This Gadget Makes HALF a Sandwich!

- After seeing this "Hot Sandwich Maker" online, I decided to try it out for myself. It's flimsy and awkward to load, but the final results aren't too bad. Is a HALF sandwich maker useful?

"This simple device will cut your meal intake in half"
It seems like a diy Hot Pocket maker.
some pepperoni some cheese and some sauce right on the money!
@@perry92964I was hoping he would try that. Honestly it sounds like it would be 🔥🔥🔥
For it to be a real hot pocket, you'd need some sort of paperboard to replicate the so-called bread.
That’s what I was gonna say! I bet you could make s’mores with it too
Beat me to it! I thought of that in the beginning.
The best part of the video is the exuberance you have when you get it folded successfully.
This reminds me of something you would take camping. I think a little butter on the outside of the bread may give a tastier product. I like the idea other commenters gave of making & folding your sandwich half before placing in the cooker.
I was going to say we used to have something similar - cast iron with a longer handle - that we would use when we went camping. We'd fill the sandwiches with Nutella, fruits, jams, etc.
I was going to say the same thing. Great mini sandwich maker for use on the camp fire when you’re limited on what you can take with you.
100% this. You usually put a little butter or something on the outside. It basically makes "grilled cheese" style sandwiches. We used to make them with pizza-toppings inside.
Here's a pro chef hack, use mayo instead of butter for a richer flavor and it will *almost* never burn.
How about you buy a sandwich press and find a friend to share a normal sandwich😏
Half a sandwich... what is this? The great depression😂
It's a mini mountain pie maker. They have been a campfire go to for me at least 40 years.
handles look too short for that.
@@autobotjazz1972 No.
@autobotjazz1972 you don't cook over a big raging fire my guy ha you cook over a small controlled fire that's mainly coals
I am aware of that but you also don't need need to be right on top of it as the shoirt handles on these would require at times and long handled sandwich makers of similar design to this exists, better yet they usually can fit 2 full slices of bread. I will admit these could be used on a campfire but i prefer longer handles for safety reasons.@@chasehaynie879
We called them "pudgy pies".
This seems to me like it should have been called the 'Homemade Hot Pocket Maker'. You can't say that the end result did not look--and sound--like a hot pocket.
A hot pocket with a dead pig in it. Eating dead animal bodies is so disgusting
@@godjhaka7376 Its great that you have an opinion, but the fact is that whatever it is that you think about humans being OMNIVORES really doesn't matter, not in the long run because people have the freedom of choice. You chose to not eat meat, and who cares? Most people chose to both meat and plants, and no one can FORCE them to stop, but you sound like you might want to IMPOSE your beliefs on everyone else. Weird huh?
Its called a jaffle
@@godjhaka7376Ok vegan Karen. 😂
@@Southernguy39
Ok walking heart disease. 😂
Next time slice of banana length wise. You will get a better peanut butter to banana ratio, and it will fit better in the maker.
Might be good for mini hobo pies like we uses to make camping with the sandwich iron. Sprinkle buttered bread with sugar and cinnamon, fill with canned pie filling and toast it up.
That's what I was thinking 100%. Those aren't even that great though tbh
That's the first thing I thought of. Put a longer handle on it and it's campfire pie time. We used the camp sandwich version with pre made pie crust and fill it with crushed graham crackers marshmallows and chocolate to make s'mores hand pies.
Full sized versions of this product have been around for a long time, so far as I'm aware. They're campfire and fireplace cooking devices, and certainly seem convenient. The smaller size and non-stick surface of this product is essentially just for novelty for the most part. Functional enough, but less practical. I imagine other companies have made larger campfire cooking devices like this using modern non-stick materials for years now, but they're mostly sold from those specialty companies that cater to that crowd.
It looks like it is great for making food for a four year old.
You don't have to put the bread onto the plates, and awkwardly balance and insert the fillings like that. Why not just build the half sandwich first, then insert the whole thing into the plates after it's built
@@7shortofperfectionThat kinda makes him perfect for the job.
He was using it like the manufacturer showed in their video. It's how most people would use it because it's not fussy. Cutting bread and assembling first would work, but the idea is to be simple. Toss it together, fold and cook.
If you cut the bread, maybe. But if you try to prefold it, the bread springs apart
@@kharmachaos667 Just hold the bread down while clamping in down?
Common sense
Would have been interesting to see you try a couple of tortilla recipes. Small or medium sized tortillas look like they could fit in and make for some tasty quesadillas
I was waiting for that too. I immediately thought of Birria pockets.
