The Reason Behind Vera Ellen's Covered Neck
Vložit
- čas přidán 26. 04. 2024
- Throughout the years, numerous rumors have circulated about Vera Ellen, but one particularly enduring one pertains to her wardrobe in the beloved 1954 film, White Christmas. In every scene, Vera Ellen can be seen sporting either a stylish choker necklace or attire with a high neckline, effectively concealing her neck from view.
Being a trained dancer she was told by instructors that her neck was tall for her frame. By wearing such items she was able to visually shorten it by giving it a detail point. Effectively, shortening its appearance. A choker isn't going to hide flappy skin.
Best explanation right here! 😊
This makes more sense 👍
That’s what I was thinking.

Thank You
Exactly. I wish a thin choker could hide my aging neck. Folks, it takes much more .
It actually draws attention to the area
It absolutely causes people to look more.
I know right? 😢
😂😂😂 True!
Lol wish I could hang a string of pearls and not have a waddle 😂
Because a pearl choker conceals so much.
💥💯 When you know you know.
It was just a fashion style.
And either way, she was an astonishingly, remarkably beautiful woman.
And as far as I've heard, she was also completely classy and intelligent.
Agreed...it was part of her what we now call "brand".
@MiaMichele9696 nope. It was because she thought her neck was "too long".
Dude, she was sickly skinny. How could you say she was remarkable? Have you seen the film I’m recent years she looks on the verge of passing out in almost every dance scene. It’s sad
A choker necklace isn’t hiding anything.. so bizarre that people would jump to such extreme conclusions.
I have neck lines and I'm in my 30s and uh yeah a choker works perfect actually lmao
A choker definitely isn't hiding anything. Even more bizarre, this woman had the tiniest waist I've ever seen, but people are talking about her neck. Maybe they coincide in this fairytale. Either way, I love this movie and I always thought she was adorable.
Those aren’t even from the movie, trust me her neck is covered in the movie.
Right I'll be wearing a thin ribbon now to hide my neck 😬😒🙄
Woe it didn't hide a thing
Whats crazy is the constant insanity she's gorgeous
Ans so to hear anyone tell her she had anything wrong with her
Is insane but take heart
Lot of pwople lied to like this
I don't believe it a choker necklaces isn't going to hide anything and criticize a woman of a certain style and era of dress is ridiculous
Imagine just enjoying wearing cute chokers and being excited to wear them in your movie, then people are like, "oh makes sense because of how gross your neck is, right? That's smart." I went through a choker phase in 2013 and that would've crushed me. Then it'd be like, do I wear them or not? I like them but I don't want them to believe that weird, mean rumor is true.
She was one of the most incredible dancers in history.
Ya'll are ALL wrong.... it was so her head wouldn't fall off. Duh.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂💯
This is the correct answer lmaoo i take it you read the children's tale?
😂
@@alexarias5717 that shit scared me
Or she just has a long neck and the necklaces and high collars make it look shorter. I read or heard this somewhere when I was younger. Shocking thing is that I still remember it, when I have lost a lot of other info in my old age 🥺‼️
I agree. She just had a long, thin neck...the necklines and chokers obscured that proportionately. She was beautiful, amiable, a talented actress and dancer. I still love watching her. Her talent is timeless.
Same thing I was thinking.
Me too!! 😄
That's nothing to be worried about. That info is stored in your long term memory, the short term memory is the one being affected as we age.
@@JadedKate … I seem to have lost portions of both my long term and short term memory. Got tested for Alzheimer’s a couple years ago to be safe. So far, just old age.
So age only shows on one THIN line around her neck. LOL 😊. Maybe she likes wearing necklaces. GORGEOUS LADY!!!
That is an excellent point.
Good grief! There is no mystery to this if anyone bothered doing five minutes of research. The costume designer was the Edith Head who famously had a horror of prominent collar bones. She dressed another skinny actress Audrey Hepburn in the same manner with scarves or high necklines (see Sabrina or Roman Holiday). I saw this in an Edith Head documentary which may have been on the White Christmas DVD.
I was going to compare her neck to Audrey’s. Silly Edith! Collarbones are sexy.
That tiny choker hides nothing. Its skinnier than a finger. Thats just bogus
Looks good to me! Looking at her dancing skills, is much more interesting than her neck!
Maybe she has a Trich?
Exactly. She was so incredibly talented. Let's talk about that❤
It could be she liked wearing necklaces or it was just her particular choice. She really didn't have to explain her reasons to anyone.
I thought the chokers and high necklines were elegant and perfect for the Hollywood movies at the time. If a women today wore a high neck elegant dresses like she did she would stand out as the most classy women in the ball.
