I'm in the process of re-examining my EDC essentials lately, as I've found myself traveling more (ten trips in 2023 including two international), and when I upgraded my phone from my crappy I-phone 7 to an Iphone 14, I found I didn't have a constant need to have a powerbank with me 24/7/365. When I needed a powerbank all the time, my flashlight was a Wurkkos TS21 and I carried The Best USB-C to Lightning cable, the Afterplug. That cable went through the washer and drier a dozen times and still works perfect three years later.
So now I'm looking at a smaller light that doesn't have to serve double duty, I'm looking at a new small sling bag for traveling, I'm looking at my last dozen trips and evaluation what was missing and what I haven't needed. It's great to see the suggestions of others and tweak to personal taste.
super excited to watch your progress, good luck with your fast!
benn watching a little over 2 months now and really appreciate your link game, it might seem like a small feature but being able to go directly to whatever thing that crops up that i want to check out isnt something far too many channels get right
I definitely can’t think of 10 absolute must haves but I’m with you on the hat, sunglasses, knife, and flashlight (although if I’ve got my phone I have a flash light in a pinch so maybe not as crucial).
Awesome video as always! Ever since I got it, Best Damn EDC topo TPT SLIDE V1, Kindle Paperwhite, New Era Hat Fisher Bullet pen, Field Notes, wallet, knife, Express Field Jacket, Yeti Rambler, and Adidas Comfort Slides.
Thanks for the gear ideas, just what I needed, more stuff as a guy that lives out of a suitcase... For boots, I've moved away from traditional models and I have several different barefoot boots. I just never get sore in them like I do with normal boots. I've worn Redwing Hanwag's and others in the past and I won't be getting rid of them, but I pretty much never use them now. I wear either the Lems Boulder Boot (leather version) or the Vivo Barefoot Trackers. Both have a waterproof version but mine are just leather and I love them. Vivo's going strong two years later, Lems are a new addition.
Dude... I just found your channel while looking for vids on the Blade Show-ATL-2023. You're content is Awesome! I look forward to watching all your pasts vids as well as future ones! Thank you Taylor! Great stuff! Keep em coming!
Find yourself someone who feels about you the way Taylor talks about his RZE watch. PS- Thanks for the shoutout!
I carry the Fenix E18R V2 these days as my EDC light. I carry larger lights I carry if I feel I will be somewhere it might be needed, but the E18R has become my day to day carry light. it has a 1, 30, 150, 350, and 1200 lumen modes, is rechargeable, magnetic base, two way lock out belt/hat clip, and is small. You said your fenix lights do not have a moonlight mode. And I agree I want a 1 or 3 lumen low mode, and prefer the 1 lumen option. It is a great EDC light, check it out.
Another great video my weekend is complete keep up the great work you are doing
I was surprised you didn't mention the SOG powerpint. :) Just got one based on your recommendation and showed it to my nephew, who immediately went out and bought one.
Love these "10 essentials" vids! I would go with phone, keys, wallet, ring, chapstick, headphones, water bottle, multitool (something small that I can throw in my 5th pocket and forget about until I need it -- I favor the leatherman squirt ps4), hair elastic (always on my wrist b/c I have long hair) and a Clipper lighter. Love to carry a knife, but I can't have 1 at work so I usually leave it in my car when I go into the office!
My wife carries the same EDC as you .
My 10:
1: A key organiser (i brought an orbitkey bc it fit well with my edc, and now i can't go back.)
2: A mous case (i was susceptible to their good marketing and brought one, then i drop my phone off a rollercoaster and it is fine, so i buy again.)
3: Jeans (ik its not the most practical in all environments, but i almost always wear them when im not at home.)
4: A dog lead (i keep it in my bag, when i get home i can take my dog for a walk right away bc i have it with me, and unfortunately a house near me is a bit irresponsible and leaves their door open and their dog runs away frequently, this helps me return them.)
5: Footwear that doesn't use laces (this can be boots, shoes, or some version of off brand crocs. I used laces for a long time and got bored, so i bought some chelsea boots, they were life changing. I got some off brand crocs that are used constantly for when i need to let my dog out into the garden or if i need to go get something from the shed/garage. I now have some boots that have laces on the front but a quick access zip on the side, these i use every day.)
