      They never taught us Sex Ed in high school (I was taught Sex Ed in 5th of 6th grade thank goodness so I wasn't completely unaware of what sex was and how babies were made) and we also had an on-campus daycare that all the teen moms would drop their kids off at right before classes started in the morning and would then pick up their kids after classes ended. There was no sign outside the daycare and it looked like an ordinary classroom from the outside so if anyone was visiting the high school for whatever reason they would never think it was a full blown daycare. It was so normal to see pregnant teenagers around you or to see someone pushing their baby in a stroller on their way to and from the daycare. I remember getting to college and being shocked that there weren't pregnant girls walking around everywhere like my high school did. It wasn't until I was planning on becoming sexually active with my then partner that I realized that my university had a planned parenthood sort of program in the university clinic that educated you on safe sex, consent, gave free STD tests, gave free birth control methods and contraceptives, etc. It was wonderful! They answered all my questions without judgement and were super nice! There was also a daycare for students to drop their kids off at and it was normal to see the daycare workers pulling the kids in a wagon around campus. It was literally like night and day compared to my high school.

The instructor preached abstinence, essentially saying "Don't have sex unless you want AIDS babies" and then followed up with "but if you're going to be a slut here's how to have the best chances and where to get tested." We got all those informational demonstrations but were more than thoroughly discouraged from ever using the information they contained because abstinence makes Jesus smile.

      LeakinBrolly
      Doesn't change the fact that "no" doesn't always mean no. You're oversimplifying.
      Also, you don't always need verbal consent. If someone gets naked, grabs a condom, and starts caressing you or rubbing themselves erotically for you, it's pretty obvious. Honestly, I'm starting to think that all feminists are virgins. Hell, I'm a virgin, and I know more about sex than you people.
      We've been using body language way longer than grammar. Wait, was all sex before the invention of language rape?

    • @laviniarzz
      @laviniarzz Před 8 lety +54

      Inorganic Vegan Okay, stop. You're the one that's oversimplifying here. In situations of kink, even if "no" can't be used, there is always the option for either party to stop because of the safe word. So LeakinBrolly is right, you still have the option of communicating "no", even if the word that you're using to communicate that is something different. Also, I understand what you're trying to get at, but just because you don't always need verbal consent, that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it anyway, especially with new partners. If you've been sexually involved with someone for a while, obviously it's going to be pretty easy for all parties involved to read each other's body language and determine consent. However, if you're doing things with new people, trying something new for the first time, under some kind of influence, or have any reason to doubt about the other person's ability to give good consent, it's always better to ask just to be sure. Consent is not a light switch, it's a negotiated state and an on-going process. Anyone can give or take away consent at any given time, regardless of past history with a person or even if they're in the process of engaging in sexual acts.
      One thing though, LeakinBrolly. Yes doesn't always mean yes - that's where the concept of "enthusiastic" consent comes into play. There can also be situations were one party may not feel safe saying no, so they still say yes as well. If someone is saying yes, but their body language and tone of voice indicates that they're really not into it, that's not practicing good consent.

So it's pretty ignorant to assume all of America teaches this way. Growing up in Michgian, sex ed started in 5th grade. Then in 8th grade middle schoolers take sex ed again. And then they take it once more in high school which gives a lot more detailed information. I would say the only districts that are abstinence only will be very religious communities.

    my high school taught abstinence only, and they carefully monitored the health teacher's curriculum to make sure of what was being taught. when the biology teacher found this out, she tried to cover sex ed under the label of reproductive biology, but got shut down if she taught anything more than the types of reproduction (such as sexual or asexual), or the specific organs involved. so my health teacher came up with her own workaround. each year, our last major project was one where you researched a disease she assigned you, including what causes it and what if any methods there are to help prevent it, as part of a unit on medical literacy and how to do informed medical research. most of the kids in her class were freshmen, but occasionally someone took it as an upperclassman for one reason or another. i personally took it my senior year. when assigning the different diseases, she pulled me aside to talk about mine a bit more privately. she was asking me to give a presentation on HIV. she then explained that in each class she'd give that presentation to a senior she felt she could trust, because she took off the time limit for that presentation, and asked the student to turn it into what was basically a condensed sex ed class. she chose HIV specifically, because it gave the presenter an easy opportunity to talk about both queer and straight sex as part of it. and the school never stopped her, because the medical literacy unit had been there longer than she'd been teaching and HIV was a legitmate disease to cover in it

He told us that consent is the bare minimum, not a gold standard, and the other end was mutually amazing sex. Literally never thought I would hear something like than in a school, even in California.

