  • In this demo we take a look at the fantastic Kramer 84 guitar. This iconic guitar is based on Eddie Van Halen's Kramer 5150 guitar which he designed in the mid/early 80's, and guitar that he used throughout the period of "1984", "5150" and "OU812". He even recorded with it on the F.U.C.K album. In this demo we dive into some EVH riffs, as well as kick off with a performance of the iconic solo Eddie played on Micheal Jackson's "Beat It". This really is a thoroughbred Rock Machine!! 🎸🎸 We Also take a quick look at the Kramer Baretta!

I played Kramers for years on the Sunset Strip in the 80s, mostly Barettas. They averaged between $600-$700 back then, so the price is not too far out of reach in today's money. But I only bought one brand-new and got the other three used around $300-$400. Sometimes I customized them, sometimes I left them as-is since they were ready to rock. That's the thing about Kramer that gave them an edge in those days. They had everything you needed and nothing you didn't to get the job done.

The bad thing about vintage Kramers is, if they are mint, the people want a fortune and if they are beat to hell, the people still want a fortune...it’s crazy!!!

Seems that way. Can I get any bucks for my Matsumoku-built Kramer Focus 3000?
I always thought these guitars were total hogs (clunky maple bodies) but it seems people buy anything these days… and the earliest fine tuner OFRs are really great.

On the issue of pickups, I prefer the Tone Zone to a JB, and if I had a Kramer today that's what I'd pop in it, especially if the Kramer has a maple fretboard which can be very bright.

A beautiful guitar. I've always been a VH fan. and Edward was among the greats.
I don't have this guitar per'se, but i do a a Left Handed EVH Stripe Series Stratocaster by Fender, and I really love it.
However, getting tones out of it is both fun, and challenging. i favore warmer tones, and taking Eddy's advice from the "Thank you" section of the manual, I haven't cleaned the neck (I'm letting it get mucky and dirty/dark), and letting the strings get older to produce a warmer tone.
It's a fun guitar to play, and glad to see Kramer still making this guitar.

This is a terrific review. Not only did we get a little bit of history about these guitars, so we could understand how they evolved, but we also got plenty of practical observations and dynamite playing demos. I looked at other reviews of the 84 and nothing else came close. This was exactly the info I needed, presented without hype and from somebody who obviously knows their stuff when it comes to EVH. I just bought one of these guitars online (a little different version, the Diver Down from the Music Zoo) and am looking forward to delivery. Excited to play it. The house will rock. Thanks, Jamie, for putting so much effort into this review.

Came across this video purely by chance and was amazed to see the white Kramer. It took me right back to '84, when we shopped for an amplifier in a music store in Southwest Germany. As I was trying things out, one of the guys there handed me a white Kramer guitar, almost identical to yours, which he said had been played by EVH himself there!!! It was of course a wonderful connection; I'd become a huge EVH fan at the time. The neck was relatively rough - unglazed - and the action relatively high; it had the same great rock tone. Unless I misremember, Kramer produced their own tremolos in those days. But I can't remember if it was theirs or a Floyd Rose on that guitar. Probably the latter; I think it was painted black, to contrast with the white paint. In any case, it was the first time I had played a guitar with a locking trem, which could be released so much that the strings just hung off the neck. Your playing is great, by the way!

What bothered me the most were the "shoulders" of the neck profile, it made it almost impossible to have any control over the strings on the upper frets. Looked pretty cool though.

Originally, I started looking for either a Les Paul style guitar with an FR or alternatively a guitar reminiscent of the G&L Rampage specifically because Jerry Cantrell is my guitar idol and that is the guitar he said was his first real guitar which he loved enough to use throughout his career. However, after doing some research I discovered that these Kramer Baretta style guitars pre-dated the Rampage, Rampages appear to be out of production leaving only used in the market *and* Kramer guitars are significantly less expensive.. so, what's the downside?

Is the body size of the 84 similar to a charvel dinky and jackson dinky, slightly smaller than a normal body (classic strat body) ? thanks! awesome playing btw!

    Hello,
How did you managed to lower the bridge this way ?
My bridge is pretty higher than yours and the strings are already very low. If I lower it more the strings will literally be touching the frets.
My problem is that I find the strings pretty far from the pickup.
    Best regards.

    • @Vince1974
      @Vince1974 Před 3 lety +1

The trussrod was too tightened so the strings were low...
Once loosen up the strings were too high so I could lower the bridge and now strings or closer to the pickup !
      With a Duncan 78, pretty cool !!

I’ve used a Baretta, but not the lower cost one. Sadly I’ve not played a 5150. I’ve reached out to try to get one on the channel. The 84 is great, but the 5150 Standard looks to be more versatile. I’d love to try one.