6: A hard drive (i need to move stuff through different computers alot, and the cloud has made me angry more times than i could count if i had ten hands. Eventually i just got a portable hard drive and it has made everything much better, and the cloud is just used for backups of stuff, and finished projects.)
7: My bag (i had cheap bags for a long time, but they kept breaking so eventually i got a fjallraven backpack, and the difference is night and day.)
8: Earphones (wireless in ear ones. Audio quality isn't that important to me for these, i use them mostly for listening to music while commuting. For when i need good quality i have some wired ones from KBear. I use these when working or if i just want to relax. Any audiophiles will have probably heard of this brand, they're the KS1's.)
9: Hoodies (it is rare i won't be wearing a jumper, especially in winter, but i always get hoodies over any other kind. I use the front pocket for quick storage if i need to put my phone away for a second, and i generally store a pair of gloves in there during winter.)
10: Glasses (i need them to see, and i look odd without them. This one is a very literal answer to what i couldn't live without.)
Loved this video!! Crocs are highly underrated 😂👏🏽👏🏽
Always needed to wearing glasses all my life, so I think many people might be interested about stackable glasses with magnetic layers:
magnifying, sun, draft & work protection, which I have found recently.
1. layer = clear glasses, magnets on the left and right side can keep each next layer of:
2. magnifying-,
3. sun-,
4. night vision-,
5. work protection - glasses.
I need 4 (normal) - 6 (reading) dioptrin, but magnifying glasses are only 2 dioptrins, still helpfull wearing stackable glasses over my normal 4 dioptrin glasses!
Of course my top 10 EDC are the usually ones: glasses, keys, portemoney (pocket money purse), SAK (6 layer), flashlight, german shopping cart-metalliccoin, mini aid, paperclips, pencil size mini bit set screwdriver and leatherman clone together in a beltpocket inside my bagpack for mobile on the get home bicycle repairs etc. I am also used to take my bike repair kit in my bagpack with gloves and more.
I love my tpt slide. I work in a warehouse where I'm constantly cutting boxes so I have mine on a stretchy lanyard so I can just yoink it out and get to work
Pocket knife: BM Freek. SAK Craftsman knife. Opinel 8 Carbone (to not scare people for food cutting). Flashlight: Lumintop AA.
Tape measure: cheap little HF 10 foot. Electric lighter. Insulated water bottle (hey, it's Arizona and a BSA principle) : Contigo.
3 Pieces of rope/paracord for knot practice and utility. Bandana. Wristwatch: Timex Expedition. Android Cellphone. Wired ear buds.
Yeah, that is 12, sort of, but it is the standard kit. I also have a Kershaw pry tool on the on the key ring, but that is really just keys.
I'm in Arizona, so the anti-carjacking tool goes along unless there are too many annoying stores on the route.
That's it for my "10" items.
I do have a little car bag that holds charger stuff, backup battery and sunglass clip-ons.
You might wonder about the tape measure. When I find an interesting knife (e.g. swap meet), it is nice to get good measurements. I may not buy it right away, but will take measurements and go research it. Or just confirm that the measurements match a quick web search.
For example, there was this interesting old Cold Steel fixed blade in CarbonV steel. I was thinking maybe Recon Scout. But I took measurements and later confirmed it was a Bush Ranger (the old fixed blade, not the new budget folder - re-used names - aaaargh!).
I also tend to have some hardware issues that need solutions. The solutions aren't always obvious, but when I see the item, it is clear it could solve the problem. But I need good measurements to be sure it will fit/work.
Great video Taylor. I’ve been subscribed to your channel and carls for a while now and I’ve really been thinking about eventually getting some nicks boots and even Zac mentioned that nicks sent him a pair to try and he likes them too. There a channel called the gentleman’s journey where he takes a factory tour of nicks. I really like the look of the Americana and the falcons.
I never realized you were a Richardson 112 guy. That's a quality piece of Headwear sir!
Taylor, I own a pair of custom fitted Nick's boots. They are amazing, never regret buying them. Carl is the man, I love his channel as well. He did not stir you wrong my dude. When you can, definitely invest in a pair of Nick's. You will not regret it. Wish you, and the family the very best. Keep up all your hard work.
