This video clip is from a 1980 Wings rehearsal in the kitchen of Paul's old farmhouse on his Peasmarsh Estate in East Sussex. The same place where he began sessions for McCartney II the previous summer. The clip is from a Japanese television program of unknown origin and contains:
message to people of Japan
Eleanor Rigby
Got To Get You Into My Life (faster version)
With A Little Luck
Coming Up
Got To Get You Into My Life (normal version)
Got To Get You Into My Life (another faster version)
The audio is available on several bootlegs in varying quality including Eggs Up (Masterfraction), On A Rainy Day (No Label Records), Japan Rehearsals (Golden Walrus) and Ranachan Rehearsals (Masterfraction). - Hudba
In an alternate universe, this fantastic Wings lineup tours Japan and later North America with great success. Including a full band live performance on Saturday Night Live in May 1980. And nothing important happens in December 1980. Oh I wish it were so!
It would be sad that McCartney II wouldn't exist but I'd trade that for John any day
You said it beautifully! And the Beatles would have probably played together again in the early 80s I bet! I wish there was a way to magically make it happen! My heart is still broken about everything!
And John joins the band onstage in 1981.
Except that it would be Billy Shepherd with John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr on stage. Not Paul since he died 14 years earlier
How cool would it be to rehearse songs that are all monster hits, and you're the guy that wrote them. Remarkable!
Billy didn't write Eleanor Rigby and Got To Get You Into My Life
That bass in Coming Up is absolutely thunderous!
Same DEEP BASS Sound on "Silly Love Songs" etc......🕶
@@Slamit88Yep, also GOODNIGHT TONIGHT and I absolutely love it!
Just fuckin imagine hanging around Paul as he's just walking around with a guitar singing the Beatles songs HE wrote. Baadassss.

People have no idea how good these musicians are here!!!!!
Other musicians are Wings lineup from '79: Paul, Linda, Denny Laine & Laurence Juber on guitars and Steve Holley on drums.
I love how many times he messed up the lyrics to Eleanor Rigby there in the beginning! They're so goofy and casual, like teens practicing for their garage band. This is great -- thanks for sharing it :D
rehearsing the Beatles tunes in a room the size of a closet.. in a matter of days or weeks he's figuring to take the whole show to Japan and appear in stadiums and arenas. I remember I was 12 at the time.. listening to Paperback Writer on the 13th anniversary of its original recording and buying Back to the Egg the day it was released in June 1979!
Wait, if they played With A Little Luck, then that must mean if Paul hadn't gotten arrested, we might've heard a live version of the song!
This is Wings 1979 rehearsals for the UK tour later that year. The set list included Coming Up, although it wasn't released until 1980. Rehersals later progressed at Eastbourne Hippodrome
Great footage. Why wouldn't anyone want this band playing at their function. Gee just think at this time John was still alive. You think about all the other things going on at the time.
The fact that we could had a “With a Little Luck” live version if it was t for the ambush in Japan.
@Mermelada de Tomate If only he never phoned the Dakota.
Ambush...MFer broke their laws. The band paid for his stupidity.
Besides dancing, he also plays & sings & writes a little bit too...
I love the version of coming up...he sings the chorus like the studio version...hi pitched rather than like the live single he released
just heard Larry Juber guesting on the local Breakfast with the Beatles on WXAQ 104.3? in New York City in November of December of 2011 and talking about his time with wings and playing some Beatles instrumentals and talking about Beatles guitar.. really good player.. this version of Wings could have made some good albums... a FEW anyway to usher in the 80s.. wonder what would have happened in the 12 - 18 months after this period had Lennon lived.
I agree, I'm not against marijuana use for creativity purposes at all. I think it helped blossom McCartney's career and songwriting abilities. Some of the world's greatest songs have been crafted while under the influence of marijuana.
a few have been done without drugs as well
Carrying Mary Jane into a foreign country illegally is never a good idea.
So this was the rehearsal for the tour that never was? And what a shame that the two new guys at the time never really got the attention the deserved.
exactly. Imagine if they had been part of a Wings Over America 2.
Saw this line up Liverpool, 1979 Royal Court twice, have a bootleg LP of one.
Loved all Wings line up but the one I saw in Liverpool Empire 75 was awesome.
Man those Yamaha bass`s sound amazing!
Yeah! This Yamaha & his Rickenbacker were my fav bass tones on his records. The Hofner is outstanding for certain things....but most of his stand out bass parts were either done on his Ric or Yamaha. "Silly Love Songs," "Coming Up," "Goodnight Tonight," etc. He changes guitars throughout his live shows. I wonder why he doesn't change basses (?) In my opinion, The Hofner doesn't cut it on the songs he used his Ric or Yamaha on. Like the Hofner, those basses have very dinstinctive tones
The Ric is too heavy. Paul is now 74 and having that thing hanging around his neck and shoulders for 2-3 hrs at a show is too much. The Hofner weighs nothing....
This is true!
His only delve into round wound bass strings too.