This is similar to our camping version, just smaller/shorter handles. We call them pie irons and use them over the fire. Non stick cast aluminum is much better than the classic cast iron.
Yes-in Girl Scouts back in the 1960's, made great pies. Good memories.
Well this is certainly a thing you could buy 😜
I kinda like that it comes apart like that. Super easy to clean no hinges for gunk to get stuck in.
If you get a hang of it, it will be
Pretty Useful for a Bachelor. 😊👍🏽
This product reminds me of more full sized camp / fireplace toasters. Just in mini for some odd reason. The hinge on those is pretty much the same as this, and that is so it can be taken appart easily for cleaning,
In the north of argentina we have something like this, its called "panchuque" but instead of bread you use a butter and milk mix.
Butter and milk mix? I don’t understand how that would create any kind of crust. That sounds just like it would be liquid.
At first I thought this this is DEFINETELY going on the "Worst Of" list, but it seemed to redeem itself. Pretty niche product, like he said, good for camping (and not much else, imo).
This would be terrible for camping. Try and hold that over a fire with those short handles.
We used to have the version that was the size a of full piece of bread for camping when I was a kid. I don't know of anyone that tried to use anything but a campfire with them.
You spelled "definitely" wrong. 😛
@@timwaumanIt's "try to," not "try and."
Those are a knockoff of the original pie irons that we used in Girl Scouts when camping (1960's). The handles were much longer. It was preheated in the campfire, open & use a stick of butter to butter up the insides (it sizzles), put in a piece of bread, filling (sandwich or pie filling) another piece of bread then hinge back which leaves some crust sticking out the sides when locked. Then back on the fire, the crust burns off and turned over and checked. When the crust is toasty it is ready to eat. They are yummy!
Id use pillsbury pizza crust & make hot pockets & McD’s size pies. I personally wouldn’t buy it though.
One of the Amazon comments was ‘not good on electric stoves?’ Ya think?! Genius reviewers on amazon.
Good way to cut the carbs of using two slices vs one
Elvis would have approved of the "HALF a Sandwich" gadget. "fry me up a couple of those half peanut butter / banana sandwiches!"
Another one of those products which could have - with only a little bit more thought - been really versatile and quite good. Larger size. Stupid hinge problem resolved. No way to fix the resistance electric element problem, but using those plugs which aluminium cookware use to work on induction hobs, that would have been easily achievable.
I appreciate Jame's enormous investment of time and patience trying to make this work - not condemning it out of hand, not making empty promises for it.
I have something very similar to this for camping. It's a sandwich/Smores maker. Longer handle, bigger overall, and made of cast iron.
But this is great for a Hot Pocket!
There's one on Amazon that does a full slice of bread for cheaper that has 4.5 * lol
Do you ever get emails/messages scolding you from the companies whose products you gave unfavorable reviews for??
You should review The Ridge Monkey. It does tons of thingss and its only thing you need besides a heat source when you go camping.
Took a long break from your channel just because of the algorithm mainly. And my lord you grown a magnificent beard, give me some of those facial hair genes im desperate for them haha. Glad to see your still going strong.
This could be kinda niche. But my wife and I had weightloss surgery and could only eat about half a sandwich so something like this could be useful for those that like grilled sandwiches who also had bariatric surgery and doesn't want to use a pan for half a sandwich
Always a good day when you post!
Hi James, this little thing makes me bit happy and sad. We have full size ‘pie irons’ by Rome for camping and fire pit food. You can stick anything sweet or savory and heat it over the fire. (Leftovers and PB&J are faves) However this can never work with fire it is short & non-stick which cannot stand fire.
On the other hand for a quick replica without a fire this would be great for a snack or kiddo. The hinge should be open, the bread filled then folded with the device assembled last.
Midnight Peanut butter, banana & chocolate chip treat.
I had a larger version of this like 20 years ago when i was a kid. Only it did a full sandwich and you could also put other stuff in there. We did scrambled eggs once by dropping some eggs in and shaking it over a fire. Didnt leak at all
You made lol when you flipped the first egg... High-Ya! 😂😂👍❤
Reminds me of a weird small pie iron like you use in camping.
Yeah I agree it would be good for camping. Maybe for making snack sandwich pockets or breakfast burritos. I kinda wish it was bigger though.
i had the copper flipwich thing a few years ago. it started breaking after about 10 uses. but it did make a decent sandwich.
We use one of these when we go camping but it's full size for a regular sandwich. We do pizzas, pb and chocolate, and even use Pillsbury pie crust with pie filling. You make them in the fire. Lots of fun and delicious!
