  • A review and retrospective for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 20 years later. I cover the topics of skill issues, I give an analysis of the core design philosophy of action games and explain why Ninja Gaiden is still one of the best games ever made. I got the platinum on Ninja Gaiden and I learned a lesson from the sadistic developers to never give up. I'm Team Ninja and I'm team action games.
P.S. A parry is a part of the ballet of combat, rather than a contrived rehearsal of one element of the dance.

Nice work, First Place. Reminds me of getting SS Rank on Devil May Cry 3 across the entire board.

Thanks. And congrats on getting the SS ranks. DMC3 is one of the toughest games to rank.

Devil may cry doesn’t compare completely different dimension. I’m not proficient on the sigma version for part 1 but I believe that it doesn’t count since it is easier than black. I know that part 2 was a joke for the sigma version. I liked part 2 better because the combat felt like I had the ability to fight in it the way I wanted part 1 was basically just 1 way to do it even though it is technically a better game world

Not a completely different dimension but certainly an alteration in philosophy. They can all be compared on a technical level and that is a good thing. When I look at something like God of War, the most mainstream in the genre, that's the one that isn't like the others.
There are certain strengths to each DMC, Bayo and NG. Kind of all depends on how you want to play them. Like you say, even the difference between NG1 and NG2 is big. Everyone will have their favorite individual game, but it's the genre that matters, and those are the big 3 that are the most important always.

Did you play black and original ninja gaiden 2 as well? They're relentless and even more challenging than the sigma releases. I think you'd love to cut your teeth on their relentless difficulty.

    • @FirstPlace97
      @FirstPlace97  Před 2 měsíci

Na. This is my first time playing any of the NG games. It's a shame there are so many releases, as they can skew the experience depending on the circumstances. I will get around to the others but I only have the Sigma versions for now.

@FirstPlace97 It's cool, the sigma games are still peak in terms of action games. The original ninja gaidens are just in a league of their own. Most complaints about sigma 2 stem from censoring blood and gore and reduced enemy counts. It's still the same levels and story beats and even the same weapons. So if sigma is all you have available you're still getting incredible actiong game experiences. Ninja gaiden 3 razors edge is a different beast though.
Launch ninja gaiden 3 was a mess and Razors edge attempted to fix all it could. However a lot of qte sequences and walking sections were left in. The bosses also are more hit and miss. The moment to moment combat is superb though satisfyingly tough and gory. I think you'll enjoy the gameplay. Hope you play the rest of the trilogy.
Also the word as to why we didn't get ninja gaiden black and og 2 in the collection is because they lost the source code. Which is a shame, a lot of Japanese dev studios seem to lose source code for games frequently.

@@chozochiefxiii3298 Yeah. I'm hoping Sigma 2 improves slightly on some of the minor complaints I have with the first NG, like the camera which is a bit flimsy. I've heard many people that prefer NG04 but also NG2 has a lot of fans, so I am looking forward to it when I can find the time.
Will definitely try out Razor's Edge one day, too. Fumihiko Yasuda directed it and he's the guy that made Nioh, which I love, so I'll have a lot to say about it when the time comes.
Also, sad about the source codes. We need to preserve those.

@FirstPlace97 Sigma goes for more arcade like linear approach so save points double as heals, you gain some health back by default after every encounter, weapons don't have to be switched via menu, flying swallow activates everytime. Just some quality of life stuff. It does make weird changes like only allowing like 1 free weapon upgrade per chapter.
Unlike ninja gaiden 2 which let's you basically upgrade as long as you have essence. Uts charge way faster. They cut down on the amount of enemies on screen that ninja gaiden 2 had in exchange for raising enemy hp.
Obliteration techniques add a new layer of violent spectacle and strategy to combat as certain attacks in combos and weapons have higher chances of de limbing. Enemies also become more violent when delimbed, turning into suicide bombers.
The bosses are more hit and miss than the original and sigma. You get two more ladies to play as besides Rachel and Rachel even gets a buff to her moveset.
Itagaki was nuts with og ninja gaiden 2. He'd have the team put so many enemies on screen it would lag the 360. Enemy bodies would stick around too. His solution was to add more enemies too....mad lad. Also the hilarious bs in the game increased.
At least in the original. Bosses that explode and can kill you after you've beat them if you're not ready for them. Lava land mines. Rocket spam on higher difficulties. I'm not entirely sure how much sigma 2 toned this down as I'm only on chapter 10 of sigma 2. Either way I'm curious to see what you think when you inevitably become a master ninja in 2 and sigma 2.
Oh I believe another change from og 2 in sigma 2 is you have izuna drop from the start even if the game doesn't tell you. I think you'll like the new weapons that og 2 introduced that carried over to sigma, falcons talons, Kuasri gama, eclipse scythe. On top of returning weapons.

@@siusun2001 Best way that I got it was to use a move called copperhead swing or something for Rachel. Basically lets you reduce time on the downward thrust. Have seen other people use it in combo with wall attack and that's how I did it.

I mean the game is not hard. Its just thr enemy had too much health and i got really tired of spamming the same move over and over. It got really boring that i just gave up. The spamming over and over got really boring.

There's always going to be some spam in these games. UT spam is huge part of the meta, but there's so much variety in everything else you can do that makes up for it. NG is really kill or be killed. You can die very quickly but with the right RNG and strats you can also melt.
