    Thank you Ilona. You apply the stiffener just as I've been shown by well known Milliners and hatters using the round brush and applying in circles. Also applying on the inside.

    Hi 👋 Ilona! What a brilliant video. You did an excellent job explaining each step in detail and including all the tips & tricks on paint brushes, safety and storage of the solution is just the information a milliner needs when getting started.
    Where were you when I was teaching myself millinery 12 years ago 😹. You should be very proud of yourself and your channel! Keep up the amazing work and continue inspiring budding milliners. We need more lovely people like you on CZcams. Looking forward to watching what you come up with next. Best! 💝

      Hi Bernice, I'm afraid there is nothing to film a tutorial about here. The shape of this hat is all in the block - you just need to find the right shape. You can show this video to your local block maker, and they should be able to make you a shape like this. I do have a tutorial on how I finish the inside edge of this hat which you can find here: czcams.com/video/u9jio96C5qU/video.html

I have a first class degree in Graphic Communication Design and I'm also a professional dancer (or at least I was before the pandemic 😅.

    Dear I made a wool felt hat ~dome crown , bit slant 1:07 and 57cm,but my hat look much bigger than I saw the hats in the store, I think 57 is normal size but why ? I was wondering if I gave too much stiffeners, it’s very hard! Thank you.

    I think PVA is used in just about everything these days, I was struck by how alike doll wig and Dior Net making were except you use tulle as the net over the cling film and PVA to stiffen it and you can either glue the hair to the base or stitch the wefts on. It looks, and probably feels just the same as one of the stiffened nets you made. I was wondering if PVA could be used on a larger scale to stiffen net bases...I might give that a whirl but I am unsure of the nets you used. I know they should be cotton, I might experiment with that.

    Ilona, thank you for such a lovely video. Would a hat stiffened with this chemical stiffener and then steam blocked hold its shape if exposed to rain?

    • @ByIlonaMillinery
      @ByIlonaMillinery  Před rokem

      Hello, I am so glad you liked this video, I have an updated video of how to use chemical hat stiffeners here: czcams.com/video/7EQL2EW_8mw/video.html
      In answer to your question, I always say that a hat should not be worn in the rain. Felt may loose not only its shape, but also fade its colour. The biggest problem is that if it gets too saturated with water, it will loose its structure, and then dry in a collapsed state. If you have the right hat block to re-set it, then its ok. But if you don't, the hat will stay misshapen until it is steamed and dried back into the correct original form.

      Hello, If you have a Victorian collar, I would recommend you use Victorian techniques to keep it nice and stiff. A starch stiffener should be used. I have a video on this here: czcams.com/video/nnP7TS_0ovM/video.html

    Hey Ilona! I'm a hobby hatter and have had problems with stiffening ever since I started. I have only worked with straw so far, but want to start with felt soon so this was really helpful! Just a question: Is there any secret to getting straw more "smooth" when using stiffeners? My straw hats are stiff, but really uncomfortable to touch. Thank you for all your videos and greetings from Germany! 🎩

    • @ByIlonaMillinery
      @ByIlonaMillinery  Před rokem +1

      Hello! Stiffening can be very hard! I know exactly what you mean about your straw problems, I used to have the same issue. This video may help you out: czcams.com/video/7EQL2EW_8mw/video.html
      Also, be sure to check out all my felt videos, I've got an explainer of different types of felt right here: czcams.com/video/n5RPnpsVpdA/video.html
      PS, if you want smooth straw, try to handle it as little as possible when you block it, a light touch is what you are looking for. You can also try to gently iron the surface of your straw while it is still on a block using a pressing cloth and a steam iron.
