    The catering story: I'd contact the catering service and let them know that the people who cancelled didn't have my permission to cancel the order and ask if they could still do the catering. Then I'd make it perfectly clear that anyone who didn't want to pay for the catering was welcome not to come over, and if it means I'm alone and I pay the whole bill then so be it. The wife is equally as bad as the SIL and needs to understand that you can't just volunteer someone else's time and effort without consulting them and asking first. That's not how healthy relationships work, and it's certainly not how marriages are meant to work.

    • @nadinenone4761
      @nadinenone4761 Před 11 měsíci +3

      Yeah, I was wondering if there was still time to contact the caterers as well, although with shorter notice the price might go up. It's not right for a spouse to voluntell someone that hey, you have to do xyz even though a whole plan had been made to avoid just that. If the catering can't be reinstated, wife and SIL need to take responsibility for THEIR decision. If they're unhappy with that, oh well. It has nothing to do with OP hating women, it's all about them taking responsibility for their own actions. Maybe next time they'll think before pulling another stunt like this.

    Before the retirement party story, I don’t understand why it’s sexist for OP not want to have to make a meal for 20 people when he openly agreed to pay for a higher portion of it and then his sister. I get the sister is probably struggling financially due to the second child but at the same time, there’s no good reason to just go behind your brothers back.

      @viviennemorgan7217 Před 11 měsíci +7

      um op has everything planned for the catering services but the sister cancelled it for no reason like what in the world is going on with the women and than they didn't tell him that they cancelled the catering services behind his back and now they want him to cook while they spend time with the kids and he's all like you know what about you cook while i spend time with the kids.

      His wife is trying to argue it is sexist because '' he expect the women to do the cooking '' which is not valid. He doesn't refuse because he thinks that as a man he doesn't need to cook, he refuses because they expect him to cook without any warning and against his wishes.

    • @synthwolfe8906
      @synthwolfe8906 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Wife said it was sexist because she tried to spin it so that he was the bad guy. "Oh, you want us to cook? must be because we're women, and you just want us in there because women belong in the kitchen, right, sexist pig?"
      when the truth was more, "I want you to cook because you canceled my contribution against my will and without my knowledge. I want to spend time with the kids, not preparing food, and that's what i'm going to do. I made my contribution, you threw it away. If you expect a home cooked meal for 20 people, you're welcome to make it, but I won't be."

    Story 3: leave the relationship. She does not want OP to succeed and is probably jealous of his success in his health journey.
    ---
    Story 4: its an open relationship...yeah nothing to say here. The relationship is over. It sounds like OP did not want this arrangement and he only did it to keep the girlfriend. This can be insinuated with the following, "if I am saying it out of desperation of losing her because she knows I hate sleeping with other girls".

    • @TheAndromedaGalaxi

      @@TheAndromedaGalaxi agreed. i've seen multiple open relationships that are functional and healthy, but there's one thing they all had in common: They all went into it, knowing it was open with clear boundaries and limitations set. any closed relationship that eventually gets opened is most commonly doomed to failure, as most commonly, one party did not consent willingly consent to it (willful consent being the opposite to coerced consent. coercered consent is not consent, despite the eventuality of them saying yes).

    Story 3. The fact that the original poster stated that she's never acted like this before, but seems to be getting like this over the idea of him dieting... Sounds a lot like she thinks that by him dieting he will become more attractive and therefore thinks he might get more attention from other girls. It sounds like that she thinks that by him bettering himself he might get himself a better girlfriend.
    The ironic part is that by doing this she is dragging herself down and degrading her value as a partner by trying to intentionally sabotage his attempt to better himself, leading to him probably leaving her because of her behaviour. This will then just create a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's often the case with jealousy, your behaviour ends up pushing the other person and others away from you, rather than making them closer to you and push others away from them.