@@robertsteinbach7325 yes, absolutely!! I agree! Nowadays, you get women wearing barely nothing, like Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, etc., etc. there’s no class parading around almost naked and demoralizing yourself like they do. They just make themselves look like, “Dyme-A-Duzin.“ The world we live in, women certainly could take some tips from Vera!!!
Exactly. People need to mind their blame business.
BUT, they suggested in the title that the answer is in their video, like her fashion choice isn't the real reason 😢!!!
it was the 1950's. You and your women's lib/women's rights mentality is 70 years too early. This actress didn't grow up in that era. Studios owned their talent. It wasn't about her telling anyone anything. The studio was in charge of her look.
Nah, a thin line choker wouldn’t hide wrinkles and anyway she was way too young in her 30s to have those
I think she just knew what she looked good in
Those dresses were beautiful. And made her have a style of her own.
The clothing was absolutely beautiful.
Simple shapes in stunning colors.
@@little_wonderer9290 Edith Head desiged these.
Oh, good grief... she's just stylin' and prefilen'... ridiculous
Lol. Underrated comment.
What's "prefilen"?
@@G0ddessKelly I'm sure you can put it together.
@@curlybeautyblogger I shouldn't have to.
@@G0ddessKelly Ah, I see. Karen.
Boy could this woman dance! I loved watching her!! So talented and the hours if work she must have done is amazing to me. Gorgeous legs too! I love dancing too and only looked up to Vera in such ahh that I remain her biggest fan loved her in White Christmas--THR BEST! Thank you Vera!
She was an excellent dancer and performer. Choker necklaces were a fashion piece.
Are you kidding me? I wouldn't have given it a second thought. She's still beautiful
Its a shame when women are criticized for dressing modest🤔
Lol, concealing a random body part in particular while the rest of your body is exposed, is not dressing modestly... 😂
That's not what modesty is 😂
Whenever I’m feeling too exposed, I’ll make sure to throw on my modesty choker 😂
@@BandlerChingbahahah same 😂 darn the monsters who can't handle our modesty 😂
adam's apple.
I think she had a lovely neck and the pearls and choker style necklaces brought attention to it. Those little bits of jewelry didn’t hide a thing
😂
I’m removing this from my watch history 😹
🤣🤣🤣
This guy doesn't know shit! She was hiding vampire bite marks.

Or a hickey, although I suppose the makeup artists could have found a way to cover that up.
Obviously.
@@zanti4132disgusting. Show some respect.
Total babe...and White Christmas is the most hysterical Christmas movie ever...we never miss it.
Sooo for the exact reason you said wasn't the reason 🤔
Indeed. I said the same. 🤨
So the makeup artists made her insecure about a non-issue? That part is actually the most believable.
WHO CARES 🤨 SHE'S SOOO BEAUTIFUL AND AND AWESOME ACTRESS 🌹❣️☺️😁😀😃
people ridicule anything thats different...
without visually changeing how our eyes see her, she would have a longer neck thats thinner than anyone else.
by placeing something halfway up or a chocker, it tricks the eyes... covers this difference.
she is beutiful and i hate they did this. but conformity could secure your career.
its just attempting to make her more symetrical. but its likely something people constantly bullied her about 🥺
She looked amazing, maybe she was concealing a scar or maybe she just liked chokers. No matter, she was an undeniable talent ❤
Why they say it wasn’t that ominous and then go on to repeat the exact thing lol
I’m guessing things slip when you have ai do too much, but yeah, that bothered me too
Love white Christmas ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I think she's beautiful and what a dancer‼️😮😀😀😀😀
People speculated it was prematurely aged skin due to eating disorders, but it was ACTUALLY....prematurely aged skin due to eating disorders!
Well point it out then. You can't which makes all those claims false.
@NotMykl The comment you are responding to is sarcastically pointing out the stupid commentary, which repeats the same narrative instead of giving us the actual reason.
😂
She did actually have a long struggle with eating disorders, so I suppose it only follows. This video almost makes it funny to hear it, though.
Nonsense. The necklaces she wore are way too small to cover aging skin. A thin small necklace wouldn't cover wrinkles on the neck. The necklaces only covered a line of her neck not her full neck
I always thought it was the clothes that she had to wear on the set of White Christmas
💥GIVE NAMES PROPERLY please!💥 In all correct writing, "Vera-Ellen" has an obvious hyphen. Her mother had dreamed the name. *It's basic courtesy to record right names.*
She was the cutest thing!!
The reason is she has a beautiful long neck and the accessory looks beautiful on it.
