All-Out fan assisted mosquito killer teardown. (With schematic.)

  • Another neat mosquito repeller/killer from India. This version has the extra feature of a fan that kicks in with its turbo setting. Very reminiscent of a plug-in air freshener that used to be sold in the UK.
    Keywords to find this online are - All out ultra fan. Note that the unit is primarily designed for 220-240V use. It may not be a good idea to use it on 120V as the current through the circuitry will be higher. A non fan assisted version is also available.

    I wish they sold these units with fans here in Greece. The big problem with these liquid and mat styles of mosquito killers is that the chemical that evaporates and condenses on the wall leaving a "brown streak" for at least 40cm above the outlet. When you try to paint over this streak it leaches through again within a month. Wish they had shellac readily available here or the Binz primer we have in the USA, its white and shellac based. Items required:
    1) A laser pointer. Any colour (as long as it's visible, not IR or UV). Any style - could be the standard pen shape or it could be a mouse-shape laser toy for a cat.
    2) A long beard with a significant amount of white in it.
    Method:

      I'm not sure if that'd pass enough current to run the fan at full speed.
      (I suppose your idea could work with a 24V fan, but they might not have succeeded in obtaining a 24V fan that small; it's a 40mm fan if I'm reading the label correctly, and only some manufacturers bother making 24V versions of those. Also, 24V fans tend to be less efficient, so for the same speed the current draw is still more than half that of the 12V equivalent.)
      If Clive reads this, then go ahead and check if that modification works properly…
      (On another note: The displayed power factor of 0.85 is strange; it should be about 0.707 for a half-wave rectified resistive load. So I'm not sure how much we can rely on the HOPI meter; maybe it somehow accidentally AC-couples the current waveform before sampling? If it uses a current-sensing transformer, that could do so; there may also be a distortion effect.)

      Doesn't makes sense for the company, because the machines are virtually sold for free, the cost is basically for the liquid repellent, there is not much difference between the cost of the liquid bottle and cost of the combo box which includes the machine and liquid bottle. There is due to price war and clever marketing tactics, as the machines can only be used with the same brand bottles, and these bottles will last for 15 days on turbo setting, whereas these machines are designed to last very long so that the customer keep purchasing the same brand bottles.

      You'd have to be barking mad to want to open one of these things and learn what's going on inside of it, really. Besides, think of the micro-pennies saved by not having to order, stock, and install such screws. You don't need machinery or bits or programming of automata to install screws you don't have anyway. The clamshell _is_ the fastener. Smush, click, "Next!".
      If we're fortunate, the next step in the evolution of case fasteners will require no tools at all to disassemble -- only the Vulcan Mind Meld.

    • @michaelthibault7930
      @michaelthibault7930 Před 5 lety

      _IIUC_ , the low setting uses only one of the two available PTCs, which have a _degree_ of self-regulation built-in: as the temperature rises, the resistance in the object creating the heat (dissipating power) rises; the current drops, and less power is dissipated (less heat is generated)… It's a feedback loop in any case. Speaking of cases: I suspect the reason the fan is there at all is not so much to push the transfluthrin (?) into the surrounding air (which it does, but as an incidental side-benefit), but to keep the plastic body of the device from melting and dripping down the wall onto the floor when it's running both PTCs ("High"). IOW, the fan is for pushing heat out of the device at least as much as it is for pushing out the vaporized insecticide.
