22 years! The interviewer was shocked by that… today that takes us back to the year 2000. Nobody would bat an eyelid if we dressed like someone from 2000 today. This is very wholesome. The guy is doing what he likes, what makes him happy and has the confidence to go on TV and tell everyone he doesn't care what they think (which would have been a huge deal back then). We are sitting watching him 40ish years later. A decade longer than the 30 year difference from the 50s to the 80s. Maybe people judged him then but what are they remembered for? Someone said in the comments that the little boy is embarrassed now by the video - fair and valid if that's how he feels but if it was me, I could never be embarrassed of this. John reached the Zenith: To experience life in whichever way makes him happy without any influence from the herd. Shout out to all the Johns of the world.

Small point but "teddy boys" where around before rock-'n'-roll arrived on our shores. Although both will still be remembered long after the last "ted" hangs up his draped jacket for the final time.

    • @adrinathegreat3095
      @adrinathegreat3095 Před rokem +1

Yea that's true, they showed up around 1951 and use to listen to big band music as that was what was popular in England back then.
Very different style to what the 70s colourful Ted's were, back then you'd have been chased down the street for dressing up like a member of showaddywaddy or rocky Sharpe and the replays.

Strange interview, I’m guessing it comes from the early 80s, inferring this guy was a bit of a freak but in the early 80s there was a thriving Ted and Rockabilly community around East and North London. Although I never saw anyone in a drape jacket quite so lairy. Pubs like the Old Maypole in Hainault were packed out every weekend with everyone in 50s gear and they had live bands like Flying saucers, matchbox and Crazy Cavan. There was also the Green Gate in Barkingside, and the Angel in Tottenham that had Rock n Roll nights. I remember one of the DJs was called Rebel Ed, and I seem to remember the guy before him at the Maypole was Jim? There was also a shop in Romford selling Ted clothing and shoes. I myself was a young guy around this time only 18 or 19 and was both a Ted and later a Rockabilly, and had a brilliant time. I used to go to a shop called Flip around Liverpool Street to buy genuine 50s American clothing. Of course there was also many more Mods, Rude Boys, Skin Heads and Soul Boys out there as well which frequently led to confrontations out on the street, and around Romford market for example. Youth culture now has nothing to compare. Going into the Maypole on a Satruday night was like stepping back in time, and you got a sense of belonging. Great music and great times.

People have different passions, be it football, cars, motorbikes or whatever, it’s not harming anyone, they’re just enjoying the music, the clothes etc. Even if young Graham has hung up his drape and spread his wings by now, I hope the family are happy and well.

I bet they cut a few Punks faces off in the late 70s! What a cool little kid!
I knew a family like that in the 70s , the Dad was a pure life long Ted , they had a massive framed portrait of the young Elvis on the wall, my friend and his brothers all had bootlace ties and always had their hair quiffed. I used to love going round there cos they were all nice and a right laugh, but then I started to become interested in Punk and at the time I didnt know about thé rivalry between the Teds and the Punks. When i told them that I liked the Sex Pistols and The Stranglers, they seemed shocked and i didnt understand why. They were very dissapointed.
My friend stopped hanging around with me and i was never invited round again.
The Mother and the sister dressed like it was still the 50s too, by the way. Goin round their house really was like going back in time.
And I still fuckin love The Stranglers 😎

Groovin' to an earlier musical genre. Very cool....nothing wrong with it. Europe has an appreciation for older American music that America itself has turned it's back on. They even have Boogie-Woogie shows and dance contests which are a lot of fun to watch. While these folks are jitterbugging kids in the US are out
committing carjackings and murders and all manner of criminal activity.
So I say....bop till ya drop.....ya aren't hurting anyone and are having fun.

Anyone else think we're currently in a "stalled century"?
I mean that things "progressed" pretty quickly, from say 1900 to the late 90s... But ever since the year 2000, nothing much has gotten any different.
In fact, we're still "consuming" sh*t that was exactly the same in the mid 1980s... Only today, the stuff seems much crappier and homogeneous.
On a happier note... Gotta love the Teds!
I'm a Second Generation Rockabilly myself... And at 55, I have no intention of changing.
I got my education from my dad and uncles, they kept grease in their hair since the Fifties... And when I was in High School, guys like the Robert Gordon and the Stray Cats got pretty popular.... I guess I was hooked then.
The best part of it is that even though the things that interest me are pushing 70 to 80 years old, there's still a sh*t ton of stuff I haven't discovered in over 40 years of being an Aficionado.
Either way, always do whatever you're going to do TO THE FULLEST... Don't half-ass anything.
    Cheers

You used to see a few Teds still wandering about in the 80’s, they always looked really old and out of time even then. Plus I could never figure out why they wore their hair very long - their quiffs always looked a right mess, not like the short neat ones the original rock n rollers used to wear. Not many of those haircuts walking around nowadays, and they’re all pensioners.
