Butterfly is way closer to her natural tone if you compare it to 1990-1993. 1994 was when she really started to brighten and lighten her voice, you can hear in the live performances. Compare hero in both years. I think that her singing very brightly (not necessarily very high) is what led to vocal decline in 1997. She was already showing signs of damage in 1996 and by 1997 rolled around when she recording butterfly it had done its toll on her voice. THIS is me saying that butterfly tone didn't damage her voice, it was daydream that did. From 1997-2001 her voice slowly got brighter again. I should say her voice was naturally maturing and darkening over time but she was choosing to sing higher. Her voice starting maturing in 1994 but also brightened that time. matured further in 1997 by dropping a bit and her natural more darker tone was apparent even though her voice wasn't as healthy. And then slowly continue to darken and mature from 2001 onward. It's why she uses so much pitch correction on Charmbracelet and The Emancipation Of Mimi her voice was no longer naturally very bright. And she is still using that nasally bright sound that is unhealthy for her to do long term.