Just subscribe. Love your content. Haven’t seen you mention magnets. Neodymium magnets. I carry two small flat round ones stuck to my Gerber 600. They are great for sticking schematics to any metal panel I am working in. Great for playing with as well.
Knife (bugout), flashlight (surefire recharable), hat (I have a huge head so the Duluth XXL snapbacks are all that fit), hoodie, phone, AirPod Pros, prescription sunglasses, work gloves (I live on a larger property), Ariat cowboy boots (for the same reason), watch (Seiko that takes a licking and keeps on ticking).
Great vid.
Great video (as usual). I wouldn't be surprised if you already know about this company, but I have a couple of boots from Thursday Boot Company. In my opinion, they're great. They have several different styles, usually go for around $200 (which is a pretty penny, but for boots, I think that price point is pretty fair).
I also recommend Thursday boots especially for those with larger feet and those looking for a more budget option.
Hey brother, new to your channel. I heard you mention you are in Concord. I am assuming New Hampshire? I am not far from there. Would love any recommendations for getting gear here in the area. Thanks!
A couple of thoughts.
RE: your Iron Rangers hurting you, it could be a fit issue, like too wide, too narrow, or even too long. hard to say. In general though, perfect fit is elusive. I rotate between shoes and boots both to save from excessive wear and second, to save my feet. If I had a tendency to develop a hot spot on one pair of boots and shoes, rotating will give my feet a chance to recover so I don't get a blister. Also, I rotate between harder shoes and boots and softer ones. The harder ones tend to have more support, but they are hard so sometimes my feet take a beating. Softer ones are comfortable out of the box, but over time you lose support. But not if you rotate them.
On the subject of shoes, in addition to good boots, dress shoes and sneakers, I also have found a good pair of slip on casual shoes to be essential. And that includes boat shoes and slip on sneakers. It sounds lazy, but sometimes you just need to run outside to get something from your car, or whatever, and you don't want to have to put on socks, and lace up your shoes.
RE: hats. In winter I always have a knit hat close at hand because it gets cold here in the Midwest. In summer, good to have a baseball style cap to keep the sun off my face.
I like to keep a basic multi tool on my keychain like the Victorinox Manager or mini champ.
Not so much on my person but I keep a Victorinox Pioneer and also a tactical pen in a Hitch and Timber leather pocket organizer, in my car. And I keep a couple of Fisher space pens in my briefcase, which I carry with me most of the time during the week.
The briefcase isn't one of those fancy leather ones, but an LL Bean nylon bag. Pretty much essential for carrying a tablet or laptop, calendar, pens, business cards, and can even double as an overnight bag if I am really trying to be a minimalist.
Sunglasses - I prefer Wayfarer style sunglasses. I bought my last pair at Costco and they have held up about 3, maybe 4 years. For biking, I go with Tifosi wraparound style.
Watches - I agree. I always wear a watch. I rotate between about 25 watches, which sounds like a lot and is, but once you get the bug, hard to stop, kind of like some guys with knives.
Ok where / what brand is the ceramic utility blade? Love the videos and great products. Thanks Taylor.
Love your channel! New subscriber. Was wondering…. What ceramic utility blade inserts do you use?
Hey Taylor, I finally got a TPT Slide! Love it, but I want a black ceramic blade and I can’t find them. Where did you get the blade?
For boots, I recommend trying Whites or Nicks boots. Handmade custom boots, starting at $450, they are well worth the price tag. I go thorough boots every 8-12 months. Department store boots didn’t last and once they were done they were donee I liked my red wings but same thing, once they were wore out they were thrown out. With Nicks or Whites, they’re custom made, handmade, all leather and repairable and rebuildable. When they break or wear out, send them in and they rebuild them. Even with soles that I wear out quickly, they’ll repair them as many times as I send them in. Instead of a year long boots, you know have a lifetime boot. Worth every penny.
Love your hat.
