Most David Lynch fans including me and Lynch himself hates Dune 84. The failure of it and Lynch not having the freedom he wanted is why he made his Lynchian inde thrillers. His story was that Eraserhead was an Inde hit that Mel Brooks saw and hired him to Direct the Elephant Man which got a bunch of Oscar nominations so he was even offered Return of the Jedi. So he decided that he rather make films that are 100% his vision then be a Hollywood big shot. Which even if don't like Lynch (which I expect you don't) you have to respect that sacrifice.
As a fan of the book, I’m so glad I get to be alive in time to watch Denis realize his dream of adapting Dune, let alone the fact that it’s brilliantly done as well.
I just bought the first 3 books. Really excited to start reading them
@@lorenzo_smit that’s awesome I hope you enjoy them!
@@lorenzo_smitI Was Never a Fan of Those Dune Books
Dune part 2 is the best one ☝️
Its visually stunning, but lacks a great deal of substance from the source material
@@mbb4302yeah, that’s common with a book adaptation. Kinda hard to translate subtext and internal monologues into film
@@ImTheReverseoh really?
Random Fun Facts:
Jodorowsky's Dune had Pink Floyd on the soundtrack.
David Lynch Turned down Return of the Jedi to do Dune
The Sci-fi Miniseries was shot by the same cinematographer who did Apocalypse Now. This is refenced by Denis in Dune pt 1 when introducing the Baron.
Rewatching Dune after watching Dune: Part Two a few times, I actually prefer it. It's fascinating to watch with the context of Part Two. Every line of dialogue carries so much more weight. I also like the aristocratic feel and think it flows better than Part Two. They're both a 10/10 though.
Only seen Part I and II:
2. Dune Part I 9/10
1. Dune Part II 9.5/10
I like em about the same lol would consider both to be among my top 60 favorite movies now…
I loved the 2000 miniseries. I watched it on my sisters bed when I was 15 or so, and the Children of Dune when they came out, and it was awesome. I've watched it several times since, and read the books many times too. It's still my favorite series. The actors were expressive, and you could believe their troubles and emotions. I'm biased, but don't see the same human-ness in the new movies, they're "awe inspiring" and such, but I haven't seen the heart.
yep it's my favorite too, wish they had bigger budget and newer technology... the cgi is awful but everything else is pretty great!
@@sanny78622 Yeah, the CGI was pretty bad, haha.
I agree, the new Dunes were pretty, but I did not find the characters at all believable. There was nothing special about Paul, no reason he should have been the chosen one. He didn't believe, his girlfriend didn't believe, so I didn't believe.
Your last sentence sums it up great!
@@leslies66 That's... actually just correct. Paul pretty much denies it constantly. Even when he assumes the leadership role, it's almost more that he's doing it out of desperation than anything else. Chani and his mother eventually gain much more faith in him than he ever has in himself.
3. Dune 1984-Because this movie isn’t as long as even the first part of Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune, this entire film feels like a cliff note version of fantastic source material, which doesn’t make for a satisfying experience
2. Dune: Part One-A fantastic introduction to this world that treats its audience with its political intrigue, large scale world building, and technical achievements, making for a movie I absolutely love and keep being drawn back towards
1. Dune: Part Two-An epic second half to this great story that has beats of a hero’s journey while challenging its audience at the same time, all with excellent performances, expansive world building, and complex character dynamics from beginning to end
I do plan to watch the miniseries adaptation of Dune over the next week, and possibly watch the Children of Dune miniseries as well. Because they’re both 4+ hours long, I wasn’t able to watch them in time for this video.
They’re good but being a sci-fi tv series the fx and costume budget isn’t great
@@domingorubies656 I’m expecting that. I’ll be watching them out of curiosity and wanting to experience more of Dune, not really because I think they’ll be great.
If you can ignore the sub par visual effects, sets and Costuming.
Children of Dune is actually really good.
The larger story of Dune actually starts to make sense and it's a truly unique and tragic story.
You can see that the creators had love for the source material.
And James McAvoy is just awsome.
Also there's a song in Children of Dune called Inama Nushif" and it's great.
Children of dune is actually really good
I had no idea about Dune until seeing it on HBO few years ago. Made it more enjoyable seeing this new world and creative peace for the first time and how great part 2 was in IMAX. Tried watching the 84’ Dune and it’s a tough watch. Interesting to see the ideas there that were in Dune pt 1 and 2.