If chokers and necklaces hid aging, then all older women would have been doing this. I think it might’ve been something more like a small birthmark or something….. either way, she’s just gorgeous!
That thin necklace doesnt cover up aging.
I dont see any aging on her neck.
Either she liked the style, or wardrobe put her in these designs.
I love that color blue , why don't we have that shade of blue any more,🤔?
@hfrisch007 I agree. It seems like the designers or whoever picks the style trends for the season haven’t picked blue for many years. This past winter seemed like the year for green. Not that I can afford to follow trends! 😂
Oh I do love that 50s pastel blue!!! I would like to see those colors flood back like a pastel kitchen & Mary Kay cadialiacs minus the Mary Kay. And I’m a millennial
Often, the reason for extinct pigments is the way we sourced them became problematic.. Like the red beetles that were crushed up for example.
She looked Beautiful no matter what and I thought the costumes were Beautiful as well
Those so called make up artists and possibly wardrobe team had no clue what they were talking about.
Also, thin chockers accentuate the neck line and draw to it . Not the opposite
Some of the necklaces hid nothing.
Reminds me of a movie. If the girl took her choker off, her head fell off. 🤣
I never noticed that she wore something on her neck. I noticed her dancing. She was amazing.
This video commentary is non-sensical: Rumor says it was due to an aging neck appearance, but in reality it was probably due to an aging neck appearance. ???
Or maybe she was friends with Lestat de Lioncourt?? LOL
You don’t find the truth. All you have are rumors 😢
Beautiful woman
It doesn't look like it. Some women like wearing jewelry like this. It's called "Chokers". They are high lighting and very beautiful.
She was so gorgeous!! I first saw her on the movie "On The Town" and fell in love! I wish that I could have lived at the same time and would have had the opportunity to have met her! She was a doll baby!!!
So someone made her feel insecure🙄
Him. That's a man baby.
ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!! DONT BELIEVE THAT ! She's Beautiful ! NOTHING'S WRONG !! Maybe she liked that style!!❤
How Ignorant can people get?
Vera was an exquisite dancer - just beautiful
One of my favorite dancers! She's fabulous and kicks butt on white Christmas!❤
Maybe it’s just the style she was into and liked how it looked on her. Some people like to wear hats, some people like boots, some people like watches, etc. Simple, no conspiracy theory. Geez 🤦♀️
Vera Ellen was an amazing dancer, she was a beast in White Christmas. I ❤️ that movie!!
Yes, everyone on set knew she had an eating disorder and was obsessed with having the smallest waistline. I still find it painful to look at her in this film due to the weight loss compared to her earlier films.
But no matter what, she keeps your attention whenever she graces the acreen. Such an outstanding dancer.
This is debunked by family and friends per her Wikipedia article
@@millercarlitaWikipedia?
Anyone with eyes could see the significant changes in her appearance. It just is what it was. She was not the only talented performer who struggled with their weight, substance abuse or medical disorders while heads were turned. So long as the studios got what they wanted, no one cared too much.
It reminds me of the children book story of the girl in the bed and she took off her necklace and her head fell off.
Nah, she just had a long neck, that's all.
That’s a shame when a beautiful woman in her 30’s thinks she needs to diet in order to be beautiful.
I don't think it was her , but the sick , spiteful gossipmongers with nothing better to do .
@namesake-mx9nl Nope, actors of the time literally signed their lives away. The networks had the final say on weight, dress, pregnancy, dating, - everything
@@Yuukire Yes i know , but i was commenting on the awful speculation about why her neck was covered . The speculation didn't originate from the studios , did it ? It was the media and public gossipmongers speculating over nothing .
@namesake-mx9nl Methinks it was just someone who heard a tiny whisper and blew it up, for clout.
She always looked so joyful when she was dancing…I hope she really was enjoying herself all that time.
Love White Christmas & Vera Ellen. Let 🕯️ light perpetual shine upon her.🙏💙🤍💛❤️💚🤩🎄🎁
Spell check! Vera had a very tiny waist.
If you look at necks at women in Hollywood- their necks are wrinkled , crepey, and saggy. Their faces look youthful but hands and neck are hard to fake
Or, hear me out, those were fashionable at the time. Plus, anything around your neck draws attention to your face. Aging skin is puffy, those thin necklaces would have disappeared into her neck fat.
This makes no sense. Sue has shockers on. So what the chicken just hides one line of old age on her neck? Who comes up with this crap 😂
She did have a hidden eating disorder, but, I have to agree with you, one choker, a cover-up it does not make! It had to be something more-a surgery scar-but, we’ll never know! Hollywood back then was fully equipped to hide an aging neck! 🤔😮
Chockers not shockers.
