kramer 84 guitar vs evh striped

  • Here is my Kramer the 84 vs an EVH 5150 Stripe series guitar. Both guitars were recorded direct with a Freidman JJ Jr 20 watt amp to a Two Notes Captor X reactive load.
    I play in a Van Halen/Sammy Hagar tribute: The Best of Both Worlds Fla and I've tested both these guitars live on stage in action and studio. They both have similar characteristics but vary slightly.
    The VH tracks you hear have the original guitar removed and I overdubbed my own take of the famous riffs. I've included the isolated riffs as well for you to compare. The Kramer was custom painted by FunkGuitarsUSA. Enjoy the tone wars!

    Both sounded great, if you didn't know the Tonezone was Larry's pickup design for the EBMM EVH model. Eddie chose another pickup so Larry released it as the TZ. I have it in multiple guitars and love it, of course I also love the Wolfgang pickups as well though... just different as many have noted.

      I gotta agree here the EVH is the real deal.... So damn close to eddies tone not to take anything away from the Kramer but you can definately tell they spent what they had to to get the EVH as close to Ed's sound as humanely possible... Either way both are awesome guitars and yeah your playings damn fine too

    I agree with you. I have both the EVH 5150 Special in Tobacco Sunburst and a Kramer Pacer Classic. There is quite a bit of difference in the price with the EVH coming in at about $1100 all in (shipping, etc.) and the Kramer I picked up locally for $400. The Kramer is VERY HEAVY as it weights considerably more than the basswood EVH. If I dropped the Kramer I would NOT worry about it as it is REALLY PUT TOGETHER (and it costs 1/3 as much!!!! ) Both the Kramer and EVH both have the stock pickups still installed.
    Sound wise, I really like both guitars but I think mine are a little more different than your two guitars (as you have The 84 which cost about twice as much as the Pacer Classic). The stock pickups on the Kramer SHRED. It is definitely a Kramer copy of a JB, or something in that range. It is ALL 80's hard rock sounding, which I LOVE. On the other hand, the EVH definitely has more low end grunt to it and can be used in a lot more types of music and still sound at home and awesome. Both tones can be changed dramatically with any type of pedal, computer program, amp, etc. But bare bones, I would describe the Kramer as really an 80's sounding guitar and the EVH more well rounded, not quite as hard rock sounding, but still effective in all types of songs.
    I would give playability to the EVH hands down. The neck is amazing and the build quality is superb. The EVH Floyd Rose trem is a mile better than the Floyd copy on the Kramer Classic.
    I am NOT NEARLY as good of a player as your are but for anyone reading this I would say if you are really wanting the 80's hard rock sound, consider the Kramer as the build quality is great and the tone is great (Think VH, RATT, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, White Lion, Mr. Big). If you a die hard VH fan (like I am) go ahead and get the EVH as you will NOT be disappointed. The build quality and sound quality are both great. With the EVH you can play ANYTHING with it. Or better yet, get BOTH of these guitars, as both are great sounding guitars that will give you hours of enjoyment like I did!!!

    I have both as well and the EVH definitely sounds better. In fact, EVH pick-ups are the best for rock tone in my humble opinion. But the Kramer headstock is definitely sexier than the altered EVH’s. But the Kramer’s neck is a bit thicker than EVH too, so playability for fast licks is more difficult, in my opinion. Great customization you have done on the Kramer though.

    Ok, I listened through a speaker and not my crappy phone, but even with that on CZcams I don't think you get true sound. It COULD sound totally different in person but over CZcams, I think the difference is so small that most people would say they can't tell a difference. Now I'm a guitar player so I know how we can be.
    I'm glad you mentioned the radius and the playability though because to me that's just as important as the sound. I went from a 10 - 16 compound radius to a 14 only on my new pacer vintage, the classic has a 12 and I don't know why they just didn't make them the same, and it took some getting used to especially the narrower neck.
    I've always been a DiMarzio fan, so I love the tone zone.
    Speaking of which, if you really wanted a totally even comparison, I would of used the same pickup, although with the body woods and as I mentioned , CZcams, the difference still may have not been that noticable.
    Anyway, great playing, wish I could do some of that Van Halen stuff. Lol next you need to do a black and yellow! :)

      I put a video up with the Kramer now with an Evh pickup. It’s brighter than the Dimarzio. czcams.com/video/CVAR4womKUM/video.html
      However as you mentioned, in the room or onstage is the true gtr tone. The Kramer has more bottom and strat-ish mids no matter what pup is in it and simply is fun 80s shred gtr. EVH have their own thing and more tempered high end with some lows but in the similar frequency as the Kramer, ultimately a different animal. The rest Is the player and chops. Thanks🎸😀

    I think the evh had the closer tone but I’d go for the 84 as you said it’s more affordable and I’d put in an evh humbucker. Might do the to my Barretta special

    As owner of several super strats which include a mij WG and a Frankie relic, the Wolfgang Humbucker is great. Easiest to pull any type of harmonics and quite versatile for a bridge pickup. You can play a variety of different types of music.

