- This week I sit down in the snake room to reflect on how the collection came to be in such a short time. Would I do anything different? What would I recommend for someone just starting out? Lets find out! #Opinions
I don't know what it is you got a quality about u that make me wanna keep up with what u got going on we all can't afford many snakes that we want but with time and the advice u give we can make it keep them humble videos coming I'm a big fan. And I love what you do.
Thank you! I really appreciate it
Just wanted to say, even with this being an older video I appreciate what you do and where you have come from. All of this is good info. I’m starting my collection with the intent of getting supers in the BEL complex. Male pastel lesser, female pastel lesser, ghi mojave, enchi lesser pinstripe. Also have a super yb (ivory), het pied male and a adopted het caramel/orange ghost (hypo). Won’t be breeding til next year as they are mostly under 750g.
If I had a chance to do it all over again there are some that I would get no matter what but I would have definitely like to be more focused great topic
Thanks!
Glad to know that I’m not the only one that started with an imbalance of males to females!! I’ve been trying since then to rectify the disparity between the sexes, but I’m not there yet. Another thing I didn’t do at first, that I should’ve, was buy breeding-age adults so I could get a jump start on my breeding until the “pretty” snakes that I bought for looks grow up to breed themselves. Great video!!
Great video with honest thoughts and comments
Thanks
I myself is still in the beginning stage. So I am going through trial and error. But I am willing to take the journey so that I can have my own story to tell. But guys like you help in a big way just by making videos like this. This is why I love this hobby. There is so much love shared by strangers that have the common goal. No matter the methods. I appreciate what you do, keep going. Nothing but good things for you.
Thanks for the kind words! Good luck on your journey 👍🏻
Great video thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks!
Great stuff as always, man! Focus is key, but you still gotta love what you do. Great advice! Keep up the good work Jason!
Thanks man. I'm trying
Great video and great advise!
Thanks
Excellent video and the advice is spot on. As a new "breeder/collector" myself I was lucky enough to catch a video by JKR early on where Justin talks about buying females first and having projects in mind. The problem that I have is that there are sooo many morphs that I think are awesome. lol So, I have quite a few projects in the works already that I wont see the end of for several years. But thats ok, it keeps it fun and interesting. Thanks for sharing this info and I could NOT agree more with what you have said here. Cheers!!
Solid video. Good job
Thanks!
Gotta start somewhere. Awesome vlog and collection!!
Thanks!
Outstanding video buddy I've always try take one day at a time and learn I've only been in this hobby about 3 years and I enjoy getting of knowledge and information from more experienced breeders I really hope there's a part 2 to this keep up the great work
Thanks for the kind words but I'm not an experienced breeder. Haven't had my first clutch yet
Great video Jason. I’m slowly catching up :) I know I’m not number crunching and that has to be done...personally I do like the idea of starting with single gene visual females and a multigene het male. The advantages of that are expectedly producing a nice multigene visual male in breeding season 1 and being able to pair visual to visual then as soon as year 2-3. I FEEL like the savings you get from buying a multigene het male instead of visual help eat into the added cost of the visual females but I’m aware the drawback is probably having to put more money up front. I went the het female/ visual male route. Has it’s own advantages as you outlined but it going to be breeding season 3 at least before I’m pairing visual x visual so. Little slower in that regard. I need to number crunch before I start my next recessive project to see which one would actually make more sense. Thanks as always great content
Great topic.. I’ve had the same feeling that there’s a lot I’d change. I mean I’m happy with what I have, but I’d definitely be more focused
Exactly. I'm not mad bit I'd change a few things
Great video love the honesty. I have been keeping my whole life but pretty new to breeding. I did the exact same thing to many males. Wish this video was out two years ago. Hope to see you in pamona
Unfortunately not gonna make Pomona. I think the next show for us will be Denver in November
I totally understand what you're saying I've got a lot of snakes but I also have a huge Variety in genes in my collection. You're doing great you'll be breathing next year. If you need anything im down to chat....
Thanks for the support
Great video. I'm the same way certain morphs I want to produce myself. I like the direct of my collection I have 6.17 3 females have been long time pets the rest are still raising up. Next season I'll pair 8 females with 3 of my males fingers crossed
Excellent video Jason! I started my collection buy buying 5 breeder females and male Pastave which in turned turned into a wild purchasing mode, so in the same sense I started pretty much the same way as you and a lot of other people! Over the last couple of years I really started to focus more on what I like and want to create my own projects! My only advice is to definitely start with purchasing females and take the time to figure out s direction you want to go! Great video again and thanks for sharing
Thanks
I'm just starting my collection, I have 2 females and a male so far but I think I'm gonna go down the double het route if I can find the right snakes some desert ghost pied or hypo Tri stripe would be nice
Love this video! It's hard to hold back when there are so many beautiful snakes out there but you need to focus if you want to be a breeder. Find a goal, map out how to achieve it, and keep the male to female ratio in perspective. I know how serious you are because you have a self sustainable feeder collection. Keep doing what you're doing bro. I can't wait to see what you produce
Thanks for the support 👍🏻
Dude this one slipped by me. Im probably a year behind you now as ive been following you for a few months. One of the best fucking vids ive watched in weeks. Nice man. Cheers from Scotland.