    Story 1: I agree with AITJ. That was horrible for that driver to do.
    Story 2: Agree with AITJ. OP did EVERYTHING to both justify his decision AND make everyone happy. His sister and wife are just so entitled. I get worrying about money, but that doesn't justify their actions, ESCPECIALLY since it wasn't THAT expensive, as OP pointed out, AND he offered to pay more than his fair share. If OP's sister and wife are too worried to spend $15 per person, and THEY decided to cancel the catering order, then THEY can bear the burden of cooking. Actions have consequences. This has nothing to do with gender.

    The wife and SIL in the catering are TA, not OP. OP had a reasonable suggestion with having the party catered. And $300? That does sound like a reasonable price. But no, wifey and SIL-LY just have to get their way with homecooked food. And trying to blindside OP with helping wifey with cooking the meal whilst SIL-LY plays with the kids. I afree that if wifey and SIL-LY are so obsessed with having homecooked food *they* can cook it themselves. I'd reconsider the marriage if I were in OP's shoes

    I have seen open relationships that work wonderfully. One key common factor seems to be that it needs to be open for everyone in the relationship, not just one of the individuals. Another is honest communication, which really is important for all relationships.
    Open relationships can be particularly useful in situations where one partner has much less sexual need than the other. I am personally nearly asexual. One person I am interested in romantically has a nearly overwhelming sexual drive. If we were to get together then I would simply not be able to keep up with their needs without damaging myself psychology, and they would not be able to deny their needs to a level I could handle without similar damage. So we would definitely need to be open in order for us to be functional. And I would know and be okay with that before we got romantically involved.

      i think what you said is completely true. all relationships ive seen have been bad for those reasons so i agreed with the narrator but when i look at it all the problems ive seen were listed by you. i completely agree with what you said. it needs to be EVERYONE and they need to be honest and accepting. i really like how you explained it. all relationships like that that i have seen have had the one person try to use it to control the other so its never looked good when ive seen it. but with your situation and your explaination it seems okay. i just hate how people try to use it for manipulation. thats all ive seen.

      @@sythonage5953
      Relationships used for manipulation is a common failure state for all sorts of relationships, not just open ones.
      Really I think most people who try to have open relationships don't actually understand what it involves, and aren't emotionally ready for it. I have seen bad ones too, so I am not saying they are all good. They need to fit the people involved, just like any relationship. And it can be hard to tell what fits you until you try it. Another common failure state is trying being open and it working for one person but not the other, or others in some cases. In such cases there really isn't a way to succeed, as either open or closed one person isn't getting what works for them.
      There are a lot of good forms of open relationships, but the key part I have seen is that they are done as partners and not as individuals. It can be a difference in needs, like I described before. Sometimes it is a mutual fetish, and sharing in it actually brings people closer together. Or the relationship itself may be far more romantic than sexual, and so sex isn't really a confining factor.

    About open relationships:
    They *can* totally work, but only if you’re in it for the right reasons. I’m in one of 3 years, and being open has only helped us. But it’s important to note that the reason that we’re in one is due to us not being compatible in bed. I’m close to be asexual and he has desires that I just can’t satisfy. So it was a simple solution to go open for that.

    Story 2) there is something the OP didn't talk about in his story, i know for a fact a catering service cooking a full meal for a party of 20+ would definitely request a deposit and partial payment for ingredients and would most likely have a cancellation charge in their contract and depending on how close the wife cancelled to the event the charges can increase quite a bit. so by cancelling and then attempting to cook for themselves it probably cost the same as if they had just let the caterers do it, except now the wife and husband if her plan went as she planned would have to waste the entire day cooking and not actually enjoy their own party.

    As someone that is in open relationships, I’m pretty tired of having to justify my romantic preferences to monogamous people. In my open and Poly relationships, everyone is always happy. It’s not “cheating with extra steps.” It’s a partnership between consenting individuals. If someone is in a polyamorous relationship and favoring one of their partners, or if they’re getting super upset at people spending time with other people, then they don’t need to be in a poly relationship because it’s obviously not good for them and their preferences. And just because relationships have the possibility of ending doesn’t mean that you should rag on specific kinds of relationships and use them ending as justification. That would be like me saying that monogamy is just crippling codependency that ends in arguments and misery.

