    Ceiling height has a major effect on speaker placement though is rarely mentioned.

    Good informative video as the usual, But where would be the best placement for side surround , in a one row seat in a 7.2.4 home theater. 1 foot in front of the seats?

      I know but he said forward or backward 30 CM, witch is best , mine are side by side of the listening area. full range side surrounds.

      @@invisibles362 - Jon appeared to be non-committal and implied either forward or rearward is perfectly fine. Dolby specifies 90 to 110 degrees rearward, and I know guys like Anthony Grimani suggest up to 115 degrees. Grimani also suggests elevating the sides quite a bit, especially if any seat is closer than about 4 - 5 feet. Would like to hear Jon's thoughts on these disagreements.

    • @invisibles362

      Really appreciate your info, only problem by going backward in my room, I would need higher speakers stand, my surrounds are 45 lb full range, book shelves speakers, and at 90 the personnes seating in the opposite side is not getting the full immersive sound from side surround. I do agree to go à little backward, but it will be à challenge with the size of my surrounds. Thanks again.

    If anyone know exactly where HT speakers should be placed, it's Jon Herron from Trinnov Audio. Trinnov has to be deeply connected to Dolby in order to be able to write the code for their AV processors. I see he and Trinnov DOES NOT recommend the Atmos speakers be placed into the ceiling corners of the room.

  • @HiFinest343
    @HiFinest343 Před 5 měsíci

    Great discussion!
    It sounded like he was recommending 18 speakers for your room. That leaves only two channels for subs. Will you have to also update your Trinnov or how will you manage that with 20ch max using the Altitude 16? Thanks!

    The more i listen to stuff like this im beginning to realise how big a mess Atmos is on almost ever level..im actually considering just going back to 5.1 or even just plain stereo at this stage

    • @HTadd1ct
      @HTadd1ct Před 5 měsíci +1

      2 channel vs 5.1 is a major difference for movies and tv series.
      I can't live without surround sound for movies anymore.

    • @pulDag
      @pulDag Před 5 měsíci +2

      In budget solution 5.1.2 is still the best compromise. There are still a lot of movies released only with 5.1 soundtrack (nolan movies, master and commander etc) so 7.1 setup is a bit lacking in that regard. And 2 height channels can be mounted on the front wall if you have high ceilings to get some ambience from Atmos soundtracks. My 2c

      In my cinema, Atmos based movies sound stunning. With no visual distractions ( black room ) and 20 used speakers and a Trinnov processor I can't go back. I'd suggest you get yourself to someone's home movie room. The decent ones are so much better than going to a cinema.

      Twenty speakers...... Might as well simply use headphones🙄 much cheaper, no cables, no amps and an even more inmersive "expirience". I swapped a 7.2 Mcintosh and B&W home theather for a Bose 5.1.2 soundbar based system costing a tenth of the price (home renovation) and it sounds almost the same (dialog is actually better) took me 10 minutes to set up and its completely wireless. In fact the wires and interconnectors of my old system weigh more than the Bose soundbar Ultra😂. BTW anyone in the market for a McIntosh MX123? Ill throw in the 2 Rotel 200 watt power amps (a 2 and a 5 channel monster class AB amps) for free all for the price of the preamp!😂

    How is it 16.x.6 when there are 12 base layer speakers? Am I missing something?

    The _"No top speaker can be inside the heads of the listener area"_ rule would make sense in a channel-based system, but it does not make so much sense in an object-based system. Acousticians such as Anthony Grimani also disagree with the old-school thinking to some extent and say the the tops should be closer to the middle of the room than any of these diagrams John is showing. Seems worthy of some added discussion?

    Everyone seems to go 11 ch so why would we need more than 16. People always talk down on 6 atmos and wide speaker yet we want to add more?! Seriously, why always 7.4!? I love my 9.6 setup.
