- It is not just an adaptation, but an adaptation to contemporary realities. In 1953 Arthur C. Clarke depicted what is happening in society now. And looking at the changes brought about by the aliens, one comes to realize that humanity must change, and the time for that is now.

The Book by Aurthur C. Clarke was awesome, so hopefully the movie is close to as awesome!
Childhoods end is a smashing read!
Going by what appears to be a very cryptic message of the film, is that Childhood’s End as in the theme of the Iron Maiden song of the same name, from the Fear of the Dark album, because if so, I can very much agree with that message.
One of the things about the book that was especially interesting is the Korelian, and the "Overlords" were not evil. Despite being the very vision of the Devil, they were, in fact, slaves to the Overmind. Korelian, and others o his race, had to obey the Overmind in order to preserve their planet and species. If Korelian did not obey, both he and this race would be destroyed. Korelian actually liked humans, and grieved that he was the tool that was used to bring about the destruction of the planet and of humanity. Korelian appreciated and grieved the loss of humanity, and of all the other races that the Overmind had destroyed. He grieved for the loss of their essence and potential. He questioned himself whether the survival of his race was worth being the tools who were used to help destroy intelligent species the galaxy over. But in the end all he can do is to leave that single piece of music in the forever dark and empty place where the solar system had been, to act as humanity's tombstone.
This is what they do. They observe teach and finally reveal and destroy. The overmind is a hive like collective that aggregates the knowledge of many worlds.
Honestly, the best recap of this series I've seen all over CZcams. All other channels have made is so confusing. You guys did it really good.
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate it :)
And you are our best fan ;)
Helps to have read the book, but I agree, this was really well done.
"... really well."
Except the movie title is never in the description. The movie title and year it was released ALWAYS NEEDS TO BE IN THE DESCRIPTION!!!!

