- Many players completely underestimate the power of Distortion weapons in Star Citizen 3.19.1. What they don't know is with a little tweaking, Distortions can become one of the most powerful weapons in the game.
In this video, I am going to show you the secret to making the most out of your Distortions, including weapon combinations, and then I'm going to show you just how powerful they can be against ships that might even outclass you, such as the Scorpius. Using a mix of weapons, you can completely shut down opponents, sometimes in a single volley, pushing your Distortion only builds far beyond what they would be capable of alone. This is the ultimate guide where I show you how to disable your opponent in seconds.

They changed distortions a couple patches ago ~3.18. The bolts now have a small AOE so they can miss internal components on larger ships if your bolts do not hit close enough making the target sub-system keybind more useful. The new system is still a fast shield sapper because it does 0 hull damage but only damages the ships power plant for now, but will eventually work on all physicalized components/weapons.
When power plant reaches its max dist damage it shuts down the ship for 5 minutes. Once it recovers its immune to distortion damage for up to a minute sans the shields. In atmo getting shutdown is guaranteed death but in space makes capturing ships without putting them into soft death viable for boarding actions. Why pop the ship and hand load when you can take the ship intact and sell the goods then salvage it in a safe place afterwards for max profits.
A popular combo is the Vanguard using quad distortions on the nose with a fixed S5 laser cannon to finish off the crippled target or eva over and steal the NPCs ship. In industrial fleets I usually push them to run full distortions because they won't ever win a 1v1 brawl, but no ship survives being shot by a few distortions at the same time from multiple directions. Suckerpunch XL cannons can get you an escape window when caught mining alone sometimes. The SC lore of requiring all quantum capable ships be armed when its dumb on some ships makes sense when you take Distortions into account.

Is there a difference between distortion canons and repeaters? They do the same thing right ? What about neutron repeaters/canons?
@@rio20d Cannons have a higher alpha damage per bolt but slower rate of fire. Repeaters have higher DPS average from a higher rate of fire but less damage per bolt. It's a matter of preference to some. The Distortion effect is the same mechanics.
All that matters is getting more hits than misses. A cannon that hits 50% of shots may have higher DPS effectively than a repeater that misses 50% of its shots. Pick the one you like and can fight well with, and either will do fine generally. Their ranges vary some too so pick the range you fight well at.

I will always love distortions and disabling opens things up to a forced discussion, or a forced boarding.
Yup! Too bad they are mostly used to win PvP fights that have no intention to board.
Fantastic video! I never knew to look at the EM signature of the target I was shooting to see if they were shut down. Always just sort of waited for them to spin out of control.
All that ship HP is rendered useless. Shield HP is all that matters now.

I tried to fight vs pirates last day, in my tally with a buddy in the turret.
All the torpedos where of course avoided with ease, but also some quick salvos with distortions made my turrets inoperative, regardless of the shield, so couldn't do anything anymore...
The Tally has insane HP too. Distorts ignore that.
I love distortion laser combos... Ran them on me redeemer last patch guess I should run it again it was so fun having the freedom to choose between killing or offing+boarding bounty npcs

@@BuzzCutPsycho until last week I was so focus on grinding auec so I used 4 lasers for faster kill now I finished my grind(thanks cig for nuking my ingame c2 with 19.1) I should go back to do the fun stuff. And maybe getting gud with distortion will help with bounty 2.0 im hyped
This is good info. I might switch out 2 of my scorpius's wing lazer repeaters for them just to test it out. If I can effectively stop them in their tracks I may switch up my load out more.
Try giving your gunner full distorts and you run lethally. You will be very happy with the results I think.

BuzzCut, could you talk about the current missile meta.
I just spent an hour or so fighting a group of shrikes, reverse boosting away from me in a hurricane single firing what I presume is size 1 missiles with the AOE proxy damage. I was only able to shoot down 1 player, the rest would stay at range, no matter how many flares I used I would still take hits. I assume they were using track IR to help keep lock at off angles.
Very frustrating, similar to how easy torpedoes are, it’s really not all that rewarding to fight against that many missiles.

I just recently switched to half repeater half distortion and my ship is now punching way above its weight class.
It's crazy. HP no longer matters!
Which ship are you using? I found distortions on a Hawk make it super deadly.

1. Gladius with 1 Laser / 2 Distorts
2. Hurricane with 2 laser / 4 Distorts
3. Scorpius with 4 Laser / 4 Distorts
4. Vanguard with 1 Laser / 4 Distorts, do whatever you want with the gunner.

How do these compare to laser repeaters in small ship dogfights, where you won't realistically get sustained fire on a competent target? Removal of HP is permanent, distortion effect has recovery. Is it enough to be worth it when you only get hits here and there?
You'd want to ideally mix them if flying alone or if in a group go full distort and tackle them.
for ground bases, do distortions affect vehicles and turrets? I don't know the first thing about how turrets work or if you'd just be better off using lasers on them.
They shut down vehicles very quickly but don't do jack to turrets sadly.
Just bought a Corsair. Why do you like the repeteres over the cannons? If you have them gimbled wouldn't the cannons be the preferred choice? Can you elaborate on your choice?
I prefer repeaters because it gives me a chance to kill fighters who are stupid in pvp. Otherwise I'd use cannons for pve.