The miniseries is my fav
The 1984 one is still my favorite 🤷🏼♂️
Korey Coleman level sponsor transition (compliment)
Ive only seen the recent movies and I have read the book. These movies have become some of my favorite films ever but this is what I think.
1. Part 2
2. Part 1
Honestly Dune Part 1 and 2 are just flat out fantastic.
1) Dune: Part II
2) Dune: Part I
3) Dune (miniseries)
4) Dune (1984)
Children of Dune is a really solid miniseries, to suffers from the same mistakes as the original, but also it kind of works, given the inherent weirdness and intrigue of the story. Hope you one day review it, Mr. Chandler. It’s definitely worth watching.
Alec Newman gives a much better performance in Children Of Dune as an older Paul than he did in the original mini-series
My Dune Franchise Ranking:
1. Dune: Part Two (2024) 10/10
2. Dune: Part One (2021) 10/10
3. Frank Herbert's Dune (2000) 9/10
4. Dune (1984) 8/10
5. Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (2003) 7/10
I love the book and felt the new ones represent the book the best, even with it changes
I read the book ages ago when I was in 8th grade in the early 90s and I definitely need to go back and read it again sometime soon. I will say that when I saw DV's Dune Part 1, it was my least favorite adaptation up to that point, and probably my least favorite DV movie. However, Dune Part 2 made Dune Part 1 a better movie when you have the context of the whole story DV is telling. Today, I would rank them as follows:
3. Dune Miniseries
2. Dune Part 1 and Part 2 (they are tied for me)
1. Dune 1984
I love every adaptation and I feel they are each focusing on different elements of the book and from different perspectives. Dune 1984 almost feels like watching a Shakespearean play, but it also feels so alien and surreal in tone that I feel like I'm looking through a portal into the vastly distant future of the setting - I also feel that this version of Paul was the most likeable/relatable.
In DV's Dune, I feel like we're watching a story more relatable to modern audiences, and there's a tradeoff that comes with that; it doesn't feel as futuristic, but has a more accessible immersion. It also feels the most coherent and epic.
The miniseries was made better as a result of the Children of Dune sequel, similar to how DV's Dune Part 1 was elevated by Part 2. It also featured a stunning color-pallette and some of the more interesting character/plot dynamics of the 3 versions and I really liked following Princess Irulan in particular through both miniseries.
I get the feeling that this will be divided between those who have read the book, and those who have not, lol. Of course some of each will still like the other, but my point is that right now everyone, literally everyone, is going on about how gorgeous Villeneuve's Dune movies are and so they take top spot on the lists. And they are gorgeous, no disagreement there, but that's what you expect from a Denis movie, he creates works of art rather than just a movie, he always has. However with Dune he has taken the characters, the places and some of the events from the book and then looked at them and decided he'd do his own thing, lol. So, I need two lists.
List One: How it looks:
1: Dune 2021/2024 (because they should be one film, not divided into two)
2: Dune 1984, the David Lynch version ( which was butchered in the editing room by the producers and Lynch was not allowed input at all)
3: Dune mini series
List Two: Faithfulness to the Book:
1: The mini series
2: Dune 1984 (the Spicediver Edition)
3: Dune 2021/2024
My ranking:
3. Dune (1984)
2. Dune (2021)
1. Dune: Part Two
These movies don’t miss
Literally half of them miss.
The dune miniseries also did a sequel in (2003) called children of dune in 3 parts so part 1 adapts the second novel dune messiah and parts 2 and 3 adapt the third book children of dune (2003) are you gonna check it out?
He said in the video that he would prefer to read the books or wait for the third movie before watching it
That might be the best company that has sponsored ur channel
Love Hans Zimmer, but there isn't much as far as theme to hang onto. I can only remember one. More sounds than music. The 1984 soundtrack is full of earworms by ToTo
The minstry would of been best cause its most accurate but its low budget kills it
I have not read the books yet, but I want to. My first exposure to this story was the 2021 movie and it's great; Part 2 is even better. I've tried 2/3 of the 1984 movie; it's just really strange and rushed.
I'm someone who found Dune very hard to follow. I didn't understand what was going at all really on but part 2 is apparently so amazing, I kinda wanna go see it. P.s. I think it's pretty guaranteed that Dune part 2 will dominate the oscars next year. It will be the new Oppenheimer
For me it’s best to worst it’s Denis 2 , Denis 1 , Sci-fi , Sci-Fi Children , Lynch
I've only seen the recent films
1. Dune Part 2
2. Dune 2021
you should watch david lynch’s film
@@joshmyers1324 not really, it’s inferior to the new ones
@@domingorubies656Even though I feel the same way. I feel like Lynch’s version is so weird that even though it’s not anywhere close to being as great as the DV films, it might still be fun to watch.
