Florida Shelling Jupiter Island; We traveled FROM the seashell capital of the world to find shells.

  • Jupiter Island Shelling was everything I wanted it to be. We have been shelling at Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and other awesome Southwest Florida beaches but I wanted to find different shells - so we headed East. I did some research and from what I could tell, Jupiter Island Florida was going to give us the best shot at finding different goodies. On this particular day, I wasn't even expecting to go shelling. Silly me. I just wanted to take a peek at the beach and the next thing you know we're off looking for goodies. I found shells I've only read about and a whole bunch of other others that I had a really hard time identifying.
    I am not an expert! I will sometimes mis-identify the shells I encounter so if you think I got something wrong, I appreciate you taking the time to tell me! I'm still somewhat new to this and I'm eager to learn all I can about shelling and sea shells!

    Good Morning!
    I got a kick out of that way you loved the candy shells. I live on the east coast of NC and have a collection of those very shells.
    So, just left Sanibel yesterday. First disappointed at the lack of shells and the rain, however, a true shelter never gives up!!!
    Captiva🤗 I found so many Florida Conch, and other goodies, in the waters edge. The waves were rough and water kind of cloudy, but determined, I scored!!! Your advice was spot on, the shells are there, don’t give up!

      AWESOME!!! I neglect to mention that I also walk miles and miles to get the goodies we find. I'm so glad you stuck it out and found your goodies - this makes me so happy! You are quite right - a sheller never gives up! Thanks so much for taking the time to write this fabulous comment and thank you for watching!

      I'm so glad I've been able to help you do some planning! I'm a big fan of research, so I probably divulge the info I'd like to know if I were watching. I know I'm a bit biased, but I do believe the beaches here in SWFL are the best for shells. I had some great luck on the East Coast but when we asked where to find the shells they told us the West Coast! 😅

I thought any beach would give me treasures but silly me 🤣 My prized possession at the moment, (which I learned from you) is a banded tulip at a decent size. And it literally popped in my hand as I was desperately grabbing whatever I could! Anyway, the east coast is where I'm headed next time for shelling!!

    My favorite area to look for shells. I think the brown little one is a tinted cantharus. Some of the colorful shells are spiney oysters. I believe the bright orange small scallops are called Senis Scallops. The ocean is still churned up. It was really bad following the two hurricanes by Bermuda and the King Tide.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +2

      I wish those spiney oysters still had their spines, but they were nice and bright and I thought they were neat even smoothed out. It was nice to find different species of shells for sure! Storms definitely help finding shells, I just wish they never caused any destruction! Thanks so much for watching!

    @shellstories Před 3 lety +7

    Awesome finds! The east coast has a really cool diversity of shells too, despite the hard ocean waves crushing many of them.
    Those are 1000% lion's paws you've got there! I've heard of pieces and small ones being more common on the east coast, (as appose to SW Florida) especially Jupiter island, but nevertheless those are spectacular finds! You are probably right on the almost flat in appearance scallops, I think they scaly scallops. Cool sculptured top snail you got! I think with that shell you can see how much more rounded it is on the edges as oppose to west coast Florida top snails (which I still think are Tampa Bay tops). Your shell at 5:34 looks like an Atlantic hairy triton to me. Also, I think your mystery shell at 9:55 is also an Atlantic hairy triton! Those are a really cool east coast speciality too. At 10:29 the piece you called a murex I think could maybe be a frog shell (Bursa thomae) but I am not 100% sure, maybe could be a murex, maybe something else, but my best guess would be that it's a frog shell. The mystery piece might be an Atlantic hairy triton? I'm not sure, too much of the shell is missing to know for sure. Neat thorny oysters you got too! Cool finds!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +3

      It was nice to finally see different species of shells. Those little round guys are so hard to tell what they are once they've been worn down a little. They all start looking the same! Since the Pacific is so much more robust than our gulf, I can see why the shells are prone to being broken or smoothed out, making it that much harder to identify.
      I was so excited about the Lion's Paws! My first time seeing them for myself on the beach like that. At least I got a couple of whole little guys. They're so cool! The following day we hit another beach and found a few more first-time finds. Thanks so much for your comments and thank you for watching!

The only other one of those I've seen was a smashed one at Honeymoon Island. Couldn't believe someone walked on it. The bittersweets were beautiful! Great video, as usual! I love all of the shells on the ‘other’ side. Here’s my input on the mystery shells. I’m thinking tinted caranthus on the brownish one. The two in question in your hand might be a pitted murex and a smooth Atlantic tegula, which is related to a topsnail. It’s hard to tell on that one without seeing more of it, but I’m almost positive on the murex, almost. I love my handy, dandy shell book😊

    I haven't looked through all the comments, but the 'triton' @5:32 is likely a Tinted Cantharus, Pisania tincta or possibly Pisania auritula. Your triton half @ 12:54 looks possibly more like a Poulson's Triton, Cymatium cingulatum.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +1

      Admittedly, it's tough to get on the beach on the South end. There is public parking, but in order to get all the way to the south end, it's probably over a 2 mile walk. There is paid parking (sometimes) at the Wyndham, which will get you as South as you can get parking-wise. Otherwise there are other streets you can park on - but you're going to have a long walk. Probably why that part of the island is NEVER crowded! You can also try parking at the Lovers Key lot just across the bridge and then walk over to the South end. Happy to answer any more questions if you have them! Thank you for watching!

      @@carolanderson3981 I stayed at the Pink Shell one night and it was lovely. If we're talking trolley, I would try to have it drop you off at The Wyndham. It's a wee bit north of Santini Plaza. There is a trolley stop at Santini Plaza, so if you can't get off at The Wyndham, just get off at Santini Plaza and go back North again a little and cut through the Wyndham parking lot to get to the beach. On the return trip, just exit The Wyndham parking lot (same way you came) and walk down to Santini to get the trolley back up to Bowditch. If that didn't make sense or if I can give you more info, please feel free to email me at swfbeachlife@gmail.com and I'll answer any other questions you may have! I have a question, do shells somehow travel from the west coast to East ? Or do we have the same shells? I hunt for sea glass on the regular JUP beach, bc it’s in walking distance from my house. I used to find a lot of sea glass in the 90s, but basically nothing now. Someone told me to look on Jup island, but it seems like not much there either . Did you only find that one piece?
    I just subscribed, and look forward to watching your other videos.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +2

      East Coast/West Coat shells...these critters live in the same temperate waters, so they live in both areas, thereby allowing the shells to be found on both coasts. Sea Glass...almost NONE on the West Coast. I've found a bunch of glass, but it was garbage - nothing that was smooth enough to classify as sea glass. I found that one piece on the East Coast and that was it. And on the West Coast after shelling for a year I've found 1 piece. If the one I found in Jupiter had sharper edges or wasn't worn I would have just recycled it.
      Thank you for subscribing! I won't show you much sea glass, but I'll certainly take you to the beach and find critters and shells and whatnot. 😉