WOOOOW.....didn't know this story was adapted for a series. I' ve read this book four times. The end is simultaneously shocking and good. Amazing work of Arthur Clarke
I read it, too. Had no idea of where it was going in the end.
Yes, it originally aired on Syfy as a 3 part episodic mini-series. I was absolutely glued in for each of the episodes. I liked it so much I bought them all on Vudu.
0fine clip read the book the clip followed it to a T
they did a wonderful job with the series
It was only a 3 episode series….
Based on the book Childhood's End, by Arthur C. Clarke, written in 1953! A great short read that is well worth it and highly recommended. Loved that the summary ended with that recommendation.
Aliens have only two rules for humanity:
No more war.
No cruelty to animals.
The Overlords (demons) for some unknown reason cannot become part of the Overmind. But they have been given the task to help other species make the change as gently as possible.
Read the book of revelation, it is essentially what this film is about, or series.
@@tommargarites2811 But then you realise that A C Clarke was an atheist... Nice try. :D
He's right. This is an new take on the story of the antichrist. Atheist or not. It's what it is.
@@nickshevlin4063 Just because he was (if he was), doesn't mean he can't use the story in the book of revelation as a foundation for his own story. Nice try.
Never seen this, or even knew it existed. Thank you for your video. It's a fascinating story😊
This looks absolutely brilliant. Great recap. Also. Carelan seems like a fairly good dude! Surprisingly.
It's a great series. And yes, Karellin is an ok guy. Played by Charles Dance (Tywin in Game of Thrones).
The theme of this book and series are profoundly unsettling. The idea that all we ever were could simply end with humanity not even serving as a footnote, let alone out individual lives and loved ones, would be devastating. I could imagine the world devolving into something like seen in Children of Men without future generations to come along as hopelessness sweeps the species.
Nobody likes to think we may be so utterly meaningless but liking has nothing to do with it.
In the book the appearance of the Overlords wasn't connected to earlier visits but to humanity's latent and undeveloped psychic potential which would only be fully realized when the children evolved to the next level. The idea of humanity's end connected to such demonic appearing creatures reverberated back through human unconsciousness and materialized in countless religions and art works. We were essentially preprogrammed to recognize the Overlords as evil as they represented the end of humanity. Their time spent changing the earth before revealing themselves in the book was much longer if I remember properly. I thought it was several generations.
I read it many years ago and have always though it was a great book....but ive always hated it as well because basically humanity ends, sure humanity has ascended to join the galactic overmind but not as an individual entity because it is subsumed by the overmind...
Humanity doesn't advance it dies...
I don’t “like” to think it, it’s just a fact. The universe is too vast for human beings to be meaningful in anyway. You could say that life is meaningful, since it’s so rare. I’m sure there is other life out there in the cosmos, again, it’s just too big. The probability of at at least a few planets having life is higher than one might think.
But that doesn’t mean life “means” anything. Life is just a side effect of the universe, and of existence. Things that just so happen to be in the right place for other things to be created naturally.
That doesn’t mean I’m scared of death. Want to know why? Because I’ve already been through nonexistence, we all have, before we were born. All of us, prior to living, didn’t exist for a infinite amount of time. And idk about you, but I don’t remember any pain or agony. I don’t remember.. remembering. Because I didn’t exist. And all that infinite amount of time didn’t seem like anything, because I was nothing. So with that kind of mentality, you realize that death is nothing to be afraid of.
Honestly I really liked the adaptation. I liked most of the acting, but the aliens were well portrayed.
It's in the quran nothing new
Charles Dance plays the alien Karellin. He is an absolute legend. He played Tywin in Game of Thrones.
he pushed his father telekenetically and they take the boy to therapist . Mind blown.
🤣🤣🤣
I have the original paperback of Childhood's End and it's one of the many treasures in my library. I could get high money out of it from the looks on Ebay but keeping it. I just bought the Blu-Ray this past week and watched this movie adaption and loved it. I didn't think they could do it justice but...wow! The sad scenes had me teared up and learning the fate of mankind kept me on edge.
Awesome recap and well documented. Thank you so much for your work!
Really appreciate your support! Thank you so much Michael :)
See you in the next recap :)
i remember this book , i was a huge sci fi fan as a youngster and read this in the sixties , Clarke was a genius.
One detail the recap skipped, that was in the Childhood's End book, and think was an important point, was the 'overlords' were not evil and were in fact handicapped. Described as 'Baran Midwives', helping humanity raise to a higher evolutionary level, but incapable of achieving that themselves. While a version of humanity will live on the raised children, the overload's are an evolutionary dead end, unable to progress and can just watch others move on.
Children havent learned "humanity" yet and are still emotional creatures, thus "humanity" cant live on in them. At best "a few homo sapiens" live on, but not "humanity" ... which includes the STRUGGLE and the ACTIVE DECISION to "choose what is RIGHT over what is EASY".
Being a human doesnt even make you humanitarian ... and most people fail to understand what this requires.
@@Muck006 there wasnt anything easy about what little jennifer was doing at the end
This recap actually hit the heart strings
Thank you for bringing this story to my attention. I can’t wait to read the book. ACClarke was a genius ahead of his time
It really is!
@@TheRecapManiaOfficial very nice series. The guy was a genius who wrote this.
One of Arthur's best efforts. I would also love to see "Songs of Distant Earth" adapted this way.
That's a fantastic book. They should make a series out of it, and use the album The Songs Of Distant Earth by Mike Oldfield to accompany it. He read the book, and got inspired.
Wouldn't be much good for a star travelling civilization to have an alphabet based on constellations as they'd look different from different points in space and the most of the stars in them are nowhere near each other.
Wow this was interesting!! Great job !!
❤ The recap I have not even watched the series and yet I understand everything.
I've just started watching this. It's really good. Thanks for the heads up.
Glad you liked it! See you in the next recap :)
Amazing story. I have loved Arthur C. Clarke's books since I was a teenager.
Someone, please make a movie adaptation of Rendezvous With Rama. I'm still waiting.
Got the book from my Uncle when I was a kid. Great story. Well done series.