I just started with edc because of you, i live in the netherlands so i cant carry a big knife with me unfortunatly. And im a student so dont got a lot of money to spend right now i own a pioneer x alox from victorinox and this week i get my edc pouch and the munkees nailcippers i do want the sog powerpint in black but i dont know if that is the right pick or if i do search for something else. Do you have any must have recomandations? Sorry for my English i try my best. Youre the best keep on going
CCW: Shadow Systems MR920 + Tier 1 Axis Elite holster + spare mag + Supreme Appendix Nexbelt
Knife: Spyderco Para 2
Boots: Blundstones
Wallet, phone, keys
Every other day? Switchblade backpack from Eberlestock, holds all the extra stuff
Almost always have a flattened ice mountain bottle in my back pocket
Taylor, I love your videos. I need a good pair of boots. What are the first ones you talked about and are they still available?
And not just any Crocs…….but the new All Terrain Crocs! I love mines!
That sure looks like a cut in your Iron Rangers. Can’t blame the boots for that! I agree there are better out there, but I love my Iron Rangers. I added a 10oz veg tanned leather insole (just cut them myself) and they’ve been amazing (well, after the break-in period)
Finally this one!
I agree......I don't drink it on the daily... but I do buy it and have it for camping or road trips or anything else like that.....death wish and black rifle both make and sell AMAZING instant coffee!!!!!!!
I love my nicks boots. I wear 10inch builder pros everyday and they’re awesome. I’m getting another pair for less work related days because I love them so much. I’m local to them too
Do you have a link for the black ceramic razor blades? Thx.
Peter McKinnon did a video about the Apple Watch and how it doesn’t work on people with tattoos on their wrist. There’s a clear round sticker from 3M that he uses to make it work. Maybe that could solve the rash problem as well
Wait just one second. I've been watching your channel for a while, and I'm just now learning that you live in Concord? Thought you were over by Raleigh somewhere. I'm a few minutes up the road in Salisbury and stop at Groundwork now and then. Solid spot.
I used to live there. I’ve moved. But I’m still there every day
Hey, quick tip, might wanna add sound ;)
Tell us about the ceramic utility blades.
Yeah I need to know where to get these
That black ceramic utility blade? Where did you get it from?
Love the videos and the channel, but I'm struggling with is all these edc items require pants or shorts with belts. but, what do you do when you go to the gym? how do you take you edc (knives/guns/tools) to the gym wearing gym shorts or warmups?
curious to see what you choose for boots. I lean toward my Alden 405s, Redwing 877s, or Santa Rosa Stamford. I myself am buying some Nicks. pair of travelers in dark roughout. wait kills me but i need to pull the trigger
I think the reason why you get a rash with the apple watch, is because of the glass. My best guess is that it creates a vacuum between the glass and the skin of you wrist and thus your skin can breathe. I have the same with watches with a crystal case back. (specially the larger ones)
Phone, wallet, knife, watch, keychain (flashlight & torx tool on it), usually... sunglasses, hat, pen.
It's always good to remember, that you get dehydrated faster in fall/winter weather too.
Damn u got up hopes up on those ranger eye patches there sold out 😭 lol are they coming back out cause I need them lol
Chapstick is a must for me! Can't go without it
Taylor, I agree with you 100%. I carry also the exact list of items and I love my Crocs as well......Hey, I wonder if some can design some jibbitz or charms for the EDC world.... Maybe a Flint and Steel charm set that can start a fire in an emergency.... Or a hidden blade in the Crocs somewhere. What do you think?
Interesting idea. They do make a little pouch with a zip pocket already
They make flashlights for crocs 😂
Hey Taylor, what is the Apple Watch ultra band in green in the thumbnail? Looks like the scuba band in green.
I have my basic 4 (keys/phone/wallet/gun), then there's the other things... I have a Gerber FAST06 tanto, dozens of hats with patch panels so I can customize any color with any morale patch; my watch is an old Timex Ironman, but it's the stealth model (subdued). And I always keep a handkerchief. There's more, but that's why I have a small EDC bag (Hazard4 Grayman Tonto)
1: hand salve because dust sucks
2: fixed blade because I don't know what it is but I haven't been enjoying pocket knives also tops cat tanto/ red horse malice
3: great grandpa's flatcap for obvious reasons
4: pen/sharpy/highlighter for paperwork
5: mighty hanks thanks for that one
6: key wallet I picked up at a huge vintage store 6 years ago
7: field notes for groceries mostly
8: watch nothing fancy just something that works because I can't justify getting a nice one because I'm rough on everything I own
9: rocky combat boots because I bang my shins on everything
10: ski goggles/balaclava because I ride my e bike year round and I don't mess around with the cold.
