The Onedin Line is a BBC television drama series which ran from 1971 to 1980. The series was created by Cyril Abraham. The series is set in Liverpool from 1860 to 1886 and deals with the rise of a shipping line, the Onedin Line, named after its owner James Onedin.
Around this it depicts the lives of his family, most notably his brother and partner Robert, a shop-owner, and his sister Elizabeth, giving insight into the lifestyle and customs at the time, not only at sea, but also ashore (mostly lower- and upper-middle-class).
The series also illustrates some of the changes in business and shipping, such as from wooden to steel ships and from sailing ships to steam ships. It shows the role that ships played in such matters as international politics, uprisings and the slave trade. Additionally the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal is mentioned during one series.
James Onedin (Peter Gilmore), the younger son of Samuel Onedin, a miserly ship chandler who left his money to eldest son Robert. He was a penniless sea captain with aspirations to greater things and in order to become a ship-owner, he married Anne Webster, who was some years his senior. She was the spinster daughter of Captain Joshua Webster (James Hayter), owner of the topsail schooner Charlotte Rhodes. At first it was purely a business transaction on Onedin's part; but a warmer relationship gradually developed.
On her death at the end of the second series James had come to love her. James considered two possible replacement brides: wealthy widow Caroline Maudslay and the young heiress Leonora Biddulph (Kate Nelligan), before settling for his daughter's governess, Letty Gaunt (Jill Gascoine).
The music behind the opening credits of the series is an excerpt from the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from the ballet Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian.
Will be playing this at my dads funeral on the 2nd of Aug. My dad loved the sea. He died of lung cancer on the 8th of July 2021 in hospital. May God rest his soul, from the seas of life. Amen.

So, sorry to hear this Lorna. The cycle of life is hard for all us. But l believe there is more to life than many may think. There is a designer, or God. If one looks at the complex nature of how our body works internally. Take cortisol for instance. There is no way this vital harmone could have accidentally evolved. It is inconceivable that a superior mind, or being did not create this life saving harmone. Without it the human race would not have survived.
I am going through a tough time at present. I am 67, and recently had a cancer scare. And spent 10 weeks in hospital. I am still not fully recovered. So take heart - we are not alone.
Back to the great " Onedin Line." It was very popular in Ireland. I am Irish, and l can tell you that Irish people were glued to there TV sets minus the remote control. Lol. Peter Gilmore was a fine actor, and as you know was in many of the " Carry On," movies. The series and cast will never be forgotten. And the haunting theme by Katchaturian was so appropriate. Take care. Life is precious.

I remember as a very small child this music always made me really emotional. I just listened to it again after many years and it made me cry.
Yes, I do too, I was only very small when this was on television. It evoked a feeling of home and feeling secure. I was very lucky.

I was 4 years old by that time but this music was in my ears and my mind for decades. Finally after all this time I found the movie and the soundtrack . I found inside of me a mix of emotions : joy of remembering this and sad of the times passed by !
I watched this series as a young kid (~7YO) almost 50 years ago... and it still sends shivers down my spine. It was then broadcast in black-and-white, and much that I know on Britains rule of the seas came from this series. The strange thing I learned 4 decades afterwards is that the theme (Khachaturians' Spartacus - here directed by the composer with the Vienna philharmonic orchestra) has absolutely nothing to do with either Britain or the Sea --- yet in my mind it will remain connected forever. Genius of selecting the theme... I think not too many knew the music before the Onedin line series too...
Is it really him conducting the VPO? I do think the interpretation is fantastic - I was assuming it was the LPO having a particularly good day after too much to drink. At any rate, it sounds way way above anything average, even above normal BPO.

Watched this at the time with my dad, we both loved it (and occasionally mum!). Dad was a keen sailor and in the immediate post-war era in UK skippered an old Pilot ketch smuggling contraband from France to the UK - it had a double bottom, he and his crew were never caught. He emigrated to Tasmania in 1949, subsequently meeting my mum, also a £10 pound pom in Hobart in 1950.
In the early 1970s I recall visiting the then decrepit hulk of the 'Polly Woodside' barque in Melbourne with dad before her great restoration, even in her sad state, there was a magic about her. Dad continued to sail throughout his life at any opportunity with a few boats passing through his ownership. Fond memories.

Me too. I watched all 91 episodes for the second time. There is a pilot episode too, from 1970. It still exists somewhere.

Same age as me, then. I remember the music and have played this at the amateur orchestra (second violin) when an adult in the early 90s!
My father loved the Onedin line. He was a pilot in the RAF. He spent a lot of his youth in Scarborough and said that if he hadn't been a pilot he'd have been a sailor.
My Dad died at the age of 53, suddenly on Thursday 25th August 1978.
On the Sunday the Onedin Line was playing on BBC1. I sat on the stairs and cried my eyes out listening to this beautiful music. Strong, caring and beautiful, just like my Dad.

My late mum loved this. I was thinking of her and the music as I woke up this morning. A few minutes later I turned on the radio and it was playing. Goosebumps. xx
Back on NZ TV as of April 2021. I loved this series & still do. Drama, romance. Not as some of us would prefer it. But what a love & bonding that grew. So beautiful.
If that intro music doesn't get goosebumps every time. Perfect musically representation of a sail unfurling, filling with the wind and the ship going up and down with that horn signalling the rythym. That is my take anyway.
It's actually a representation of the love between two proletarian slaves rebelling against their Roman masters, but never mind... That Khachaturian, eh?

Yet the composer never intended this... pure genius of the series makers, and perfect attachment. The goosebumps are there even after 50 years, when I saw the series first on TV in Israel....
This is it! There are many version of Aram Katchaturian's Adagio on you tube, but none other plays it so softly and lovely as this orchestra. Thank you for putting it on you tube. This tune is engraved into my soul
1971 was a good year for fantastic music like this. Walkabout came out the same year which was made even more memorable by John Barry's brilliant score.

😉 My dad used to watch this all the time too mate. He was a safety inspector for Thames Water and he said he loved to cycle around their huge water treatment works whistling this tune.
I wish they would digitise this program its been made so well in the 1970s and is educational of days past
I am currently watch the re-run again on tv, one of the greatest series made for TV by the BBC in their hey day.
My parents used to watch The Onedin Line, I hated the show but loved the music over the credits!
i hated it back in the day.. being young, it felt boring, however i love it now.
The Onedin Line and Blake's 7 are the probably the most memorable and best ever BBC tv themes.
I didn't like the Blake's 7 theme, either in childhood or adulthood, because of the horrible and frightening ending!
This is from the Ballet Spartacus and was the originally called Adgio Of Spartacus and Phrygia. The Ballet is full of great music. Wonderful theme.

We played this at my grandfathers funeral yesterday. My grandfather worked on big container ships and went allmost all over the world. He was 13 days short of celebrating his 91st birthday. He will forever be missed and looking at footage like this brings me close to him

This is on in the mornings UK Freeview Talking Pictures Channel. I'm far too young to have watched the original showing of it, but I love it nonetheless. Particularly because John Thaw is in certain episodes but mostly because I love this theme song.

I remember the dread and fear I used to get on a Sunday evening as a kid when I heard the opening theme of this. I knew I was in for an hour of unrelenting and mind numbing boredom.

I used to spend a lot of time in Devon in 1970s and probably saw them filming at Dartmouth I was in my teens 1971-78.