@@cooperwolfe5478 yeah , Sting as Feyd-Rautha has to be experienced at least once xd
Lynchs Dune does all the political intrigue stuff better than the other iterations. The sci fi series is most book accurate. But Villeneuves Dune is just incredible. It’s not even a question in my eyes.
Have you seen the Jodorovsky's documentary?
4: david lynchs dune: a cliff notes version of great source material that's a huge mess
3: dune miniseries a pretty good but not great version of dune
2: dune 2021: a mature adult sci Fi movie that is visually beautiful and great performances
1: dune part 2: an epic second half with immaculate production design epic action and great worldbuilding
I heard David Lynch turned down directing Return Of The Jedi to direct Dune. That’s an interesting choice.
Children of Dune (2003) adapts both the second and third dune novels together to tell a story. Both dune Messiah and children of dune. Denis Villeneuve is only adapting the first 2 books but rhe dune miniseries adaots the first 3 novels ehich i wish Denis Villeneuve would do.
Read the book my man. You’ll love it
Look at that WATCH!
Haven't seen the mini series you just kind-of trashed the one I grew up on lol. Guess I really need to watch the new version
I’ve only seen the newest 2 and I agree with your placement of them
3 and 4 are pretty much interchangeable atm
1. Dune miniseries
2. Dune Part 1
3. Dune Part 2
4. Dune 84
If Children of Dune could be on here, it would be #1
Isn’t the miniseries the one where Paul acts like a 9 year old?
@@benmorgan9748 If by "acts like a 9 year old", you mean randomly shouting like a child who's having some kind of temper tantrum, that would be the new one..
@@plo617 Nah, the miniseries sucks
@@benmorgan9748 ....okay
Villeneuve's Dune films are examples of a remake done right. It takes a weak film that had multiple limitations during the time it was made and makes it great. You do not always need to remake films that were already great and make inferior versions of them Disney!
1. Dune: Part (2024)
2. Dune (2021)
3. Dune (1984)
4. Dune (2000 Miniseries)
Read the book and I can't wait to read Dune Messiah in the near future
Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune round out the story. Heretics and Chapterhouse are many generations later, although still entertaining.
Looking foward to reading those too😎
Dune Part 2
Dune Part 1
Dune (1984)
If you rate them according to accuracy to the books the order would be Dune part 2 last David Lynch's Dune third Dune Part 1 second and the Sci Fi mini series would be number 1
I agree that for obvious reasons, the miniseries captures more of the story, but for me, the Villenueve adaption came the closest to immersing me in the same duniverse I imagined while reading the books
@@system0fadowner251 let me be very clear I love Denis vision of it but had to watch it a second time because first time i seen it i had book in mind and that through off my viewing since it deviates so far
@Daeduluus Yeah, it can be jarring if you go in with a certain idea, but when I realised what he was building towards, I decided to just let this adaption be it owns thing in my mind. imo, the changes worked better for a movie. It does raise some very interesting challenges and possibilities for Messiah, but if there's anybody I trust to nail it, it's Denis.
1. Dune Part II: 9/10
2. Dune Part I: 8/10
3. Dune Mini Series: 8/10
4. Dune 1984: 7/10
I predict Sean’s order will be my order, which is basically the only correct order 😅
Dune Part 2 (2024)
Dune (2021)
Dune (miniseries)
Dune 1984
(I personally would do the two seasons of the miniseries as separate items for a five item ranking, but they would both still be in their same place below Villneuve, and above Lynch)
I haven’t ever bothered with the 1984 version or SyFy series. Only after I saw Pt 2 did I become curious about the books, but never read more than a few chapters. Denis’s films are the only ones I’ve seen, and I admire the first more than I love it. Upon second watch in theaters right before Pt 2, I was surprised that I liked it more than the first time. Part 2 is a huge improvement, and even though these movies are not exactly my go-to for sci-fi/fantasy, they are the best in the genre since Jackson’s LOTR trilogy. On a story level, not as good by a long shot, but I still find the politics and motivations of everyone compelling. I’m sure we will get a Part 3.