Appetizers and homemade hot pockets. Yum. Lol
I have similar products with much longer handles and it fits full size bread slices for when we go camping. These seem kinda cute for making kid sized lunches. I can see where a child would LOVE these. Love your channel!
Also, I'm picturing little hand pies would be perfect in this. We've made them with pizza dough, buttered and oiled well on the outside with pizza fillings but I could see maybe some nutella then sprinkle with powdered sugar when it's done. Lots of possibilities with this!
I can fit two sandwiches in my frying pan.
Maybe for camping? But the handles aren't long enough.
Oh well, Thanks for the review.
If they made sort of a slide hinge where you slide one side over pegs on the bottom (best I can explain it) to hold it together while prepping the sandwich, it would be more efficient and easier to use.
You can't make a single half sandwich. It's called a small sandwich. Having a half of something means there is,or was, another half.
James, I'll give u the benefit of the doubt that you've never had a homemade mountain pie on the fire pit. Very similar cast iron device. Just lay the 2 sides down and lay the bread across the 2 sections. The loose clamp allows the cooking surface to expand for ingredients
Your patience is better than mine, I would have bashed it against the table and trashed it the first go around
Hey Joe, I'd have shot 6 holes in it, but bashing good too...☺ Happy Sunday
Is it my imagination or are you pumping out the reviews more frequently than usual? Not that I'm complaining!
It's because he's been doing more single-product videos lately instead of longer ones containing multiple products, which take longer to produce.
Con: Who wants just a half of a grilled cheese sandwich?
Thanks for the review. (My son “really” wanted one…..just had to have it 😂🤣😂🤣)
I could see this being a useful little contraption for making things like School Lunches for a young kid, or camping as mentioned. Outside of that though, I don't see any reason to buy one when similar products that make full size sandwiches and don't fall apart every few seconds are on the market.
Well this kind of product has been around longer then I have (30) so not surprised that it preformed well. I used to own a whole sandwich version not sure where it went.
My grandparents and my in-laws have one that doesn't come apart that makes a whole sandwich. We use it mostly for grilled cheeses and toasted sandwiches.
I’ve seen in some camping videos and it always looks super small to me. Btw have you reviewed the Ninja Thristi yet?
They do make ones that take two pieces of bread. We used to use them when we went camping as kids. We called them pudgie pies. You put the bread in, add in whatever you wanted inside your sandwich (meat and cheese, or sometimes marshmallows and chocolate,...whatever you wanted), and put them into the campfire. They were delicious!
Dont they make longer ones that are square for full sandwiches already?
Hot Peanut Butter? No thank you
Gosh I tried putting my stuff on one slice of bread, then put that into a sandwich baggie, and the fixings would go all over the inside of the baggie. Then I learned to make a whole sandwich, cut it in half, then throw half of it away, before putting the other half in the baggie. But this product beats both methods!
It never occurred to him to make the sandwich first, then put it into the device.
The funny thing is, this IS perfect for things like hotdogs or making ham and cheese snacks. There are PLENTY of whole sandwich griddles like this. This is the first half one..and to me, it seems like a pretty good idea.
I remember as a kid we had one of those while camping. We called it a hobo pie maker. I was half asleep and went to check it after having it in the fire, and set it on my bare leg. I still have the scar
A whole sandwich size might be useful. Also, if you have short hot dogs and no rolls, this gadget will produce a hot dog sandwich using bread, though it might be awkward adding onions and mustard. But for me, no sale.
Lol looks like an old fashioned toaster or maybe an antique bed warmer .... lol
You should try a cast iron pie iron. It makes a while sandwich and many other things. We have pie iron breakfast on Memorial day and Labor day to celebrate the beginning and end of summer. With a fire in the pit and a mass of ingredients, we make sweet, savory and everything in between. Delicious! Thanks for the laughs as you struggled with your bread. New sub😜
It looks like you can make Pizza Pops with that, in which case I kind of want one.
Edit: Ooh and Jamaican Patties too.
have you ever considered covering one of those viral chinese popcorn pressure cookers? they are like in a weird bottle shape filled with popcorn and then rotated on fire until pressure is reached and the opened with an explosion into a bag. I think that would make nice content and add to the popcorn maker list.
Are you tryna kill the man?
I'm curious too, those videos always look interesting !!
Looks like the campfire sandwich and pie makers. They work really good but you have to have patience, you can only do one at a time!
So it is just a pugie pie pie iron in half size...?🤔 👀
Hooked on your channel. Great job.