Taylor, I’d love to see a vid on budget alternatives to your favorite EDC items. Like sure, I wish I could afford a Chris Reeve but a budget similar knife would be nice haha
Actually, I've been working on putting that exact video together! It's more difficult than it may sound, but it is in the making 🤘🏻
@@BestDamnEDC can’t wait for it. Love all your vids, man. Keep up the awesome work.
Reading all of the comments--I'm sorry, but there are some fancy "preppers" here! Bluetooth? High-dollar sunglasses? Gourmet coffee? Here you go: Keyring. Billfold (from Target). Timex or Casio. Flip phone (yeah, I'm a dinosaur!). Weather-appropriate jacket/hiking boots or sport shoes (no damn Clogs!). Cold Steel 6" Luzon (or Kershaw Blur, if I need the pocket real estate for a spare mag on carry days) Sabre Red Pepper Gel. All I've ever needed out there (in the city).
I absolutely love the Wolverine 1000 milers
You have to try Jim Green boots. They are amazing quality for the money and very comfortable because of the wide toe box.
RED WING!!! Hello from Minnesota. Im sure Red Wing has a great warranty policy. I went to school to learn about things involving feet, walking, and support. It seems to me you are past the point of having broken-in your boots. Perhaps your feet have changes recently (as all our feet change with age). Also perhaps, buying some nice food support inserts may remedy your issue with the sore feet. I hope this helps. Luv ur channel 👍
Great video as always! Say, I've been wondering, is there any reason in particular you don't include a firearm in your EDC? Do you consider the knives you carry potentially useful for self-defense or are they strictly for utility? I've recently added a few items to my carry which have made it more well-rounded but also in some ways slower to access, so I'd be really intrigued to hear you approach the topic from that angle and perhaps offer some relevant suggestions if it's something that might interest you.
Taylor, you should check out this stuff called Tuff Toe. Might help ur Redwings!
Bro, I’m surprised nicks boots hasn’t reach out and sent you some. Zac in the wild was talking about them, they sent him some, and he loves them as well!
What is your opinion on the Kershaw speedsafe?
Where do i get a black ceramic blade for my TPT Slide?
Danner vertigo 917’s. Try ‘‘em out. As comfortable as a tennis shoe but durable as all get out. I’m on year 4 of mine. Puffer looks good, I’ll have to check it out.
I looked into that phone case, but after pricing the case, magnetic ring and windshield mount it was like $180 and I can survive with my current $40 setup
With different light sources, power banks, cables, and batteries I have a 20 lb rucking plate in my EDC bag. It is a work in progress.
I go out with most of this stuff except sunglasses, hats and coffee, I love my flashlight and knife, instead of a hat I wear rings, I don't go anywhere without a ring on my finger. I also carry a zippo in my 5th pocket
love me some Boulder boot from Lems.
About your foot pain it could be a early sign of gout, I first got shooting pains in certain joints
Can you elaborate on the ceramic blade
Try the Status Bluetooth headphones, I love mine!
Rocking the Saltire flag at the gym. Great to see. Another great video.
Best sunglasses for the bang 😂😂
Where can I get a ceramic utility blade?
seeing juno coffee in a best damn edc video is a clash of worlds i never would have expected. shout out to ryan over at how not to high line who owns the company.
Ten items?
#1: Glasses. No, not sunglasses. Prescription.
#2: Leatherman Wave+
#3: Kore Belt (where the Wave+ hangs out.)
#4: Rogue Wallet
#5: Pocket Knife
#6: $20. I try to have $20 bills stashed in an internal pocket of each of my jackets, there's a $20 sandwiched in between my phone and phone case, another in each of my vehicles' registration packet, etc. When fully "stocked", between the individual $20s and the 5x$20 I try to keep in my EDC bag, I probably have close to $250 squirrelled around so whenever I go forth I'll have emergency cash.
If I have my keys, I have a flashlight.
I dunno, 10 items seems a bit much to me...