5. Dune 84 is fun but the weakest.
4. Children of Dune
3. Dune 2000
2. Dune 2
1. Dune 2021
I prefer 1984 because the ending is different and Paul is a little bit sympathetic and there's fun to be had. Without needing to lead to the sequels, the "holy war" doesn't need to go beyond the planet. It just puts a bow on it and ends instead of having Paul just keeping on hammering the "I'm not a good guy" button. I think the new version, much like the book, is a very well-polished turd in that it's technically well-made but based on a set of PoVs I don't want to follow, so I don't care.
It's funny that you call it a "turd" just because you don't like the story 😂
@markai2002 Yes, a well-polished one! It's shiny and technically well-made, but I don’t like what's under the crust. I think it's an apt metaphor.
The intention is not to follow what Paul does at the end. It’s meant to create confliction bc we’ve been sympathizing with Paul all the way, until the end when he becomes the very thing he didn’t want to be. The message in the novel and the movie to not trust charismatic leaders and prophets bc they might lead to horrible outcomes.
@@1ntelligentDiscourse Just because you don't like what's "under the crust," doesn't mean it's a turd 💀
@Splockyy Yes. It's very effective at what it set out to do, if a little heavy-handed. I just don't want to be involved. I can wake up and live my own life if I want pessimism, hopelessness, and to follow the perspective of someone I hate. I don't need that from media.
Dennis Valenzuela comes through with a masterprize.
Denis Villanueve will stop at Dune 3 adapting Dune messiah he is not going to do the rest of the books
Am early Sean
4. Dune (1984)
3. Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000)
2. Dune (2021)
1. Dune Part 2 (2024)
I am probably the only person who doesn't really like the new movies and thinks they are super overrated. Great special effects and all the expensive blah blah, but they fucked up so many things story-wise and the casting was a fail in so many cases and it made me feel nothing, left no impact on me. The soundtrack is pretty great, how the tech looks and the looks of pretty much everything that's in the desert but otherwise it's a thumbs down for me. No feeling, no depth, the politics and mysticism aren't at the center of it, it feels empty and I couldn't care for any of the characters.
My fav is Children of Dune miniseries I think.

You're not fooling anyone pal...
Me when I want to be different:
CGI from the early 2000s already reached the level we have today. I mean, just look at Lord of the Rings.
The thing is that SciFy couldn't afford good CGI, so yeah... The miniseries look awkward. They're still great tho.
First comment
I must be the only one who thinks the new ones are bad and boring as hell
Objectively they aren’t bad , 6 Oscars ( 1 nomination for best picture) , 1 Golden Globe
Yes you are
Dune needs the big budget Game of Thrones series treatment. Just too much to load into a couple of movies. And Dune is supposed to be weird, a bit too watered down for the book readers
Omg youre so lame, whats the point of ranking if you have no concept for the source material???
This is a movie ranking he’s basing it on the quality of the film not necessarily on the material bc honestly sometimes it’s better to not follow the material sometimes
Knowledge of the source material only creates bias when discussing the objective quality of the films. Now, if he were to rerank them after having read the books, then his list might be different but then it’s pretty much just two different topics altogether.
@@richardperaza5083Absolutely & That is the Whole Point Of Dune With The Source Material
@@ImTheReverseYes indeed
I think the effects in the newer films look better, but the other two were both better films and better adaptations. The acting in the new films is shit. That's pretty much down to the actors and/or the direction. The miniseries is by far the best adaptation.
Best to worst.
Mini series - 1984 Dune - Dune pt2 - Dune pt1
Part one looked amazing. VERY good soundtrack. Good CGI. I also found it to be incredibly boring and miscast with wooden performances and a VERY underwhelming and tame Harkonnen introduction. I kept having flashes of The Island of Dr. Moreau 1996.
The Baron simply wasn't dark enough. The son not dumb and mean enough. The other son not arrogant enough.
At times it felt like the cast was at a table reading of the script. Whenever famous lines from the past came up they seemed purposely understated. There we said quote. Lets move on. This movie is simply over hyped and WAY underwhelming. Both movies look absolutely amazing but slow panoramic pan shots and edgy music are not what makes movies amazing when the story is lacking substance and cohesion. It's good but both movies are one and dones and I don't think they are going to age well nor reach anything near the cult status of what's come before after the same amount of time has passed. Had they gone the miniseries route I think they would have fared better.
C+ to B-, 75%, 6.5 out of 10 take your pick.
All of these are terrible. Paul is not an interesting character. Timothy chalagay is not a compelling actor, he is just a little nerd. Is this first book suppose to be the phantom menace? Are there more compelling stories in later books? Does anything ever happen? The worms are unneeded-they make this a joke. A cgi mess.
