elevated Triglycerides ( Once over 10,000 ) Diagnosed with Hyper-triglyceridemia.
( And, I'm not even a big drinker ) However; since I quit drinking altogether and started on Cholesterol Meds, fish oil and Gemfibrizol I have not had an "Acute" episode in 2 years which was normally twice a year. I'm starting Ozempic tomorrow and if I get pancreatitis I can say for certain it was caused by the Medicine because I'm alcohol free and my Tri levels are lower. Keep you posted!

      Pancreatitis causes elevated triglycerides.
If you drink daily, that would cause pancreatitis. Gallbladder problems can also cause pancreatitis.
I’ve had two pancreatitis attacks. I don’t have a gallbladder and I don’t drink alcohol at all - so there are things that cause it that doctors don’t know why. I wonder if being overweight is a trigger. Both times I had it, I had eaten extra butter flavored microwave popcorn the night before. I don’t touch popcorn anymore - but I also don’t know it was the cause.
My triglycerides are normally very low, but during pancreatitis, they were in the 900 range. My doctor said they use the triglyceride level to determine if pancreatitis is improving or not.

I had gallstone pancreatitis and had my gallbladder removed. I have since developed Pre-diabetes and was prescribed Wegovy( Ozempic) to aid in weight loss and the pre diabetes diagnoses.
I was asked if I had a history of pancreatitis and I explained the above, however, I was still prescribed Ozempic. Not sure if to take it although I don’t consider what I had to be chronic pancreatitis, rather I had acute pancreatitis that was caused by stones in my gallbladder. Thoughts on this?

Who said come back in 6 months I'll check your pancreas again I'm sure something was there. I'm not going back to get rechecked because pancreatic cancer is deadly and I'll just live till I die and that's how I feel about it. Trying to figure out if this is what is happening to me currently, I hate going to the er! Last night I started getting weird sulfur burbs and a small amount other indigestion issues which are fairly normal for me because I have diet controlled ibs and Barrett’s esophagus, but sulfur burps are new. I had moderate pain throughout the night enough to disrupt sleep. This morning I started having…I’ll call it rapid digestion with pain and just feeling unwell. It’s my second week on the 1 dosage of ozempic. I get chronic kidney stones and have other painful conditions so sometimes I can tolerate more and for longer than others so I just don’t know. I’d hate to be off ozempic I’ve lost 25 lbs but I don’t think it’s helping my blood sugar much. Ugh maybe I’ll come back and update.
My main questions would be: is pancreatitis caused by ozempic going to present exactly the same as for others or does it have a spectrum as well? I don’t have a gallbladder so I know about walking doubled over for days on end (from those attacks) and so far I’m not at that level but I haven’t eaten in 20 hours either. Should I be taking these symptoms more seriously or could this just be normal for the second week of ozempic at this dose? Hard to tell!

      @mombythec Hi there,
Yes, you need to take your pain in consideration. My GP put me on Semaglutide a year ago not because of i was gravely obese, but to control my cravings of eating often which triggers insulin. As i am type 2, I have lost 55lbs over the year, but i have developed gallstones. I spoke to my dr. about it and he said yes may be this med. is the cause since, it make you not to eat alot and bile is not getting used alot. Anyways, he offered for the surgery to which i strongly refused and over the months i changed my diet and it got better. Now a thing i have started experiencing while this was all happening which got me really confused. One weekend, me and my husband were merrily having good time having coffee at tim hortons and i was normal not feeling a thing. Luckily we came home in time, i started to feel unwell. Some heaviness started to build under the ribs in centre. I was sweating, i couldn't understand what is happening, and my husband got me hot water bottle sat besides me to support me thinking that probably its gallbladder and even i thought that too. OMG , this episode of pain was the one i have never experienced in my whole life, Nature of this pain first 30 min. it stayed centralized and started to run on left side under the ribs and the left shoulder and my whole back waa getting numb and i couldn't breathe because of tourniquet effect of this pain under the ribs. OMG i was feeling i was going to die with this much pain. My husband guided to turn over to stay on my stomach with a pillow support under my chest, and slowly in 10 min the level of pain started diminishing. OMG this waa hell. After this episode, i had many episodes, another one was for whole night, pain was not as severe but stayed whole night this was longest i have ever had. By this time, i was still taking Semaglutide, one day my husband told me, that hey i think you should stop taking this med and see how your body feels and i did. I voluntarily stopped it for almost a month and these whole episodes subsided. Also, all along, i waa thinking this is gallstones pain episodes, but gallstones pain stays on the right side, doesn't travel to left shoulder. So it was pancrease. I asked my dr. to order the lab test for pancreatitis all were normal, also, i kept an eye on stool color, urine color and other flags, so far all looks fine. I think this med. just irritates my organ. Good luck to you, be very cautious and keep and eye. 👍

    • @mombythec
      @mombythec Před rokem

@@Rrrrcc4666 thanks for sharing your experience! I want to add that my gallstone experience was different, I was 21 and pregnant and kept being told that it was just the normal stretching of pregnancy, nobody would listen to me :( My gallbladder pain in the end would occur all over my abdomen and back, I couldn't differentiate an area, when they finally discovered/admitted that's what it was, I was in the ER and they had called in gyn, uro and my pcp because I was 1.5 months post partum and had suffered kidney stones and infections my entire pregnancy and before that too (I see MSK in your name, do you have that? I think I have it in one kidney but the doctors in my area are not that smart, so I'm not sure).
I am still dealing with this "rapid digestion" and pain. I don't know what it is, but they say that the side effects from this med can get better after a few weeks so I am hoping!! I lost 3 pounds in 48 hours so far. My blood sugar is getting a little better, that is the primary reason for me to be on this because I haven't been responding well to much else and I have type 2. I am always suspicious that something else is wrong because I know how to restrict carbs and even if I eat less than 5 per meal and snack, I still have very high sugars. My endocrinologist just says that I can't make my own insulin anymore....but why?!? Isn't that a condition that a cause should be determined for? I didn't get a lot better after my galbladder was removed, I continued to have very painful "rapid digestion" all of the time. My doctor simply said I just have "rapid digestion" in those exact words when we know its diarreah. So I stopped complaining about it. I tried the low fodmaps diet for vertigo and my rapid digestion got so much better! So I told the doctor that I had at the time and she said "oh, ok so you have ibs, I'll put that in your chart"....I was a little mad after suffereing needlessly for like 20 years!!

@@mombythec My guess is you have developed insulin resistance. Your pancrease receptors have developed resistance to it and not sensitive to blood chemistry. Its been 1.5 month that i am off of semaglutide voluntarily because of pain. But for last year till now i have been taking 2 tbs of ACV every morning with 1 lime, if not morning anytime during the day. So far i am doing 1 meal a day with IF and my blood glucose varies between 4.9( fasting)- 5.7( after meal) which means things are finally normal. Soon i am going to do HBA1C test and US which my dr. perscribed last week. I will come back and keep you posted. Watch videos about ACV, it helps with insulin sensitivity. 🙏
