  • Solder Vs Crimping, PDM feasibility, documentation, and Mil-Spec vs Autosport connectors, this interview has it all.
    Cody Philips spared a bit of time for Andre and the team at TX2K to run through a large range of topics relating to his career, best practices when it comes to professional level motorsport wiring, materials and a few details on what he has done to his own 2000 odd horsepower, 7 second 2jz powered JZA80 Supra.
    Discussed is how the low quality of work in the industry saw Cody spend more and more time wiring in order to be able to tune cars coming through the door, and as it was something he enjoyed more and more it just became a natural progression to start installing ECUs and then building complete custom looms from there. He has learnt from his failings, and one such is originally using solder for connections which were not up to the task, particularly in offroad motorsports applications.
    The advantages of concentric twisting are also discussed along with what Cody has found to be the most important aspect of any loom, planning, and documentation. One thing we often see in the comments relating to concentric twisting is how you cannot modify the loom once completed. This interview highlights the point that if you need to modify the loom after it has been created, it’s not the fault of the loom, it’s your own poor planning. The easy way to avoid this is spending the time to get it right before you start rather than after you’ve finished as Cody points out along with some other hints on how to make sure that happens.
    The cost of a PDM vs the cost of wiring in relays, fuses, and switches is touched on along with a few neat features on the Supra including a push button start in the engine bay and a MoTeC CAN based keypad in the boot. Lastly, Mil-Spec and Autosport connectors are discussed along with why Cody prefers to use the latter, and how throwing some heat shrink at your harness isn’t all that’s required to bring it up to a professional standard.

    Deutsch connectors makes some great affordable connectors similar to these but they’re more friendly to DIY guys. Highly recommend

    What I see often in racing, all types is that a lot of people already know everything there is to know sadly. They cannot learn and have closed their minds. There are many ways to achieve the same goals. Every pro I know is a listener. You never know, you may learn something someday. Thanks folks.keep racing.

      Yes the Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well, however, it is a great feeling when you can help someone that has a bias like that to understand there is always more to learn. The listeners indeed are generally people who have long ago realized that and are way ahead of many others because of it - Taz.

    what's interesting about these videos is that one does need to have an element of knowledge in the subject prior to jumping into it, there's always a lot of lingo and technical terms used which obviously is fine. we're here to TECH TALK. i wonder if the new guys get scared off when they hear all the terms or try to look them up. either way, the stuff you guys are putting out for free is worth its weight in gold. and your courses are worth their value 1000x over. Taz, Andre, Ben... you guys are rockstars. would love to shake your hand some day soon

      Cheers for the kind words Anthony, I'll pass it onto the team. We have a HEAP of awesome footage from Goodwood this year too, just getting better and better, and the door is always open here if you are in the hood and want a beer or coffee =) - Taz.

    Working for an aircraft manufacturer I can tell you that very few connections are soldered. High quality crimps are the standard when joint failure is not acceptable.

    the biggest problem with soldering is that a. it needs skill and b. people not understanding that there isn't 1 kind of tin for all solder connections xD
    crimping is king though

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes crimping can be done wrong, but it is much easier to consistently get right with the correct tools. Pros and cons for everything and soldering still does have its place for specific purposes and obviously in different applications too - Taz.

    Does wire gauge matter when supplying 12v to certain amount of wires? For example.....6?

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes sir! Pretty much the only time you don't have to stress about selecting the correct gauge wires would be for sensors and CAN applications. Obviously not a hard and fast rule, but if it's not wiring for those two things, you 100% do need to make sure you're using the correct wiring for the job.
      This is covered in the HPA Wiring Fundamentals course along with a bunch of other topics here: www.hpacademy.com/courses/wiring-fundamentals/ - Taz.

    We've done another interview with Cody in the past that covered his 7 second JZA80. The interview your watching above is completely different and talks about professional motorsport wiring, how Cody got into wiring and much more.
