    If I'm reading into this correctly I think Kreia makes an interesting case for dark side users to be something of selfish-altruistic.
    By aiding others you take up their struggle and steal their potential to grow from experience thus empowering yourself.
    Dark side users covet power, right? And selective altruism has much potential to allow one to test themselves through others struggle.
    It would be an interesting thing to see a Jedi make the case to a Sith. Say, A Jedi needs help saving a community from raiders and a Sith is looking to master their lightsaber handling.
    The Sith could help the community not because they care about the communities lives but because they needed material to improve their fighting skills.

      This would have been the best way for the True Sith to go.
      What Sith is more dangerous than one that is willing to work with others - including other Sith - for the purpose of taking on others burdens as they seek their own goal?
      Good or evil, taking on the burdens of others - and succeeding - breeds fervent loyalty.

    • @lI-SunBro-II
      @lI-SunBro-II Před rokem +3

      The biggest roadblock I can see to this kind of interesting take is that most Sith are compelled to seek power from most every source, killing the villagers and the Jedi as well to feed off the pain and hatred it would generate is a foregone conclusion. Clever Sith usually only leave people alive to manipulate or perpetually feed off them later, it all has to be written very carefully if it’s to be a believable action for a Sith to take. A dark Jedi though? The nuance makes way more sense without Sith philosophy in the way.

    But here, just here, perhaps the most important quote about the Force:
    "The highest of mysteries cannot be found by falling to the Dark Side"
    Dark Side offers strength to the user, a single person. Light Side offers strength to everyone around. And it leads to knowledge and enlightement. Whereas Dark Side, just as Kreia and Yoda said, is quick and often short.

      It was likely to make HK more human. Revan seemed to find an ironic value in using humanity to destroy and convert Jedi. He likely wanted HK47 to be more than a mindless droid that eliminates his targets. So he gave him traits that gave him more personality. I don't think so. I just did a run in KOTOR 2 where I maxed Light Side and then went Dark Side to try and get a Sith prestige class and Force Crush, and it's just the same - they comment on you when you hit a Light threshold for the first time, and they comment on you when you hit a certain Dark threshold for the first time, but there was no stuff for "hey, you used to be a good guy, what's up with that." I did notice Atton is the first to comment on your alignment shifts either way, but that's probably because he's the first party member you have and he's meant to be saying this stuff on Telos.

    I wanted to ask, aside from KOTOR 2, what other games or media would you recommend that you consider to be well written and thought provoking?