Taylor If you love Crocks you should check out the adidas clogs. 💯 % waaaay softer and more comfortable. I have severe neuropathy in my feet and they are amazeballs
Timberland pro inserts are life changers. I call them fat boy inserts. Have a set in pretty much every pair of boots I own. Definitely recommend.
have you seen the olight arkfeld? pretty neat, has a moon light mode and turbo mode. has a laser pointer. and its pretty small
Ditto here. I know olight has its detractors but I've been using them for the last 6 years without any major issues. I've had my few melted pockets from the light going on due to the magnetic switch and my various metal pocket clutter, live & learn.
Something might be up with the Apple watch HR sensor or the glass. There's a ton of complaints online about the rash and a ton of articles saying Apple never responded to the complaints.
AirPods Max you can use a lightning to 3.5mm jack cable for any hardwire needs like gaming or connecting to audio equipment. Apple sells the cables
Great video as always! FYI though, the Rexford site shows "out of stock" on everything except the leather goods. I'm seeing that more and more on sites that cater to the EDC community. I assume it has to do with supply chain issues? Do you have any insight on what's up?
I didn't mean to suggest all of the hardware on the website is out of stock, but the page in the link provided. No RUTs to be found.
I can't speak to everything but RUTs aren't made full-time. Todd makes them in batches when it makes sense to. And for other brands, I imagine it's a combination of supply chain and actual limitation of man power. A lot of these shops are really small outfits -- 1-4 employees that can only move so fast.
@@BestDamnEDC Thanks! Makes sense. I look forward to future content on your channel. Definitely some good reviews from someone who knows their stuff.
I have noticed that if there is uneven ware and tare on my boots that can affect how my feet feel.
Enjoy the channel bro.
Yeah I actually feel irritated if I ever leave my house without my watch. Sure I can check on my phone, but I personally don’t want to waste time checking time.
Taylor you should try a pair of Origin boots made in Maine.
1. Lego keychain (Chewbacca)
2. Leica M10 Monochrom rangefinder camera
3. Vi Vante woven leather lens bag
4. Moleskine notebook (doubles as wallet)
5. Ariat Bench Made Clanton Boots (black)
6. Ray-Ban Wayfarers (black w/transparent trim)
7. Watch Series 5 (white ceramic)
8. iPhone 14 Pro Max (w/Mous case)
9. AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
10. CRKT Squid II (micarta version)
or CRKT M16-14SF (full hilt folder)
I swap the Squid for the M16 when I’m out shooting street photography due to usually having between $25K-$50K worth of Leica lenses on my person. I'm planning to upgrade to a small firearm soon.
I occasionally also carry a normal color Leica M10, or an M7 if I feel like shooting film, but the Monochrom goes everywhere; weddings, dentist appointments, grocery store, bathroom, etc.
The Mous phone case is that ridiculously over-engineered polycarbonate and aramid fiber case with internal impact-absorbing cushions that was famously drop-tested from a helicopter. :D
That's my loadout.
Early enough the quality only goes up to 360p, sweeeet. I'm never this early!
Good vid man! You only have one pair of boots? 😮
For now. I got rid of all my others when I got the Red Wings.
try some jim green boots i have the african ranger flippen amazing
I find it hilarious that you can pour out your drink when going through security then fill it up again on the other side. Like, what's the point of the check then 🤣
Hi Taylor. Love your channel. I am looking for a EDC bag. Small sling back pack style. Plenty on the market. But none that you can swing around for access . At the same time organized from top / side you are accessing from . Conventional bags no matter even if they opens from side you have to still get to stuff side ways. I guess it will be something like a small sling with almost fanny bag access . ( The best way I can explain). Let me know if one comes to mind.
I used the Aer city sling 2. I recommend it
@@JoshBalingit thank you for your response. I will look into it.
Bellroy venture sling is imo the best and I’ve tried 50+
Chapstick is definitely on my list
Wish I could afford to live with some of them items 😂
What watch band is on your Ultra in the thumbnail? it looks like an army green ocean band, maybe third party?
I don’t know if you’ve tried Bose headphones but they’re pretty nice, try them out if you get the chance
Almost took my like back with that croc comment, but I love ya too much