Thanks brotha! Scotland is a place I need to visit
@@MorphMixologyReptiles well Ive got a decent couch. Any time.
Started with a normal in a glass tank to 7 snakes in tubs only thing I would change is the size tubs I got
I'd say it depends on how big you want to go. Recessives certainly hold value longer, but new codoms and pioneering combos also provide big success for some breeders. The important thing that I completely agree with though, is to go in with a plan, or several plans and ensure that as a new breeder you're ready to get stuck with some snakes and be sure that you don't outgrow your food supply. June-Oct everyone's hatching out so feeders supply can get scarce make sure you plan ahead.
Exactly why I breed my own feeders
Great video, I started of years ago with a normal then discovered there were all these amazing morphs out there, then came the community of breeding found through CZcams, I kinda went mad buying anything that look nice with no thought or plan for the future, now I’m more focused on what I work with 👍🏻
Awesome. Good luck 👍🏻
Awesome video
Thanks 👍🏻
I've got a enchi, a leopard and a pastel ghi all 2017 females I wait for a 2018 mâle like a super OD or super enchi....
I have the perfect little breeding group for starting my breeding project: male pastel clown, female pastel het clown. Female spider het clown/pied. Female enchi het clown! They are all little and it’ll take around 2 years but I’m looking forward to it.
That's a good plan 👍🏻
I started my collection the same way a lot of males with few females. It now is 2 years later with finally getting egg production. I also branch out into many species before I was ready . Ball python, sand boas ,corn snakes, bearded dragon, leopard geckos, and hognose . My advice is stick to a species pick a couple really nice het example females with 1-2 visual males. Make profit from that keep one to two hold back visual females. I know it is tempting to get the money for those visuals I have had done . That just puts me behind on making nice breeding line.
That just my opinion

I'm just starting as of 3 months ago and I've heard you and others. Want to be in the hypo Gene and clown for receive, Russo, Pastel and banana for co-dom. Got a male pastel ghost Russo het clown. Female Russo het clown. Pastel Female. Want to produce BLE and awesome pastel ghost combos. Waiting on the banana Gene for a couple years in and a visual clown once things are rolling. Appreciate the video!
just subbed. Great topic and nice video
Thanks!!
Great video. I'm new to the breeding thing but I have a great start, 7 females and 1 male. Going to start adding recessives (cant make up my mind on which ones lol). I have about 1 year before I have to worry about buying males. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Good luck 👍🏻
I started my collection with no intention to breed, I would like to but my fiance doesn't support it. I just bought what I liked, wanted to have an eclectic collection and really turned my nose up at ball pythons. Now I love my bp's and love their morphs.
Great video man.. and i think we have all bought something we didnt really need lol.. i went a little male heavy at first which wasnt the greatest idea...but lately i have been buying for the future and mostly in recessives... i have caramel, orange ghost/hypo, and clown all in my collection a lot of which are het females and a couple visual males...
Good stuff man!
Although I have a small collection (7 snakes), I definitely started the wrong way. Started with a male killer bee. So a year, later I purchased a proven breeder female and luckily bred. I got 1 male and 5 females. Kept 1 female sold the rest. Should have kept all the females.
Since then I have purchased multi co-dom gene animals with the genes and potential combos I like. I will keep the females produced for future breeding. I just recently started with recessives and got a pair of lav albino het genetic stripes. I prefer the 1 in 4 chance to produce lav albino genetic stripe to the 1 in 16 chance with a pair of double hets.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Awesome stuff and good luck 👍🏻
yeah, I just started 'again' this year, the first time, I breed normals and Albinos a long long time ago when I was a teenager, then stopped but when I started there was only 4 or 5 Genes to play with and they were astronomical prices. But I just recently realized how many more there is today. but I've now got 15 BPs, but I did like you did and got crazy males at first, then took a step back realized I had to start my females out, so now I e really nice YOUNG girls. I'm still a few years out but I've set my future up nice. still not finished yet, but I'm close. my problrm is that i want in every project, can't get enough of you how diverse and beautifull different genetics are.