I've seen and experienced relationships like that and all of them have been one person wanting to cheat basically and the other not being comfortable with it but the person who wants to cheat just says they will break up with the uncomfortable partner if they don't comply. or they may allow it immediately but in reality they cover up the fact that they hate it. it has NEVER worked out. and I can even list one example off the top of my head. jade smith and will smith. random example but its true. every time I've seen the person who wants it to be poly basically wanting to cheat without consequences. and also when the Other decides to work with it and go with someone else. the ORIGINAL person who wanted it poly or open doesn't like it. and gets mad and jealous. telling them to quit cheating. and they use the word cheating too. its not good at all in my opinion. all situations I know of have been toxic and really toxic at that.

Or when one partner tries making the other jealous. Or when one partner tries to control what the other partner ca do with their friends. I can name an example off the top of my head, too- Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Random, but it’s true. And every time I’ve seen the partners get together in closed monogamous relationships, one partner always ended up trying to exert power over and manipulate the other partner, and when problems in the relationship were brought up, they would argue instead of working things out, and when they had conflicting wants and needs, they would fight and scream at each other for weeks or months or even years instead of just talking about it and agreeing that they weren’t compatible.

You can't just be like 'If it's meant to happen, things will work out by themselves', leave it to fate and hope the dice rolls in your favor. Every relationship requires work from everyone who's in it, including open and long distance relationships. Every relationship can work as long as the participants are able and willing to take the necessary steps.

    Story 1: I hope that guy loses not only his license, but the privilege to drive altogether, because NOBODY needs to be behind the wheel treating other people like that, especially when it ends in a DUI, cause that means your judgment was too impaired to let alone keep to yourself.
    Story 2: Although I understand OP's Wife & SIL's reasons for disagreeing with his plan, it's the reason why they IGNORED the part where HE said he would take care of it so no one would have to, so that everyone could relax & socialize. In fact, it was the influence to shut the plan down altogether & throw his hat in the ring for him when it came to theirs, ALL behind his back no less, & only to get accused of sexism for saying no? I know it would make me the jerk myself, let alone petty, since the party I'm planning isn't for me, but I'd feel too disrespected to even have it anymore, cause OP's wife & SILs' thought process in this decision shows EXACTLY where he stands with it according to them: ONE thing I don't like about your plan, & you're not in charge & you can't take that back. If you don't call that disrespect, you have NO sense of it, let alone know what is.
    Story 3: There's no talking with this EB that you call your GF. She's disrespecting your health journey enough to throw it in your face, not to mention ruin any cheat days you give yourself. In my book, she does NOT care about you. The way she's acting is how someone WOULD act if they don't believe in being able to lose weight. Even if the proof is in the pudding(pun intended), which it is, in their mind, "Once a fat kid, ALWAYS a fat kid." So she IS being a bully, & until she REALLY comes clean to a reason why, assuming there is one, then I'd rather find a new GF if I were you.
    Story 4: If you have to have a 2nd opinion about yourself from someone other than the one in your relationship, then you're really just too narcissistic & have no business BEING in a relationship, open or otherwise. That is all.
    Story 5: No. That's not a red flag. THAT'S A DEATH SENTENCE! Of course making fun of a cancer survivor is only funny to the person doing it. It's like how we have people on tiktok & twitter posting videos of themselves doing crappy stuff to other people(Eating in front of homeless, walking in someone else's house, putting their hands on em). Those type of people only care about THEMSELVES finding it funny/amusing... as opposed actually caring about themselves. Otherwise, they wouldn't get mad about being confronted about it like THAT'S a waste of their own time. That's the only reason they play the discrimination card, so that people can shut up & leave em alone so that they can get away with it. Well one of these days, you're gonna act like that with the WRONG person, then by the time you realize how bad retaliation can REALLY get, it'll be too late.
