'MP Obsessed With Gaza Won't Help Rochdale' | Julia Hartley-Brewer On George Galloway

  • In the aftermath of the Rochdale by-election, the political landscape has been stirred by the victory of George Galloway. The Prime Minister's criticism of Galloway's win has sparked a heated debate about the direction of British politics. Galloway's controversial views on foreign policy, particularly his stance on Gaza and Hezbollah, have raised questions about the impact he will have as an MP for Rochdale.
    The Prime Minister's remarks about Galloway's win being "beyond alarming" have been met with strong opposition from Galloway and his supporters. Galloway, in response, expressed his disdain for the Prime Minister, setting the stage for a clash of ideologies and political strategies.
    The election campaign in Rochdale was marked by divisive tactics, with Galloway's focus on issues like Gaza and the Middle East drawing criticism from some quarters. The leaflets distributed in different wards targeted specific demographics, raising concerns about the politicization of sensitive topics and the impact on voter perception.
    Julia Hartley-Brewer calls out Peter Ford, deputy leader of the Workers Party of Britain, after he accuses her of 'talking nonsense' about George Galloway.
    "Wasn't that a wonderful Freudian slip 'the people of Gaza', no they're the people of Rochdale."

    I didn't hear Mr Galloway glorify Hezbollah, I heard him say Hezbollah was part of the Lebanese government with whom the UK had sovereign relations. Neither did I hear him dismiss what happened on Oct 7th. Perhaps this lady,whose family evidently could not decide whether they were fond of jam or beer, was listening to another speech. Or, just wanting to denigrate Mr Galloway.

      Hamas weren’t engineered by Israel. Money was paid in an attempt to protect Israeli lives. Like protection money. Who is to blame? The owners of the protection racket ie Hamas. But protection does not work. Maybe if Israel had done what it’s doing now - ie removing Hamas - it would have been better, but Israel didn’t want the war it is now having to fight. Since 2008, the UK has licenced arms worth over £574 million to Israel, according to analysis of Government export data by Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), a UK based pressure group that seeks an end to the global arms trade.
    In relation to the current Israel-Hamas conflict, CAAT has highlighted UK industry contributions to F-35 combat aircraft, which CAAT says are “currently being used in the bombardment of Gaza”.

    By all accounts - if they are to be believed - in some districts of Rochdale 95% of votes were for Galloway. Something like 75% (!?) of all votes were postal (as opposed to the average of 2.5%) So postal vote rigging.
    Fact is the Tories -and especially Labour - have been perfectly happy with postal vote rigging - as long as they benefitted. In Rochdale it was used against them. And look how fast Rishi Sunak hit the lectern.
    And yet, this was a by-election, not a general, so the incumbent parties in power allow the postal vote to be continue to be (potentially) exploited, as it has in the past.

    • @jimmymcgoo1804
      @jimmymcgoo1804 Před 3 měsíci

      Postal votes are absolutely ludicrous in what is supposed to be free and fair elections, whatever the outcome.
      If you care enough to vote, then go to your polling booth, show your ID, and vote for your candidate properly. Banning postal votes would stop both any attempt to rig an election and stop "the election was rigged" being used as an excuse by any side that lost.