The world has had a full sandwich version of this for like 100 years. Why mess w this half slice jawn
Hey James, what you have there is actually a knock off of the japanese made 4w1h Hot Sand Solo maker, so I'm not surprised it wasn't built very well and that people on Amazon had bad things to say about it.
You'll know it's an original if it has "4w1h" as a branding iron on the insides.
I think this might go well in the morning while making your own breakfast, for that morning. Then later in the day for a pre workout snack after work
It really isn't half a sandwich, it is a full sandwich, just in the footprint of half a sandwich.
Wait, what? 🤯😜
😮 With ONLY ONE slice of bread = HALF a sandwich!!!😜
No idea why anyone would use this vs. a full-sized sandwich maker. These things have been around for decades to use while camping (I was brought up to call these things "pudgy pie" makers)..
Just the same old thing that’s been around for years, but just a slightly different shape. I used to use one of those for camping like 30-40 years ago to make sandwiches, grilled cheese etc. . Lol😂
I guess if you prefer the meal combo toasted half sandwich with soup or salad, this will work for you.
It would be pretty funny to bust that out on a camping trip or something - Make a quasi-Hot-Pocket over a morning fire. Doesn't seem terribly useful otherwise, or at least not as useful as a similar full-sized sandwich maker.
A 250 year old design that worked for generations. And they somehow made it fall apart
I would not have lasted half as long as you did before that thing would have hit the trash can! Your patience paid off and you got it to work. Not for me though. I have my parents full size versions that we took camping as kids.
Sheldon: Where exactly does the half-sandwich come from? Are you giving me half of someone else's sandwich, or do I have to wait for someone in the restaurant to order the other half?
You must test the cooling belt Sparkle Tornado. Semes awesome.
I don’t k ow what it is but now I want to know too 🥰🌷
@k8lynmae it is like the neck cooling fan that he has reviewed before. It has more ways, too cool and heat. You can see videos of it on Y.T.
Given me the munchies for grilled cheese sandwich now with HP sauce, for Americans if youve not tried British HP sauce with bacon and melted cheese you need to try it, perfect combination.
This would be great for camping.
The product is just a cheaply made pie iron. Pie irons have been around since the 1920s and are readily available from outdoor and camping stores. They still start around $10. They are often aluminum but the best ones are cast iron. 8 own several in both square and round and have used them on gas stoves, electric stoves, ceramic topped stoves, camp fires and even charcoal barbecues. A good cast iron one will last over a lifetime.
CZcamsr Emmymade recently showed a very similar product that makes UFO shaped sandwiches. That's a product I had as a kid, we took it camping.
I didn't know Mjolnir made sandwiches.
This just seems like a smaller version of a typical campfire pie maker thing
Cast aluminum was invented in the 1850's. Thats their "technology". Wow!
So if they just advertised this as a camping gadget made so it could actually lock together. Maybe a bit bigger they might actually have something people would want.
My thoughts exactly!
Deff looks like it would be best for campfire cooking
If it could somehow cook 4 sandwiches at once, it might be good.
I've always been looking for a good sandwich gadget maker but so far no luck on one.
Please look up, Crimpit. It’s from England. They now have another gadget to make pita bread goodies. Like an UnCrustables maker but also for hot foods
6:01 two statements I've heard before. Consecutively. That third one, not so much.
I kind of like it, but feel like it should be advertised as more of a "sandwich pocket" device.
Echoing what everyone else said. You have to assemble the item and fold it in half by hand first, then put it in the cooker. I have one of these I use for camping
This is a kitchen utensil similar to what my grandmother had that she purchased during the "great depression." This not a new invention. When my nephew visits (13 years old) he asks me to make "Great-Granny's Rectangle Eggs." 😊
It's a Hot Pockets maker! The end result looks very much like the frozen snack sandwiches. If you're a fan of them this might be a good gadget to have on hand. It's certainly more economical to make them from scratch.
There’s room to get creative. I was thinking of pressing chocolate chip cookie dough into the outsides with some peanut butter cookie dough in the center. I bet it could make some great corn muffins too.
These things have been around for 50 years that I know of. I'm 62 years old, my father died when I was 12, and he either bought or made them. Too young to remember. They are great because you can put pie filling in or anything you can think of. Camping meals.
I would have liked to see more different sandwiches tried. Put some ham and swiss in it. Maybe even make a mini calzone with some pepperoni and sauce.
It's a small camping pie iron, of course it works lots of people have used these for decades.. got new tech.. lmao.. goto Walmarts camping section and get a full size one for like 10 bucks
Just buy a full size pie iron from the camping section and will be cheaper with a full sandwich