    • @MakashiOwns
      @MakashiOwns Před 2 lety +1

      TL:DR if you don't want my reasoning and just want to take my word for it: The Elder Scrolls Morrowind (yes the one predating Skyrim), SWTOR (yes the MMO made based on KOTOR), Portal 1 & Portal 2, Pathologic 2, the FIRST (!!) Deus Ex, Fallout New Vegas, Dragon Age Origins, Cultist Simulator, Bioshock 1 & 2 (3 if you enjoyed those), and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.
      Mm, there's a lot of games that have well-written and thought-provoking _sections._ And honestly, that's enough for me because a game kinda needs to let you stop thinking about it from time to time and just sorta do the things for the satisfaction of having to think about it to settle in. It's like how running a marathon feels great but no one would want to run for their lives all the time.
      So with that said...
      - Morrowind and its core storyline about the Almsivi, betrayal of the Nevarine, and the like hit me. Honestly, the game has novels worth of writing - including short novels actually written in it. It has good and thought provoking writing in it by sheer virtue of how much writing is in it. It also has no morality bar, so you're choosing your morality for yourself.
      - SWTOR has its moments. If you're willing to subscribe to an MMO for a month, the Agent storyline has no clear cut Dark or Light paradigm. Rather, it asks you questions about patriotism, the greater good, sacrifice of the few for the many, who deserves truth, and sets you deep inside a conspiracy to reclaim your own mind. The Bounty Hunter storyline likewise has some really surprisingly deep cuts that ask you about what it means to be a hired gun and if being just a hired gun is enough or if you should want more, what the Mandalorians are, what ways you can be a Mandalorian in, and how being a patriot or a Jedi can still make you the bad person through hypocrisy and self-serving denial. There's also a lot of storytelling that isn't told to you per se - situations you find yourself in on quest that aren't acknowledged out loud but have deeper elements. Other choices, while having clear light vs dark elements, are still pretty compelling to me - one quest has you put bombs inside devices. The quest giver wants you to put them in commlinks, which even civilians might pick up. The second one argues it's terrorism and asks you to put them in just weapons, so only soldiers will collect them and be hit. If you side with the second guy, the first points out that civilian deaths could have helped draw the will to fight out of the rebels by showing how their actions had consequences. Honestly, it's also just another entry for "there's so much writing in it that by sheer volume, some of it is really good." Reading the Codex entries that you unlock has this effect a lot.
      - So...Portal 1 & 2 are well-written comedies, which have thought provoking puzzles. The writing isn't what's thought provoking, but it is part of what makes the game good.
      - Pathologic is notoriously intense, but it's also notoriously borderilne unplayable. The game covers 12 days of a game and only 14% of players keep playing past day 4. Pathologic 2, on the other hand, manages to be just as cutting and playable. After 3 hours of reviewing Pathologic and saying he can't recommend it despite all the things he loves about it, a reviewer named Hbomberguy demands you play Pathologic 2.
      - Deus Ex is considered one of the most thought provoking games ever made, and there are dialogues and interactions that still get quoted verbatim because in true cyberpunk fashion, they predicted how the world could look in dystopia that became reality. Note: I mean the ORIGINAL Deus Ex. Not Invisible War or Human Revolution or whatever came after Human Revolution. The first one.
      - Dragon Age: Origins is made by Bioware, and does something I love, which is that it includes no morality meter. The only feedback is your companions judging you, and if you want you can tailor your party to favor companions who will all agree certain choices were great, or send companions away when you do quest start or completion dialogue, or just use the DLC gifts and offset their disapproval. Because of there being no morality meter, and no real consequence to the approval or disapproval of companions since gifts in DLC can offset it if you have it (and the game is so old it's bundled with all its DLCs for extremely cheap)...well. You have to decide your own morality. Note, the game doesn't lack moral feedback because there's no moral choices being made. The City Elf starting quest gives you a choice to avenge a friend's rape by killing him and probably get guards loosed on the city elf village, or walk away knowing he'll keep raping her for a night, but afterwards he'll let her go and you'll get a shitload of money. There are reasons about the greater good you might not want the first one, but being paid to allow a man to keep raping a woman is the kind of thing that fucking sticks with you even in the context of a game.
      - Similar to Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout New Vegas (made by Obsidian, the company that made KOTOR 2) is fucking full of these shades of gray segments where different philosophy and moral ethos will lead you to different choices but all feel complicated. In one, you find a way to enslave humans through plant spores that degenerate their higher learning was a byproduct of a means to mass manufacture plants in the middle of the fallout-stricken Mojave Desert. The scientist you find tells you that you should delete the information because it'll be misused. You can either agree with her, or bring the whole truth of what happened and really try to argue about the horror of what went down and trust that authority figures would be appalled by it too, or you can bring part of the truth to teach them how to farm and just hope no one in authority who would misuse it discovers the mind control part. Oh, and you only get to argue which of these you should do with the scientist if you have high Science rankings herself - otherwise she'll attack you for refusing to delete the information and it's clear you'd have to kill her to stop her from deleting it, and that's a choice too.
      - Cultist Simulator, a small indie game about building a Lovecraftian cult played through cards, has all sorts of deeply weird and mystifying writing that hints at a wider world of wonder but also madness and insanity. It has all kinds of themes about how reality is gray and we should either look for higher meaning or at the very least embrace heartfelt debauchery, the dangers of a wider public knowing the truth, the fascistic threat posed by authority figures even if they're censoring what's genuinely damaging, the way your life can be ruined by circumstance. It's a lot and the game has no interest in telling you how to play it so it's a ton of trial and error, treat it as a Roguelike (i.e. Dwarf Fortress or something where death is required) but it's very good.
      - Bioshock _famously_ has some really intense themes about the risks of both extreme laisse faire economic deregulation and the extremes of communism and how both can be hijacked by cults of personality, as well as metaplots and themes of how the main character really had no choice about what happened in the end, but the people who did were shaped by the choices he made (especially true in 2) and therefore you never really know when your destiny is in someone else's hands or why they would do it.
      - Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is fucking amazing and is one of the only games I've seen that has the balls to give you outcomes where you get offed for trusting the wrong people at the end. It's a lot but it takes about 12 hours to play and it's so good. I'd give you more information but it's one of those plots that's about reading between the lines, deciding who meant what when they said which thing, and I want you to discover it for yourself.

    About this in the first game for whatever reason Revan's face isn't tainted by the dark side even after falling to the dark side. You'd think it would be a dead giveaway that you're Revan. Its the one issue the plot twist that game has.

    Great video but I prefer using the light side of the Exile while playing KOTOR 2. From what I've learned about Meetra Surik because she subconsciously cut her herself off from the force after Malachor V...she didn't feel the lure of the dark side

      @Aurorial in the game you can play light or dark side but in Canon Meetra being a wound in the force and unable to feel it in herself except by her bound with Kreia and others around her. Meetra shouldn't be able to feel the dark side because she isn't entirely like Darth Nihilus even though they are wounds in the force. Meetra still knows right from wrong and has always followed the path of the light