  • @dotkennedy7443

    Doesn't the Kramer have a more narrow nut width? I got rid of my EVH striped series because the neck was too wide for my liking. I have a Wolfgang and it has a completely different (narrow) neck.

    • @BrevSullivan
      @BrevSullivan  Před 2 lety +1

      That difference is so negligible though.
      Speculating here on what your experiencing since I’ve played and still own them all and have reacted similarly ….. The Evh neck is way flatter than the Kramer so would feel wider with it’s compound 12-16 radius. Kramer neck is just straight 12.” and feels narrow. Wolfgang is the same as the Evh -12” to 16 but it doesn’t sit in the hands the same as the Evh stripe series that feel more like Charvels. I’m more partial to grabbing the Wolfgang as an everyday guitar, for any musical situation.

    The Kramer sounded better on some parts, but the EVH also had a deeper bassier tone on the bluesy riff parts. But the Kramer had the better tone on the high notes.

    • @BrevSullivan
      @BrevSullivan  Před 3 lety

      Saved Tons!! An open box 84 Kramer is as low as $600 if you keep an eye out on Reverb. Already owned pup. Paint reasonably priced.
      If you purchase a Kramer néw, pay top $ for a pickup, and overpay for what should be a modestly priced paint job, yeah you’d be paying for the price of a new 5150 stripe series.

    Hi Brev..what I 've experienced on this 84 re-issue model as well as other indonesian made guitars in general (aka cheap guitars),the intonation/tuning is getting lost after a few days unless the bridge is fixed/leveled to the body(spring tension must be so high)..so you can barely move the tremolo..otherwise tuning is lost and people mock lol....what do you think?

    • @BrevSullivan
      @BrevSullivan  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Agreed. And your correct. I’ve recently started using the Lok N Roll compensated nut and it really helps with that issue your describing.

    The Tonezone as a pickup is just almost overkill with the mids and bass, it’s a good application for guitars that naturally sound really thin and plinky to really beef them up.
    I have one in a HSS strat and I installed a treble bleed circuit so I can roll the volume pot back a bit to cut some of the mids/bass while keeping most of the treble, brings it closer sounding to the Wolfgang bucker.

    • @BrevSullivan
      @BrevSullivan  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes and the DUNCan was exactly that, THIN . I play in a VH tribute 3 shows a week that covers ROTH and Sammy era. Tried the DUNCAN in a real stage with amps and for me the TONE ZONE was clearer punchier and more accurate for the Sammy era which the tunes have more low end. I use the EVH a for the brittle bright Roth Vh 1 era and that sounds perfect for that era. A hard subtlety to articulate. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻🎸

    • @primeDecomposition
      @primeDecomposition Před 3 lety +1

      @@BrevSullivan Awesome! If you’ve never tried an EVH Wolfgang guitar (USA), try one! Maybe not the visual look for a classic VH tribute band, but it really represents his evolution in tone. THICK Beefy (yet very articulate) sounding guitar, mine even strung with 9’s vibrates and sounds like a guitar strung with 11’s unplugged, the Wolfgang pickup works GREAT in that guitar, but it’s almost too thick sounding for authentic early VH tones. Eddie REALLY knew what he was doing with the design of that one, super underrated guitar!

  • @noellippard686
    @noellippard686 Před 2 lety +1

    The EVH was more defined. The Kramer wasn't bringing out what was being played. He was doing more work than the amp was letting you hear.

    @AndyK.23 Před 2 lety +1

    Killer playing and demo! Gotta figure basswood vs alder, Tone Zone vs. EVH Wolfgang (or whatever) = different tones. The Kramer 84 needs a brighter pickup to match the EVH Frankie. Either way, great tone from both! I thought I read Ed took his Explorer neck and non-Kramer body, and slapped a Kramer logo on the 5150, for contract purposes?

      @@daved5343 it’s easier to access high notes on the EVH neck with its compound 12- 16”, but if your more into a modern strat feel, C neck 12” radius the Kramer feels great. Hard to decide, both deliver.