    • @kittycheshire5099

      @Mr. M Meaning that consent shouldn't be all you hope for. It should be treated as the bare minimum, not as the best outcome. It is like a choice between water and lemonade. Water is the minimum to survive, but the lemonade is better because it has water and added sugar to make it more pleasurable.

Talking with a therapist about it, it turned out that I had internalized the terrible sex education I had gotten to the point where all sex always feels like it's immoral and wrong. I get disgusted at the thought of having sex and sometimes during sex I'll start panicking and try to get away from it. I'm still working through that.

      Ironically I got a better sex ed from my church than my school because it's one of those weird religions where they care more about telling the truth about the world than ignoring all modern science and morality for the sake of arbitrary traditions. I genuinely didn't realize abortions and LGBT people were so controversial until the internet, let alone basic education about the thing that _compels our species to continue existing._

    • @Fralexion
      @Fralexion Před 7 lety +21

      SlushieDee Unitarian Universalism! It's a little hard to explain because it's less about teaching a specific set of beliefs and more about giving guidance and support so each person can develop healthy beliefs on their own. I guess the quickest way to summarize it is the creed: "Love is the doctrine of this church, the quest for truth is its sacrament, and service is its prayer. To dwell together in peace, to seek knowledge in freedom, to the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the divine."
      Like I said, it's a weirdly liberal religion and I can see why a lot of people prefer something that _answers_ questions rather than asks them, but I've always enjoyed this sort of exploration and I like the community it has. It works for me.

India has no laws barring Marital Rape, the UK has a similar or worse by some estimates rape rate as america with 1/3 of surveied people believing if a women flirted she was partial responsible for being raped, in Finland 47% of women reported physical or sexual violence. This is not just an American issue: it's a worldwide issue (mostly). We don't have sex-ed in my country and I don't see it happening in the foreseeable future (sadly). It's a matter of mindset, mentality. That's where the groundwork needs to be done. It's beneficial if schools have sex-ed class with objective point of view (e.g. presenting what is what and explaining basic dos and don'ts), otherwise, you're just imposing your views (e.g. school's or teacher's views) on the kids, while making them feeling bad about themselves (especially for women), nurturing even more insecurities in teens, as if they don't have enough problems with navigating the growth process as it is.

Next groups of kids go from class learning about different parts of sex (protection, disease, sexualities, etc). I had a really good sex education where we looked at many different types of protection (I had no idea there was so many), how to use them, what they were, and how effective they are. We could even write questions on paper and put it in a box that the teacher would answer in a judgment free zone.

      It seems like you have a very sterotypical simplified perspective on male sexuality. There is a load of reasons why males can feel preassured into having sex at a very young age. Or in situations and with people they don't feel comforatble with.
      Males are humans as well. They are not mindless sex machines.
      And because you didn't come into that situation (yet and hopefully never), doesn't mean you can speak for all males.

      What I think is more likely is that the kid just had good parents who told them what sex actually is and it obviously sounded nice. That's not really dangerous and a kid being sex positive from an early age is probably gonna be an incredibly help for them as they grow up.

To make matters worse, she attended Liberty University, which is a very, very conservative Christian university, hence where the "abstinence or death" mentality comes from. Still, none of that gives her to right to basically slut-shame young boys and girls and force feed them fear and false information.