They used to be a few patches ago. They got nerfed hard. Looks like they are making a comeback again.

@@squirrellordsgaming2772 They are brutal now. You have to know where to hit larger ships or the AOE won't hit the power plant to shut them down and has a damage falloff the more off target you are. Once shut down though it lasts 5 minutes.
I actually built a shrike with two S2 D repeaters and thunderbolts, thinking it would be a meme. Turns out it’s one hell of a monster. Use it as a distraction when flying in a wing. Enemy focuses on me? Too easy, my wing mates rip them apart. They go after any of my wing mates? I send up to 4 EM missiles (depending on size of ship) and pepper them with the distortions and they drop out of the sky.
distortion has a high power trade off so because of capacitors you have limited shots in some ships but hey any ship with a turrett can go BURRRRR.

You won't be able to fit DR repeaters or Suckerpunch cannons on it, they max out at S3. You can get distortion scatterguns in S4, maybe S5, though.

I run to distortion size ones on my buccaneer, and the rest is laser repeaters, and have been known to shut down retaliator‘s and reclaimers

I have done several tests and yes, some ships can be disabled in seconds and some simply not. Same components, same class but totally different result. Why ? I don't know. Maybe server desync, lag, bug. What I've learned is that it's faster to destroy a ship with laser repeater than disable it. It simply to long (or impossible) to disable an Hercules/Carrack than soft dead it.
Shooting stationnary ship is absolutely not the same as a combat situation.
PU and AC are very different i agree. I've had massive success with distorts on PU.

Does it work on NPCs as I tried it a while back and distortion doesn’t seem to work or have much effect.
It works on them. A ship shut down works on NPCs too. The issue is NPC size 2 shields are bugged and that may present an issue.
I can confirm it works because I've distorted cutty blacks over Ghost Hollow on microtech
I wish there were size 4 distortion repeaters and Canon so I cut bring back the distortion hammerhead a the good all days from before 3.14

Does this mean EMPs are good or are they a different flavor of distortion damage? Ive been out of the loop since like 3.17
EMPs are unreliable sadly. They work the same but difficult and unrealistic to use.
Two questions. When running my gladius should I be distortion heaven or light. And would a cannon build be better because the sucker-punch 3 has higher burst damage than the XJ, and in your recent video on hitting targets, close quarters results in better results which throw into question if cannons ore repeaters are better because the range-velocity advantage of repeaters is less valuable because of CQC dogfighting
I recommend repeaters because of the current meta favoring high projectile speed weapons.
A reaper (laser or distort) flies at about 1700ms
A cannon (laser or distort) flies at about 700ms
Most ships just flat out move faster, even at close range. This is why people use repeaters.
@@BuzzCutPsychodid some erkuling. Using 1 D-Cannon and 2 L-Cannons grants me 69% of distortion and 200% laser damage compared to 2 D-repeaters and 1 L-repeater. But I’m definitely going to test this in the field and get a better feel. Thx

@@BuzzCutPsycho using AC Pirate swarm to anecdotally test (I’m away from my main rig and the laptop I have isn’t great), the distortion heavy repeater load out is superior, the laser heavy cannon load out is viable against larger ships but because of the current LFighter meta it’s hard to pull off, however my R&D team is working on more definitive results.
interesting, I should try this, I usually go with hurricane with one buddy of mine, is it better if the turrets use distortion and the main repeaters on the ship use laser? or should it be the other way around?, or it doesnt matter?
Nose has the size 4 lasers, let the gunner rip them up with the size 3 distorts x4.

I use the a few rhino's along with deadbolt's x 3 and one distortion on the Corsair. With Omniski VI as remote turrets. Enemies don't appreciate it much.

@@BuzzCutPsycho Dead Bolts are stop in your tracks. Using the Rhino's as first click with a distortion once weakened then you give the full meal deal. All a player can do is try bro. You have the knowledge. Good advice on the missiles and the shields, padlock.

Apparently powering off your ship gives you distortion immunity.. this would only be helpful in space and if the guy shooting you was full distortion and no rockets. Also your going to be not moving anyway because the ship is off so he has effectively done what he was intending to do with out doing it.. but you won't blow up and you would in theory be able to power on and quantum away if your good enough at running away.
My current corsair loadout is 4 gimballed ad4b ballistic gatlings, and 2 gimballed ndb-30 laser repeaters. Would it do me good to switch the laser repeaters out for distortion weapons? I’m new to pvp
For pvp you sadly need all repeaters. It depends on what you want to hunt. Your size and above? Fixed cannons. S5 on nose and S4 on wings. Run away from little ships.
General purpose? S4 laser repeaters (gimbal) on nose and and S3 distortion repeaters (gimbal) on wings.
@@BuzzCutPsycho I tried fixed weapons, but it just didn’t work out for me. Had a really hard time aiming. Probably just going to change the ad4b’s out for rhinos, and change the ndb-30’s for distortion repeaters. Think that could work? Thanks

