  • Jenny Offill discusses her novel, "Weather", with Dan Kois, at Politics and Prose.
Writing with the compressed, elegant prose that made her Dept. of Speculation a favorite with readers and critics alike, Offill in her new novel tells a story as intimate and empathetic as it is expansive and visionary. The narrative centers on Lizzie Benson, a librarian whose real calling is tending to those in need-principally her brother, who struggles with addiction, and her mother, haunted by religion. But when she’s hired by the creators of a climate change podcast to respond to the concerns of listeners across the political spectrum, her healing instinct is taxed to the limit. Knowing she can’t save everyone, but trying anyway, Lizzie draws on all available tools, invoking everything from political psychology and earth sciences to disaster management and Greek philosophy.