@@NotMykl forgive the intuitive keyboard writing. 🙄
Barbara Billingsley cover that area of her neck as well usually with a Pearl necklace. It was sad that she had a deep circular indentation in the center of her neck that she was concealing. If you watch reruns of Leave It to Beaver you will see that she never shows that part of her neck😮
I feel like this was just a rumor that hateful made up because that's just what people do. I've never heard of people aging only on their neck... That would be like seeing Iman but with a 68 year old turkey waddle. 🤦🏻♀️
THE best dancer!!!
She was so beautiful and her outfits in White Christmas was perfect
“The reason behind her covered neck isn’t premature aging of skin due to weight loss and eating disorders, it’s due to weight loss and eating disorders which aged her skin.” That’s what I heard. Also… that is nonsense.
Thank you! I had to watch it twice because I thought I had zoned out and missed something! Zoning out would have been more productive 😅
She had the tiniest waisted.
She was a fantastic dancer. I love White Christmas
What a beautiful and extremely talented woman. I love her dancing. ❤
I’ve always loved a good turtleneck! I’m now 61 so they continue to be in my wardrobe collection.🤣🤣🤣
My neck is short and a turtleneck on me looks like a brace.
I thought it was to cover an Addam's apple
One of the most beautiful women in Hollywood to this day.
I read an article with an interview of jer niece who stated all these rumors are completely false. The high necks were just a choice by Editj Head for the costumes for this film. In other films made the years before and after, she wore regular necklines.
People are always looking for drama where none exists.
I loved her style. Wish that would come back.
Sharon Stone was said to have a throat scar which she was trying to hide (during the Basic Instinct time line)
Sharon Stone does have a significant scar on her throat- although it's faint - from an auto accident years ago.
She didn't use any extraordinary measures to hide it
Such a great dancer and a beautiful classy lady to match.
I had never noticed. I don't think a thin choker necklace would hide anything. She was a fantastic dancer and a beauty. 'White Christmas' is one of my favourite films. How did she get the energy to do those amazing dances?
My daughter has a very thin long next, although most find it elegant. She has always been self conscious, wearing chokers and high collars ❤
She looked amazing in those turtlenecks! If I looked like that in a turtleneck, I'd wear them every day. I look like a potato in a turtleneck.
She was such a beauty and danced with such grace and poise!
I love watching her in White Christmas, her dance scenes are mesmerising.
In the show "The Fall of the House of Usher". I knew Verna was an old woman the second I saw her neck. They made her look youthful at different parts of the show depending on who she was interacting with, but the neck said differently. They should done what they did with Vera.
Also Iwish I could do turtlenecks, mocknecks, and chokers. They look cool. However, I don't anything hugging my neck. I start to pull at it.
Vera Ellen and Danny Kaye were my favorite actors in White Christmas. Their characters were so much fun! Bing and Rosemary were great but Danny and Vera had that young vivacious that was so fun to watch ❤
Hogwash, that skinny necklace wouldn't hide a scratch. She's a beautiful lady and has a beautuful neck.
She was painfully thin but in her day nothing was widely known about anorexia, so it was simply accepted and/or encouraged for her to be as skinny as possible. Today, her size would have landed her either in the hospital or a psych ward or both.
Sadly, yes.
This was debunked by family and friends per her Wikipedia article
I don’t believe that at all 😑
Maybe Vera wanted to be diffrent than other actresses and dress according to her personality. She wanted her own style and uniqueness. I can completely understand this. Who wants to be like everyone else? Especially in Hollywood. I always loved and adored the dresses she wore in the movies. Her clothes and dresses with high neck lines fit her perfectly and beautifully as it made her look more feminine and petite. She was tiny and the dresses she wore embraced her beauty. No other actress could have pulled this off as most were not petite and tiny like Vera. She pulled it off beautifully and for her it became her personality and style in Hollywood. The high neckline became her trademark and she embraced it beautifully.
This is why people who want to shorten their frame are told to wear a contrasting belt. It visually shortens the height by cutting it in half. The opposite is true for the tubby. We're told to wear dark, monochromatic (e.g. all black, all navy blue, all burgundy) outfits because the dark, monochromatic outfit produces a visually taller and thinner silhouette. However, there is only so much a long visual line can do about an obese frame.
She had a hickey 😮
😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
because of the hickey.
Basically she had a "long neck" because she had such a slender figure.
The necklaces and necklines lessened the "Swan neck"
Never noticed. I was too busy being awed by her beauty, grace, and talent.
??? Thyroid surgical scar???
That's what I was wondering
