Verifying someone's identity isn't easy. Traditionally in IT we've used passwords to verify someone is who they claim to be, but passwords aren't as strong as you might hope. Multi-Factor Authentication increases the certainty that you are who you say you are. I think keypairs are the future of authentication. You lose it, you lose it, but it's practically unbreakable and can't be guessed by knowing a lot about you.