Doesn't distortion weapon got less damage than laser ?
I mean to shutdown component you have to go through shield first, and seeing the stats on erkul distortions weapons do around twice less dps than their laser counterpart.
It's only effective when damaging the hull, but if you take twice as much time to destroy the shield I don't really see why they are even considered to be useful in a loadout.
You basically lower your Dps to be able to shutdown component but since most ships got more hull HP than shield I would say the trade seem worth it.
If we do some gross math, it would mean that if you had 4 lasers repeaters and replace 2 of those with distortion one, you basically have 3 weapons laser repeater worth of dps.
Also, canon seem to be better compared to others canon, for example if the difference between in damage with a size two laser repeater and a size two distortion repeater is higher than the difference in damage with a laser canon and a distortion canon.
Size 3 laser canon do around 30 000 theoretical damage (rof+alpha) a Size 3 distortion canon do 20 250. So it's more 2/3 than 1/2, which is really good.
But the same cannot be said for distortion repeater compared to their laser counter part, the difference in damage is more than 60% for the three size, so it's more of a 2/5 for them.
I changed my canon loadout on my Buccaneer to add, two size 2 distortion canon, they only lower my theoretical damage by 9080 per gun (they do 15120 damage when size 2 laser canon do 24200).
Size 2 distortion canon are the distortion weapon with the highest damage closer to it's laser counter part. At only 9080 damage difference while the size 1 is at 9240 and size 3 is at 9750.
Meaning it's the most efficient slot-in distortion weapon in the game. You have a ship with multiple weapon hardpoint of different size run a canon loadout and want distortion ; do not think and just choose the size 2 or 1 because you'll lose less dps than the others.
If you really like distortion repeater, they're just dogshit compared to laser repeater. Size 1 is at 10560 dps diff, Size 2 is at 11610, and Size 3 is dead at 15420. So id you really want a distortion repeater loadout just go small, you will be pleased with keeping your higher size for something that do damage.
Distortions do less damage (technically no damage) and only impact shields and components. They end up being more lethal because they ignore a ships health pool and only target their component health. A very durable ship such as the Connie is in no danger of dying to a small ship with repeaters but if it is running full distorts it can very reliably shut it down without having to worry about its HP pool.
Also distortions do AOE damage. So they hit all shield faces at once. In some cases that essentially becomes quad damage. Disortts are broken imo.

I wonder how effective running a distortion would be on my 325a, possibly in the S4 slot. I pretty much only just do PvE stuff unless PvP is forced upon me though, so I'm not sure how beneficial it could be. I suppose if I can disable a ship in space, missile can finish it off; in atmo, the ground can do that.
Sadly size 4 distorts only come in the form of scatters. Unless you gimbal and run 3s.

How do you think this would fare on a Defender? It's been my favorite ship by far and I'd love to get more use out of it. I did manage to do my ert cert mission in it (killed a HH), and man it took a while. I imagine this might've made it a bit easier
Quite well. Especially if you are fighting in atmosphere. You have a lot of fire power on that think and it handles very well on Microtech and the like.
All my ships with 3 or less guns have 1 distortion. All my ships with 4+ have 2. Have for a while. Imho, the biggest advantage in things like PVP is making people panic... when things stop working. Makes your brain stop and Go...what.. huh..whats happening... is this a bug.. what...

Experienced it yesterday, it takes a couple of distortion shots and you're toast, can't fire back. I presume it will get nerfed in a near future, but in the meantime, my PvP loadouts are now full distortion for playing the meta game.
I suspect it will be changed. I hope so. It's actually pretty lame how powerful they are.
@@BuzzCutPsycho I really hope they deliver on Master Modes, because with PvP clearly not being competitive in Star Citizen, players need at least a fair shot at opting out of combat.
I had the misfortune of being in a Freelancer MAX being attacked by a Cutlass Blue with distortion weapons. I has surprised just how quickly my MFDs started glitching and the ship, with 2 size 2 FR-76 shields, was turned off. Distortion weapons usefulness waxes and wanes from patch to patch, this video is really timely as it seems they are back with a vengeance now. They are also much cheaper than laser repeaters to buy.
It's also good at causing panic. I've never seen so many combat logs before.

If you have DPS and you're just going for a single target out of a group, it might be better just to have lasers so you could scurry off really quick, but if the distortions allow for atmosphere shutdown kills it might be worth it? That or just to pop an enemy or two out of the way so you can focus a big guy and vice versa.

I tried running 4x S4 CF-447 + 2x S3 XJ-3 on the Corsair (all gimbals). I honestly couldn't tell if it made any difference against Hurricanes, Wardens, Valkyries and Reclaimers.
I might switch it to all cannons (though I'll have to use S5 cannons and S3 distortion cannons, it seems). See if the big guns make a difference.
...I'll need to learn how to aim the Corsair first, though!
@@diminios corsair is unique and despite the distorts i still run it as all cannons for PvE. Tomorrow I plan tontrt pvp in it with distorts for the laughs though:)

It's almost silent otherwise. Can't find another video in my recent history or current list that has this issue.