Excellent
Very good and awesome video. I'm very very new to this. I'm doing tons of research and these type of vlogs really help. I need to learn the python lingo to be honest. There's so much info out there that I'm spinning in circles. I started watching these type of vlogs to give myself some idea for a pet snake. But after discovering how big this community is, I'm afraid I want more than just one. Im starting to think of maybe 4 females and a male and we'll see where that leads me. But I need to do more research honestly.
Absolutely. Research is very important. But when you find what you like and might want to produce, a 1.4 or 1.5 (male.female) ratio should be good. Good luck and stick with it 👍🏻
I'm trying to start up......great advice. Thank you
Of course! Glad it could help
Morph Mixology Reptiles you going to any shows in TX. Would love to pick your brain.
We are going to try and make Arlington in Feb but no promises
Morph Mixology Reptiles where do you live at if you do mind
Montana
I started my collection when I decided I wanted to work with the hurricane gene. My overall goal is to produce (hopefully the first) hurricane axanthic. My collection so far includes a 0.1 mojave, 0.1 leopard 66% poss. het pied, 0.1 pastel bamboo, 0.1 pewter, 1.0 desert ghost, 1.0 banana, and my 1.0 hurricane blaze will arrive in september. So clearly I am missing the axanthic animal I will need for my goal. I still don't know what I want to do for that animal. I am debating purchasing a 2018 hatchling, a 2017 hatchling that is absolutely stunning, or a very unique 2010 proven breeder.
Awesome. Good luck 👍🏻
My girlfriend and I have 13 right now. The only thing I would change about how we put our collection together is explaining the principle of buying ~3 females to every male and to have a goal in mind to her. We started with 3 males and 1 female because she kept buying "the pretty snakes" and not checking genders. I'd come home to her with a new snake going "Isn't he pretty? You can work him into your project in a few years" lol
where do you normally buy your BP from?or do you recommend any where?
Reputable breeders. Morphmarket.com is a great resource
@@MorphMixologyReptiles thank you I appreciate it.
I only have 4 balls but yeah I messed up big I bought a het clown male first but that's b4 I thought about breeding
Awesome video man...awesome advice..:see I went the opposite way when I started...I had my main male for yrs...picked up our first adult female who was a normal and put her with my male.. I made the mistake when I went to a show..I bought a baby female pastel not know it takes 3yrs to get up to size. Then I bought more babies...now we have a small variety of ball pythons..we have 17 ball pythons so far..still growing...awesome video and can’t wait to see what your breeding plans are. And hopefully see you at Pomona super show. And check out our latest video we’re doing a giveaway.
Thanks 👍🏻
yeah - starting with females if you want to breed is definitly something I would have done differently. Anyone thinking about the possibility to breed should be told! Great vid
Thanks 👍🏻
Old man told me one time if u know everything it time to quit. Everyday every situation is similar but different.
I went for what I think is a fairly wide range of genes with the money I have available. I only have ten snakes and one female more than the males. Holdbacks will give me a wider range. However, I may have totally f*cked up LOL
Sounds like you are doing fine. Good luck
Ok so I wanted to do a video similar but to be honest I'm swamped with work and I havent been motivated. I was in the same shoes as you when I started buying. I found what I liked, it was quality and it was a Male haha. I believe that is ok because if you enjoy looking at that Male day in and day out as a pet and potential breeder than theres nothing wrong with that. Buy recessive and buy females! That's it. Hands down...I have more to add but I dont feel like typing haha. If you like a specific morph, think further than that and start planning with females. Think ahead to what you can add to what you like and start there. (Sorry I'm rambling)
You and I are clearly on the same page
Morph Mixology Reptiles there is definitely a formula to getting the collection to what you like and to what others like in order to be a successful breeder and business. It wasnt there for me when I got into it but, like you, I wouldn't have started this collection I have now as it stands. I would have taken a whole different route similar to what you've laid out here.
anyone watching this i would do het pied females and a nice visual recessive male its much cheaper
You shouldn't keep tons of rodents next to your snake collection. Your snakes are going nuts always smelling food. This is really basics for a breeder. You no need to listen to me, just go ahead and show your setup on a FB group, they will tell you same thing.
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree. The feed response on feeding day is excellent, yet I don't have any issues opening any tub the other days. Maybe breeders keep them together and have for years with great success. Thank you for your input and concern.
I didn't say there would be no feeding response, i said a different thing, don;t keep rodents and snakes in the same place, because your snakes will always smell food. How would you feel smelling your favorite food 24/7 but getting it once a week? Ask, Vin Russo, Peter Kahl, Brian Barczyk, they will tell you, you are wrong. FYI, i've been breeding boas for the past 22 years. Ask around and you'll soon agree with me and all reputable breeders.
