Creepy Time Limits # 10

  • The tenth episode.
    It's been a while since I've talked about Live A Live, my newest "one of my favourite games ever" from the olden days of yore. Sundown and the Old West chapter haven't got much of a look-in until now...
    Time limits. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. I like to take my time when playing video games, enjoying the experience at my own pace. But the moment I'm told that I'm going to be working against a timer, I can't help panicking. I'm thrown out of my comfort zone, and even the easiest tasks become tough to accomplish. Sure, it's good to be thrown out of a loop from time to time, and there's nothing wrong with a variety of challenges, but I always want the scary timer section cleared as soon as possible and move onto something else a little tense. In this series, I take a look at timer sequences in games that got to me the most.
    NOTE: In cases where bad endings and scary timers overlap, (Example: Bad ending requires a timer to run out) Creepy Bad Endings will win out, and the video will be a CBE video.

    Another thing to consider about the chapter is that the story they say about the 7th and the Sioux at the end of the chapter (the one where they only spared a single horse) is true. The game creators had clearly done their homework. Also Sundown's optional dungeon at the end-game chapter also has a creepy time limit, but you actually want it to end because you get a cool piece of armor at the end of the battle that follows it.

    • @nekonomicon9938

    • @seasidedoe2264
      @seasidedoe2264 Před 6 lety +15

      Granted, you really should make sure your party is strong though, as you have to fight a really tough optional boss quartet at once in order to get that armor (which getting the other pieces of from other optional battles is vital for a less painful final boss)

      Nekonomicon Google "Battle of the Little Bighorn" to get what happened. It's the battle where the 7th Cavalry, lead by General Custer, was defeated. If you're too bored to do that, here's the short version: General Custer dun goofed and the alliance formed between the Cheyenne and the Sioux massacred everyone. And, yes, they really did only spare a horse. As for what it has to do with the game go to 16:31.

      Yep, definitely no censorship in the remake. Annie b-slaps Pike the Outlaw, & they're very potty mouthed. It's not PG for sure, so it looks like the game is intact. 😆
      Edit: Some things have been censored, but not too much I hope. There's still potty mouthing going on, but O.Dio is less angry about Pike's death or something. The Caveman doesn't say "Love" anymore though, he says "AIII", which is love in early Caveman speech. They also renamed "P--sed Fist"

Thank you so much for showing me it! The influence really means a lot to me!

      Oh well, not everyone is going to enjoy what a single person likes, that's just how life goes. Nice to hear that you enjoyed Sundown's character for the little time he had. There were some aspects I didn't like about the game either, but that's the glory of Live-A-Live's structure; with the great variety of things there is in it, there's at least one thing for any kind of person to enjoy! I have to say, I did not expect that plot twist with Sundown's backstory at the end. That's what really made the Wild West Chapter one of my personal best, even if shortest Chapters in the game. My other favorite Chapter in Live-A-Live was the Feudal Japan one, especially with how long and epic it felt!

      The Qwertynator I like wild west type characters. TBH, he and others in the game could use some more development. I just like his chapter as well due to it was more of a puzzle and trial and error.

    I know you don't usually take requests but in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number there's a "creepy" countdown or timelimit while playing as "Beard" where you are to pick up your fellow friend and run through what seems to be a tunnel. If you don't make it in time you end up exploding in a facility you were planning to take over. The worst part is while going through the tunnel you never really know where to go and it ends up in memory. I remember my stomach twisting when I saw the timer. I thought that'd be cool.

      What you have to do is that you have to talk to the sheriff to tell him you're ready (make sure to talk to Billy first), then you need to talk to the townsfolk who will then set up the traps you tell them to, with each taking a certain amount of time to complete one trap (the sheriff, barkeep, and Annie are the quickest, so I recommend pushing most of the work onto them).

    • @LightsolP
      @LightsolP Před 6 lety +47

      @KaedeLanyo Před 6 lety +23

      Speaking of the name Odio, i also wonder if the name might not have been meant as a pun. Since "ō" can mean God or King depending on Japanese Spelling, and "Dio" is Italian for God.

      Not a coincidence at all. Like others have stated, the final bosses for each Chapter manifest hatred is some way. In fact, near the end of the game, at least in the deluxe translation that Whoisthisgit uses, Oersted describes the power of Odio as "It is hatred! It is Odio!"