I don't know if it's sinister. All humans ascended to heaven. The devil looking aliens can't and are stuck in this plane of existence.
This was DEEP!!!
Intriguing, captivating, held my attention throughout, Enjoyed, 😊
So glad!
I remember watching this when it was on tv and it was an amazing mini-series and just rewatched it recently
Damn ,that was excellent! I've never even heard of this series
Watched it and loved it back then. Especially when the aliens first showed themselves. Quite a surprise. A true eye opener. 😊
We read this book in a high school class back in 1988. One of our assignments before we got to the reveal was to write a paper hypothesizing about the appearance of the Overlords and why they remained hidden. I still remember my hypothesis that the Overlords would simply be humans and the reason for the secrecy was all of humanity would never simply bow down and obey other humans. Only by conditioning humanity for generations to be docile could the Overlords reveal themselves and maintain control over earth's population. In the book the secrecy period lasted several generations I believe.
What's it called and where can I watch it
Childhood's End was one of the most depressing SF stories I've ever read.
Yes, its god was cruel and capricious, and knew no good other than its own desire to subsume all life. Was the childrens' evolution really into a god, or into ultimate evil? Clarke himself was -- ahem -- somewhat conflicted on this point iirc. Perhaps his subconscious was wiser than his conscious mind when he made the emissary look like a demon.
Something like this could actually be true. The universe is so big.
I read the book and loved it. I watched the series and loved it. Since I read the book I knew the little twist about the aliens in the middle. The thing is, I still didn't understand either of them that well.
Chief O'Brian is going to sort it out.
Wow, that was deep!!!❤
Thanks for explaining. I've watched this series twice and couldn't figure out what the hell it was about!
I'm a bit stumped how it wouldnt be understood. Humanity has feared and preached about angels and demons. So an advanced species arrives on earth knowing full well the majority of its problems and history to know that if they reveal themselves people will just panic and respond like wild animals. So they are coached, mentored and assisted with kindness to clean up the planet - which is based on a clean and safe alternative power source. With wars and disease a thing of the past, humanity can advance as a species...which always presents in offspring. Then the aliens reveal themselves after for their true appearance and its time for the children to take their rightful place in the stars.
Really?? 🤨 You watched this twice, and couldn't figure out the story?? Well okay...
Its a biblical prediction of the anti Christ and judgement day for earth
@@kenyatahill4056It's really not. Read the book.
@@kenyatahill4056 More accurately it is how unevolved human minds perceived psychically perceived the end of the species as they knew it and assigned that fear to the image which would be its harbinger, the Overlords. The Overmind, which many consider "God" is if anything the true antagonist here. The higher consciousness of the universe harvests species simply to propagate itself with zero care for the species themselves other than their need to survive to the evolution point. The Overlords, whom the book explains are unable to make that jump, have enormously long lifespans and are used by the Overmind to assist in the final elevation of the generation which shall move forward while all that came before is lost. It is actually the Overlords who have compassion for and feel sympathy for the species they are sent to oversee. They interfere with individuals on several occasions for individual human's benefits. They work to make the world a utopia to ease life for the final generations of the species.
In truth, if this story is that of the anti Christ and judgement day then God is definitively the bad guy. There is no judgement day, everyone but the last generation is destroyed with nothing remaining. No afterlife, no memories. Only the last generation moves forward who are so far from human as to no longer remotely relate.
This movie is VERY special, (although not for everyone)
Wonderful series.
Superb! Thank you for this star chart.
I'm glad you liked it!
A great ground breaking book and miniseries. It's gestation as a miniseries was endless due to the sfx it would take to do the book justice. Finally happened and it was worth the wait. Charles Dance portrayal of Korellan was an inspired choice. His voice made the character awe inspiring. Arthur C.Clarke would have approved the entire production.
Great book, as are many others.
I watched this when it aired... and really liked it. Bought it on Amazon... have to watch it again.
Please the name of the movie
WOW I was glued to this story. an audio book & video in one. I like watching videos like this. That was an intense watch following every word anticipating the conclusion.
Wow this sounds incredible
Ok thanks! This blows highs on a MASSIVE scale!! Depressing AF!!😮
You don't really get it in the miniseries, but in the book, the reason why we recognized the aliens wasn't that the aliens had been to earth in the past, but because of space-time curvature we "knew" they would be there at our end. How cool and poignant is that?
so...they look like demons, not because demons existed in our past, but because the space-time curvature ... am i reading that correctly ?
@@MM-24 Yes. The "future memory" humanity has of them was as evil demons just because they are there at the end.
@@nsbd90now ok yea, that is def very cool backstory

Something you can't tell from this recap, Karellen the demon alien was played by Charles Dance. AKA Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones.
They twisted and shortened the plot, well done ,maybe an improvement on other attempts BRAVO !!
Childhood's End is an American-Australian television miniseries based on the 1953 novel of the same name, by Arthur C. Clarke, and developed by Matthew Graham. It premiered on Syfy on December 14, 2015
The overmind is an interesting analogy for the ultimate awareness and consideration of Matter, Energy, Space, and Time that is the material universe. Nothing is really destroyed it's just rapid change in relation to our viewpoint.

I have that same sofa that Milo was sitting on... except mine is nice.
There was an episode of either the outer limits or the twilight zone titled "To serve man". What an ending that had!! This seems very similar
How? In to serve man, the humans were the food. In this one it is literally something beyond everything. That is the best way I can describe it.

This is a great mini-series. I wish that we could eliminate war, pollution, poverty, and all the other bad things that happen all over the world. Too bad humans are evil, greedy, and sadistic. Of course not all of us are all those things. We will be lucky if humanity is still around in the next 100 years. We are close to blowing ourselves up! So, the little girl Jennifer has been absorbing earth's energy for 80 years?
Not the turn I thought it would take.
