  • The small town of Uniondale in the Little Karoo was formed in 1856. The church in this beautiful town was built in 1886 and overlooks the entire town. When you stand in front of this church you can feel the sense of grandeur with its sandstone structure. What an architectural masterpiece! From the church we went looking for the British fort on the outskirts of town. It was amazing to see this structure, still standing today and to just imagine what happened there over 100 years ago. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #uniondale #britishfort

    Another brilliant video, you should have driven at night and maybe seen the Uniondale Ghost 😄 👻

      What can I say? Fortunately our channel doesn't really feature driving at night and this time I was actually quite happy about that. Not sure I'd like to meet the Uniondale Ghost in person.😮🤣👻

      A totally unexpected visit to the town because we ran out of supplies. And we were so happy we did!

      I also found the church particularly beautiful. And so apt that it's directly across the street from the correctional facility in town. 😊⛪

    Tussen Orania en Hopetown is daar 'n fort wat lyk asof dit gister gebou is so goed behoue het dit gebly. Dit is wel op privaat grond en seker hoekom dit nog so goed lyk.

    The only thing I knew about Uniondale before this video was the mythical ghost mentioned in Anton Goosen's song. There's also a good 2014 movie about it, Die Spook van Uniondale. If you haven't seen it, it's well worth watching!

    The town was established in 1856. The first owner way back in 1765 was b1 Matthys Zondag, b 1738 married to Dirkje Knoetzen. Matthys was related to my by his mother Aletta Olivier, b 1695 from Tulbagh

      Thank you for the info, how interesting that you're related to the owner of the original farm! 👌

    The steeple on the church was rebuilt because the heavy bell caused the original to fail. Also you missed a trick while viewing the Fort. One of the other forts was on the same koppie but on the other edge facing the poort you came through. There were 5 forts originally, and of course they were British. Uniondale is in the old Cape Colony which was one of the territories the Boers were at war with.

      The fort was amazing! 👍 I'm never too fussed about anything we 'missed' in a place, it's impossible to see it all! 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Maybe it would be nice to live in Uniondale?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Před rokem +1

      I"m sure it could, provided you're the type of person who can do without the conveniences of a big centre. They have to make quite the trek if they're after speciality items and such. Quality of life is awesome there I'm sure and, as with everything in life, there are tradeoffs. The best way to know for sure, is to pay the town a longish visit and feel the vibe as Sonia would say! 😁🚗

    I dont think this ghost has been seen lately. Perhaps she has gone to her rest. The fort...now that is haunted...sjoe!!!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Před rokem +2

      I wouldn't know. All I know, is that I'm grateful that I haven't seen her. 😨 May she rest in eternal peace.

      Thank you for taking the time out of your day to point out everything we missed in Uniondale, we appreciate that so much. 🙂 Not sure why you felt the need to complete your comment in CAPS though, I heard you loud and clear from.the start 🤷🏼‍♂️ You must be new to our channel, so I'll point out a few things to you. In the beginning of our channel, we didn't do in-depth exploration of a town like we do in more recent videos. Our channel was about the back and gravel roads to and between towns and not so much about the towns as such. This has evolved somewhat since our visit to Uiondale. It is still not and will never be our intention to include every single place of interest in any specific place or town since it's simply impossible to do so. Instead, we choose to focus on what we do manage to see and not at all on what we missed. These videos are our memories of what we saw and we choose to share them with those who enjoy them. It's really as simple as that.