I don't know what's more tantalizing, the ska version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" (which is a really good indicator of what Wings was turning into post-Egg) or "Video Killed the Radio Star" at about 11:45.
God I need a tab for that version of Got to Get You Into my Life please. I love this version so much
guess it's late for McCartney to be revisiting the Wings or solo eras with his current band. He's leaving a LOT of interesting material on the floor though.. with the reissues of McCartney and Ram and TONS of unreleased stuff...
God I love that Got to Get you Into my Life, I love the "oooooo" and then the music accompanying it is so beautiful. Did he ever do a version of the song like that live?
Many.
Thanks for sharing this. I've never seen this entire rehearsal!🙂👍
That transition at 2:41
"❤ BEAUTIFUL".
that little run paul does at 9:13 is pretty awesome
Got To Get You Into My Life (faster version)!!!
初めて聞いた!
Speechless
Es uno de los primeros temas de Wings que escuché.
can it get any better? ... thanks for uploading!!!!
Strange, the video is a bit out-of-sequence. In "Got To Get You Into My Life", the drummer is clearly behind Paul and in front of the window where you can see that it is dark outside. Yet during the drum fills, one of which occurs at 9:35, not only is it daylight behind the drums, it's Paul playing them! Good editing job for an informal rehearsal session.
SUPER SIR PAUL JAMES, MY 💘 LOVE.
please Paul play With a Little Luck live!!!
11:00 Ooooo, he dances!
Once Jimmy Mc quit wings was never the same.
they really didn't get much of a chance...one album, one UK tour, then it was over.
Laurence Juber was (is) a VERY good guitarist and his personality meshed well with Paul’s. I think more than anything Paul was approaching 40 and was just getting a bit bored having a band. He recorded the “freak” version of Coming Up in summer ‘79 and it think that gave him a big creative yearning to move on and do his own weird music (McCartney II is one of my absolute favorites!) and I’m sure Linda, who was also approaching 40, wanted to focus on their new toddler James.
11:45 Paul sings The Buggles
Cenas raras !
Hehe...great little party band...I think they passed the audition :-)
Good grief, Paul looks fine even though this isn't always the best video. No wonder he got labeled "the cute Beatle."
He’s still a cute old man ❤
It's a shame the Japanese tour didn't happen...Wings had planned a different setilist and rehearsed songs like ELEANOR RIGBY, WITH A LITTLE LUCK (as seen in this video), BABY'S REQUEST and ANOTHER DAY.

Luca love your book! Must have for all Beatles/Wings/Paul fans!
great book Luca!
"With A Little Luck"
Suprised.. You would think Paul could have used a SP tape that had not been previously erased and recorded over...
last night I watched the Beatles live in Munich Germany .. one of the better recorded and preserved perfomances ... if only the Beatles had the time or inclination to have gathered in a rehearsal room and worked on their live act and done Got to Get You.. Eleanor Rigby.. And Your Bird .. Rain.. Taxman.. oh well what might have been... maybe they'd have picked up some nifty Yamaha guitars when they went to Japan that year.. Paul sounded great with that bass!
Coming up just as good as the live at Glasgow billboard usa number 1 hit
"That's right...people of Japan" - LOL!!
Denny Laine departed from Wings around this time, because of the drug bust that happened in Japan. The end of Wings, as we knew it.
although he hung around long enough to play on parts of Tug of War and Pipes of Peace.
When Paul will play With a little luck LIVE?
Well, that's a given! haha :)
People that shit on this video i have one word, BILLIONAIRE.
Billy "shears" shepherd is a really good musician
🐱
what is the song at 4:30?
With A Little Luck
FIRST TIME PAUL EVER SAID WRONG WORDS TO VERSES. JT FROM MEX
Too bad Paul didn't do some colaberating with Lennon in 1980.
nice spelling
Pre 5 day Japanese holiday stint…….
linda smoking grass on film..rarely seen. she seems to behave somehow strangely. denny and paul look at her if she is still feeling right. can someone confirm what I see on this video?
roberta mitchum I can see what you mean.
+richarda widmark - they probably just wanted her to pass it to them and not smoke it all herself.
no
It’s not grass, it’s just a cig
@@lanac9734 that's what I thought but I didn't know she smoked?
Was it before the Japan tour?
@Brian Lam ok;it's very pity that With a Little Luck wasn't played live.
@Brian Lam yes,unfortunately
What are you blabbering about?
who are the other musicians? anybody know?
sad that some people still don't know. Paul McCartney - bass, guitar, vocals. Denny Laine - guitar, keyboards, vocals. Linda McCartney - keyboards, vocals. Laurence Juber - guitar. Steve Holley - drums.
Ever tried to use Wikipedia?
@@sevchyk if they're Wings fans, they should already know the names of the musicians. it's not like they're some unknown group.
@@ronfowlermusic Not everybody here is a Wings' fan, take that into account.
With a little Luck - live don´t work (but a great Studio-Track)
Why do you think so?
I assume it’s right before Lennon was murdered.