    If I can suggest you one game for the Creepy Time Limit series, it would be the first Narnia game from PSONE. It's a game mainly created for the movie so certainly not a high-quality one. Yet, it features a very effective time limit in the very first level called The Air Raid. Not only the level is tense (throwing you into the action directly) with a great threatening time limit music, it's also frightening because it happened really in history (the unfamous London Blitz).
    I wish you wonderful winter celebrations to you and your kin ;)

    When I first played this chapter, I could get the Duo de Chico out of the way plus three or four gang members. Later, I could get all of the items but I accidentally set Annie to use another trap other than the Frying Pan, so I had to fight O. Dio plus one Dutton Brother. But just one of them isn't hard to defeat. Got them and finised the chapter, even though I was using a cheat to level up every battle (this caused some glitches with characters that weren't supposed to level up later, but who cares)

    You have Westerado, a pixelart Western game with multiple routes and a lot of replayability. Maybe you should check that game in the Steam sales. You should check that one! :)
    Despite is not a RPG, Call of Juarez Bound on blood is a very good shooter with a good story, and if you like it you should check the first game in the series: Call of Juarez. Bound on blood is the precuel of the first one, and the first one feels very different, more like you are on your own.
    Maybe Wasteland 2 should be interesting for you too, but a little I know about that game.
    In Bravely Second you have a class that is, in the occidental versions, a Cowboy, with a rifle and sniper skills.

    So, when I first played this chapter, I had little idea of what I was doing, and had no idea little tidbits of things to find and trap with. I managed to kill off all but 7 (Dio included) of the gang. It was a heck of a fight, but luckily his goons were in the way, allowing me to trap Dio and pepper him with Piercing Shots and such. But I soon found out very quickly just how powerful a Gatling Gun can be. And honestly, the 7 was the 2nd attempt, attempt #1 was 9 goons, and I had a heck of a time doing it.
    Still, I KNEW there had to be more traps, I just didn't bother looking for 'em, I guess.

    If you're looking for a wild-west themed RPG then I'd have to suggest the WILD ARMS series. The first two games were on the PS1 and the games after that were on the PS2. I really recommend the original WILD ARMS and Wild Arms 3. The first game is solid, a mix of fantasy and wild west aesthetics. However Wild Arms 3 really embraces the Wild West atmosphere and is all the better for it.
    However I'd suggest avoiding Wild Arms 4 and onwards if you're in a wild west mood. The wild west theme in those games barely feels like it's there and the game mechanics take a turn for the worst in my opinion.
    Though you should try whatever you feel you'd like. If you find any other Wild West themed RPGs then make sure to let me know, I'd love to play some as well.
    Oh! And West of Loathing is a great western RPG. It's goofy and the art style is all in stick figures, but don't let that fool you. It's a great game with a kickass soundtrack and a beautiful western feel.

    Can you do one of the game Zuma? In this game, the chain of balls is the timer ticking to your death. The timer can be stopped, accelerated (due to player stupidity), and even be slowed down or reversed. The main thing is to get rid of the ballchain before it reaches the skull. At that point the timer hits 0 and you lose a life. When a level starts, the timer is between 20 and 30 to 35 seconds. So try Zuma.

    If you want creepy time limits, try S.O.S., Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, all three of which have full-game time limits (well...only *technically* in the case of Majora's Mask, as you can reset time).
    S.O.S. is probably the scariest of the three. You play as one of three playable characters on a luxury cruise ship that gets capsized in a storm. Your goal is to escape the ship through the boiler room while rescuing as many other passengers as you can within one real hour. Every time you die, you lose 5 minutes and respawn (though other passengers who die are gone for good). As time passes, the ship rotates more violently and the water level rises. Creepy music starts when you have, like...30 seconds left or so, and the water level rises completely. When time runs out, the ship sinks with everyone inside.
    Majora's Mask gives you 3 in-game days until the moon falls and destroys everything. With 6 bours left, everything begins to shake violently, the clock at the bottom changes to a timer, and perhaps the scariest music you will ever hear in a Legend of Zelda game plays.
    In Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, even if you don't take into account that you can save your game a limited number of times through the Save Coin system, you have the Dragon Counter to deal with. It increases even as you walk...and increases faster with other actions. It's impossible to decrease it or pause it...only to speed it up. At 100%, the dragon inside Ryu rips out of him in a very painful-looking silhouette scene.
