6233 & 60163 - The Duchess & Tornado Soldier On In The Face Of Adversity !

  • Two big pacific locomotives would take to the Welsh Marches line on the same day and both were due to pass each other around the Leominster area. The day's event had all the potential to be a memorable one but due to a tragic and unforeseen circumstance all trains were halted and the Welsh Marches Line was closed due to a person being struck and killed in the Ludlow area, this awful incident was investigated and declared a suicide. Thoughts are with the family of the deceased. All trains including the two steam trains were now close to two hours late and this would cause further delays for the return part of their trips.
    In regards to our day, we first capture the Duchess at Condover on the approach to Stapleton near Dorrington, three angles capture this with 6233 looking splendid as she negotiates the reverse curves. Having moved on from filming 6233 we turned our attention to Tornado. Having dropped off my dad at Wistanstow I arrived at Onibury and no soon as I was set up I received a call from a friend who was on the train and confirmed the bad news and that they were going nowhere for the next few hours, though they could get under way as soon as the investigation work at Ludlow had finished, so we could't really up sticks and leave just in case they left sooner than anticipated.
    Now stuck at Onibury and now ahead of the Duchess I was given another chance to capture her again. Tornado was currently stuck at Hereford, so I calculated I would have enough time to capture them both at opposite ends of the location once all services resumed, or did I ?? All services have now resumed two hours late, 60163 Tornado was much quicker out the blocks and had already been on the move for 10 minutes before the Duchess began to depart Craven Arms, it was a slow crawl away and the Duchess was losing time while Tornado was storming along and making up its deficit. So, the Duchess came into view, I filmed it and no soon as it passed I was off pretty quickly with my heavy gear back towards where I first arrived, not a quick walk I can tell you. Having arrived out of breath, I now attempted to set up my tripod, camera and microphone ! My camera and tripod were partly set up and ready to go and just as I turned my back to position my directional microphone which was also not plugged in I heard a light roaring sound on approach, surely not ! Yes, it was tornado bearing down on me, my camera was already on so I pushed the shutter and zoomed in as quickly as possible and I was just able to capture at least half of the intended video. My apologies for a botched result.
    With Tornado sneaking up on me, there was absolutely no chance of a repeat scenario at Wistanstow, where my dad captures Tornado on the climb to Church Stretton. So that was that, we was going to chase it to Ruabon but we were rather tired and decided on a pub lunch and a slow drive to Kidderminster as we had plenty of time to kill while we awaited for the return of the Duchess. The return leg of the Welsh Marches was now heavily delayed due to earlier events and running 90 minutes late the Duchess made a fine sweeping pass through Kidderminster with a service train looped in the sidings to allow a clear run for the late, superior train, we also used up all our luck with what was coming directly behind us !
    So, a sad and challenging day for all concerned but it all ended well with the dramatic passing of 6233 through Kidderminster mainline station.

    Oh dear. RIP. What a challenging day.
    Must confess that I skipped most of 6233 footage. An open cylinder drain cock (?) on a loco at speed always throws me off. Sounds like me panting on a run. So much of the pleasure in your videos is the sound. Great footage all the same.

      I'm not an expert, but I did wonder about that "chuff chuff" with the steam escaping on every stroke. Didn't look right to me - thanks for explanation!

      Yes it does ! Have filmed on the Welsh Marches many times but never in peak Autumn, as you say, superb backdrops !

    Lovely video, fantastic choices of locations and the autumn colours you captured are amazing. I'm now in love with a Duchess, but it's a rather one-sided relationship! Definitely no need to apologise for your shot of Tornado starting late. I had a similar experiences with Tornado and Flying Scotsman the week after we met at Langwathby. It's great that you captured so much of it.
    I had aimed to get down there myself to capture the only operational Stanier Pacific for my first time but my adversity started days earlier! In a sad way it's for the best as I had an online appointment too and the delay caused by the human tragedy would have botched my day completely and possibly left me without any daytime footage.

    Tornado’s one of those locomotives 🚂 that everyone loves and flocks to see. The other locomotive, although relatively normal for the Cambridge Main Line, has never been used between Liverpool Street and Cambridge North.

    In 1977 on my very first day as a Guard on the South London third rail network, I discovered a dead body stuck between the 750v DC third rails at North Dulwich station. I was in the front cab with the driver as it was about 05.30, on an 8-car formation of Bulleid "Old Mary" EMU stock. The driver pointed his bardic lamp at what I had thought was just a pile of rags ! "Hand me a hook switch pole, its a corpse " he said. To my stunned amazement he picked up a (womans) decapitated head, and immediately moved it clear of the running lines. I then had to get out and help him haul the body out from between the 750v live rails, using the (insulated) hook switch pole. This too we put carefully at the side of the running lines. The driver then phoned the signalman from the signal post phone to report the incident, and state "No foul play suspected, as the body is within 200yds of Suicide Bridge, and is now clear of the running lines". He then returned to the cab, and we continued around South London with the train. Delay probably no more than 5 minutes !!
    In those days BR had sensible laws for dealing with such problems. Civil Police and Emergency services were NOT allowed on BR property to deal with dead bodies, until qualified Transport Police were there to guide them. The BR rule book stated that if foul play was NOT suspected when finding a body, it must be moved clear of the running lines, so as not to delay trains and thousands of passengers. As the body in this case was close to an overbridge which carried a minor road into a Mental Institute, the driver had correctly guessed the victim was a suicide by a mental patient !!!

    May I ask a possibly naive question about the diesel 'bankers'? One sees them a lot being added to the rear of a steam excursion train. Are they there to help mitigate the wear and tear on the steamers? One imagines Tornado and the Duchess can flog up an incline with the best of them, but that their bearings and other parts may wear out more quickly without a little assistance. Thanks!

      The current use of diesels on the rear is nothing to do with wear and tear and is mainly down to the fact we're in leaf fall season where railhead conditions are at their worst. Some diesels are used for turning and to provide power for the coaches. The diesel on the rear in the first scene is there because the coaches are Vacuum braked, meaning the stock is not air braked and if the steam loco broke down, its unlikely there isn't any spare dual braked rescue diesels around that can operate vacuum only coaches, most rescue diesels are air braked only, hence why this featured excursion has took a diesel along. This has nothing to do with the reliability of the steam loco upfront. This period from October to December sees the majority of steam hauled specials with the inclusion of a diesel, though some trains may escape the need for this, like hopefully this weekend !

      The trip with 46233 was dismal. It somehow lost half an hour between Hereford and Snow Hill. The only time it got up speed was downhill when it could coast. For the first time in sixty years I got the number of an oncoming loco when it crossed 60163, not pre-announced by the train crew, a reminder of how sharp you had to be as a spotter!