      The analogy you used makes about as much sense as mine, that is to say, none whatsoever. A man who has sex with a woman is not a master conqueror of incredible skill. It's a man who is engaging in an action that's supposed to be fun, important and/or fulfilling for both parties.
      The notion that the number of your partners, no matter if it's 0 or 1000, is any indication of how "good" you are, makes life worse for both men *and* women.

      +Michael Sporzynski Fuck you guys really dont get how man and women work lol. A MAN has to actually work to fuck most of the time because 90% of women dont want to have sex with any guy. Thats why teenage boys get so much bullshit for being a virgin. On the other hand any women can fuck whenever they want to because a shit load of guys just want to fuck and get rid of some blue balls. So having sex is not as hard to "achieve" as a female. Man also biologically are made to have alot of sex to to creating more children and spresding their genes, women on the other hand are biologically wired to have sex with only one man who is willing to protect them and their child, altough this stuff may sound primitive, those hormones and brain structure still exists. Medically speaking many diseases that are transmitted sexually are hidden in the vagina unlike the penis because its inside the body, so if women fuck alot they are more likely to get a disease and they dont know as opposed to man.So biologically, medically and socially speaking, its not as bad for a man to have many partners as it is for a women. Do I believe that women who have more sex partners in their lives are sluts? Ofcourse not, but saying that a man and a women are the same at this subject is very ignorent.

    "Why are you trying to yell the horniness out of teenagers?!" I am dying. I've heard of this lady and she is nuts. A West Virginia high school senior Katelyn Campbell spoke out against the school having her because they not only didn't tell parents beforehand (students got very short notice), but they made every student in school that day go and blocked exits so they couldn't leave. She said many degrading, sexist, shaming messages (and talked about religion too despite it being a public school) making students break into tears. The principal retaliated against Campbell threatening to try to get her admission to Wellesley rescinded. Lucky for her the ACLU granted an injunction in her favor and this principal is an idiot who didn't know Wellesley is one of the most liberal colleges in the U.S. and they posted on their social media that they were "excited to welcome Ms. Campbell in the fall". Pam Stenzel also has a youtube channel and has been on other channels here but she has disabled all comments and ratings on her videos. Funny how she's so quick to voice her bizarre rhetoric yelling at teens that they're wrong if they have sex but when someone else tries to question or critique her she can't handle that. Hypocritical much? Also she loves to say things like 'if you are on birth control your mother probably hates you', 'birth control makes her [a girl] ten times more likely to contract a disease than if she were not taking that pill/shot/etc, and is likely to end up sterile or dead', 'condoms don't work', 'sti tests can't tell you what you don't have', '90% of hpv results in cancer and usually requires radical hysterectomy' and others. Not a shred of medical evidence supports anything she says. When I watched her videos I honestly wondered if she wrote her speeches while smoking meth or if she was a troll, because I can't imagine any sane person in a level headed state of mind honestly believing this nonsense. It's one thing to be anti-premarital sex for religious beliefs or to exaggerate stuff about condoms not working (untrue but I digress) but this is just over the top insanity.

    I go to a catholic all girls school. It was literally such a shitty health unit. They didn't even mention non-heterosexual sex and when I pointed that out my teacher said she "couldn't speak to that".
    They told us what birth control methods were available, but didn't explain how they worked and followed that by an entire lesson on how ineffective condoms are and how the only real way to avoid AIDS is abstinence
    They did not even TOUCH ON consent, except to tell us that "silence means yes" as a way to get us to protest loudly but it's still a fucked up message.
    One of my friends said something about how girls can pressure guys too but it's more socially acceptable, and another student responded "ya but what kind of guy wouldn't want sex, honestly" to which the teacher just gave a knowing chuckle. Like wtf.
    Most of the focus was on giving us the bare minimum information, then impressing upon us how emotionally damaged,pregnant, or even dead we'd be if we had sex.
    Fortunately a combination of my social circles and the Internet have taught me most of what I need to know, but there were definitely girls in that class who needed that information and never got it. One girl I know has very conservative parents and by the end of the course she still thought you peed out of your vagina, like it was literally useless except to make impressionable or naive people afraid and less likely to be safe because condoms don't work anyways right?