He certainly didn't get the words right to Eleanor Rigby.
From personal experience, I have found that "stoned musicians" can still sound better and play better than amateurs trying to sound like Pro's, even after (amateurs) drinking one beer. I guess my point is, we should all be locked up, for doing what we want to in our own house....
Why should we be locked up in our house?
Looks like they're rehearsing in someone's living room.
yep.... McCartney's digs weren't exactly a Hollywood mansion. He of course had home studios that would have been a better fit.. but I bet he chose to just go to a normal room because in the Beatles they never went anywhere to just rehearse. So I'm guessing McCartney is taking his globe hopping band into just an ordinary room and drilling them on the songs over and over just for the sake of being able to say that basic rehearsals occurred in the humblest space possible. No distractions just like a garage band.
@@LBrilliante the video states it was in the kitchen of his Peasmarsh home.
@@theresaakins2317 Thanks for the heads up. At the time I didn't even KNOW about Peasmarsh being the true McCartney family home. I always thought he lived in Scotland or in London. But yes Peasmarsh is where all that activity was happening .. especially serving as the background of the "Wonderful Christmastime" video.
Sad that he got his ass arrested for possession of Mary Jane and effed things up for his band members.
DID HE JUST WHISTLE AT LINDA HSAKVDJAVSJAHS
I didn't know Linda smoked. I'm glad I quit. All the guys I thought were cool at family weddings with their cigs, which started me off when I was a teen, have been stubbed out before their time. Sorry, that drag at the beginning was a distraction to me - A bit like a blast from the past. Good musical footage to be sure
Mick Lans. Linda smoking to drugs she was vegan lolol
if it makes you feel better, that's a joint she's smoking, not tobacco LOL
I could be wrong, but I get the general feeling, Paul is bored in this video, like bored with the whole Wings thing, I mean they fizzled out not long after this right? It's just a feeling.....don't shoot me.
I've watched a few videos of Wings rehearsing throughout the 70s and the other members always look miserable and there's not much interaction between them. Almost like they're petrified to take the limelight away from Macca. It looked more like they were hired guns, masquerading as a band, than a real group. Clearly McCartney was in charge and the rest followed his orders.
Simon Perry Uh, Denny Laine was part of that, too.
I agree with you...He had a different line-up every year, they probably couldn't take playing with him...He's still the best though.
i would guess that much reheaarsing would become boring?
@@simonperry8569 you are on the mark with your observations. The band members were treated and paid like session musicians and Paul admitted as such. But Wings was a band, not anything else. Later on, in the 90s Paul got on board and was upfront that the other musicians were just hired help.
how can you forget your own song lyrics haha
hmmm.... try remembering something you did 14 years ago and you might have some recall problems yourself. Besides the main goal here is to get the whole band used to playing it. Going over lyrics can be done as it gets closer to tour time.
Angel Iván N I've been listening to these songs for decades now and I still tend to forget some lyrics. There are so many songs and sometimes the beat of one sounds like the beat of another and I inadvertently switch songs, that becomes a habit and before long I forget how the rest of a song goes. Paul is a great song writer and has plenty of lyrics in his head, I'm sure he suffers from similar occurrences now and then.
Angel Iván N All musicians mess up, look at 2:46 the guitarist and Paul himself cock up, it happens :)
It's not his song, that's why. Eleanor Rigby was written by the original Paul, not Billy the replacement here.
@@OldSchoolVibes1978 lmao you're really THAT dumb
Shame about quality
Why does Linda and Denny look guilty for something?
not guilty, for looking like a freak, making friends with every sikh
I'm blabbering about something you know nothing about..it's called music.
Rehearsing for Japan.... Haha.... waste of time Paul....
And they're stoned.. :)
How stoned are they????? VERY!!!! hehe!!
They're all stoned lol
Paul did way more than that just make music.
Go to truthcontest(.)com and read "The Present", the section on the Beatles starts on page 59.
When I talk about Wings as a band, I mean their partnership, not friendship. Paul allowed them to express themselves in the interests of their own project. But in the late 70s, he decided to start a solo career again, invented a scandal in Japan to increase sales of the failed Back To The Egg, deprived the band of the opportunity to tour and earn good money. A similar picture was in 1969, when Paul decided to leave. In both cases, he was not worried about the further fate of the partners. And now he goes to interviews and claims that he wrote Michelle alone, that the melody of In My Life belongs to him and that he wrote Strawberry Fields with John. Probably because the level of Wings songs is not up to the level of the Beatles.
Everything you said is wrong. I’m only commenting so that anybody who reads doesn’t take your distorted views as facts
@@ewest14 Thanks for watching and bye for now.
...So I suppose the is William Campbell or Maxwell or Faul McCartney?
Yeah. Mhm. Paul died. Bc he didnt wear shoes when they took the abbey road pic
This is Sir Paul Fucking McCartney and you better shut the fuck up.
Old
The faker pretends he wrote Eleanor Rigby, songs every lyric wrong
let me play JOHN LENNON , rather than this paul....,
