    A lot of new condos are gonna sit empty in Honolulu. They’ll write it off as a rental property loss. This gives more power to hotels to keep raising their prices.

    Wailea doesn’t have very many STR’s and it’s soooo “affordable” 😂 these STR’s are mostly beach front. They will never be affordable. It’ll just limit tourism.

    Short Term rentals aren't just a problem in Hawaii. They are destroying Paris, Athens, Rome, Mexico City, and many other high tourist area. It is amazing how it is negatively affecting places. However, they should allow rentals in some way. I don't know enough about this bill, but maybe one per person or something or maybe if someone wants to partially open up their home. It is a good way for some to subsidize their high cost of living in Hawaii.

    Loss of thousands of tourists in a tourist based economy seems risky. How many tourists are housed in 7000 short term rentals annually on Maui? What percentage will go to a hotel/resort as an alternative? Does our Tourism Dept have these numbers?

      Most people I either work with or neighbors will not pay $600-$1000 a night to stay in resorts on Hawaii. Most probably could, but most will find alternate vacation destinations. I just got back from Japan....stayed in some really nice places less than $130 a night.

      I don't know why they don't outright say that it's Airbnb. Instead, they say "short term rental".

    SAD hurting these small business …Hotels love this and now can raise there hotel rates because of less competition…
    Many of the short term rentals are your average local owner trying to make a bigger income..

      No they are not. They are more often owned by mainlanders, foreigners and corporations buying everything up as an investment , not a home. This is a first step to finding a balance. Having some BnBs is okay, but like everything it was’t monitored and it got far out of control.

    wtf did they say that STR business owners own about 15-20 properties on average??? Jeebus. That’s messed up. Most of my classmates all moved away to the mainland because they didn’t want to live with their parents anymore or job relocation. Too expensive to stay here.

    • @HKim0072
      @HKim0072 Před 3 měsíci +1

      That's more emblematic of the job market in Hawaii. I moved away after I graduated because I wanted to work for a corporation. None of those types of jobs in Hawaii.

      Only 5% of the housing in Hawaii are vacation rentals. Converting them to long term rentals will not solve the affordable housing problem. Democrats are diverting attention away from their harmful and incompetent legislation and policies that have doubled the cost of housing.

    somethings fishy here, first he Lahaina fire and now this. What is driving this? What is there goal? Are they in the pockets of the big developers who will build new resorts to fill the need left vacant by eliminating STRs?

  • @alexdughman

    I really don't know the specifics on this Bill, however upfront, it seems as if it is infringing on a home owner's rights. Just as if I owned a car I wanted to rent out I could do so on my own terms. I'd be curious to see if they ultimately reverse this bill in time due to stats showing loss of local business. Short term rentals offer new faces to come and spend money locally. My opinion may not be a popular one however, given face value it's what it seems.

    • @bsmbB
      @bsmbB Před 3 měsíci +1

      No because they already declared hawaii has a housing crisis so this bill combats that problem. We can't keep building home in hawaii or there won't be enough water to supply them in the future or they need to make desalination more efficient

      The property you are speaking of is a HOME. You can't run a hotel in a residential neighborhood. If you want a property zoned for a hotel operation, go purchase it and run a hotel. There are people who bought property with a hone and want to live in a neighborhood to raise their family that is safe without strangers in and out and many of them partying.

  • @jerrymylove1754
    @jerrymylove1754 Před 3 měsíci +4

    You could just limit it to owners that were born in Hawaii or live in Hawaii. That would take care of a huge portion of them.

    • @Whatareyoudoingwithyourlife

      or the government could stop developers from building million dollar plus condos and build affordable housing for the lower incomd & middle class. But, the politicans dont want that.
      Now the home owers of these homes/condos will just increase the yearly annual rental price to pay their morgage. see how this works. the government NEVER fixes anything...that is not their job. Their job is to take all the citizens money for this tax that tax etc.

      @@user-eh8yz6ko3t I’m saying as far as short term permits. It takes care of two bird with one stone.
      The first is that it will reduce the amount of supply allowed to be rented on Airbnb.
      The second is that it will still allow locals to use the service and also bring down the price of rentals.

    The first three months after the bill passes it’ll help people find places to rent. I have six rentals in prime Kona town and when Covid first started all the Airbnbs switched to long term rentals and I had to charge less money for one of my newly available rentals. But after about three months all the inventory was gone and prices went right back up in fact they went even higher. I could do Airbnbs and probably make more money but I’d rather do long term because I feel like it’s better for the community. I used to be mad at the planning department and the building departments for making housing so expensive. I used to do construction and none of our employees could afford housing. But then I built a bunch of rentals and now I make lots of money because of the strict regulations and I don’t worry about it anymore. All the anti development laws just make me richer. My parents are Boomers and my Mom has a lot of money and land and rich friends and tons of free time. My Mom and all her private school friends get involved politically to fight every new development and they attend all the hearings. Just a bunch of NIMBYs! Nowadays the only new developments in Kona are Ultra rich high end homes and Ultra poor high density ghettos. It’s the death of the middle class.

    The problem is so obvious it’s about time the powers that be start to address this. The final move will be removing non Hawaii born people from 2nd home ownership. And giving the Hawaii born residents a rent to own agreement at a reasonable set price. Mahalo Nui Loa

      The problem causing all of Hawaii's castrophic disasters is incompetent, corrupt and incorrigible Demo Rats. Only fools believe seizing private property is going to address Hawaii's Demo Rat Plaque that has caused two thirds of all residents born and raised in Hawaii (Native Hawaiians) to flee Hawaii's Demo Rat Hell. The problem, Hawaii's Demo Rats are causing all of Hawaii's castrophic disasters and does not have any viable solutions to Hawaii's Demo Rats caused disasters. Further, the problem is never the solution and to believe otherwise means you are desperate or delusional or just plain foolish. In fact, Hawaii's Demo Rats failed and unsustainable communist agenda will continue to cause even more Hawaii residents to flee for their lives or perish in Hawaii's Demo Rat Hell.

      That's a violation of the US constitution.
      Better to have the government stop allowing mulit million dollar condo & homes to be built. Instead allow for more low income & middle class affordable homes to be built.

    Hopefully Hawaii is a microcosm of what will happen to STRs aroundthe world. Homes are to be lived in and not to be rent out like hotels. Hotels exist for a reason.
