Dude, where have you been hiding in the algorithm all this time? Excuse me, drummer of FEAR? Holy carp man. I am 52, OG fear fan, 80s teen, left handed and open handed drummer since I was 13. I really like your channel, I appreciate what you do here very much.
Simon Phillips of course 😉. The genre's the man spans, and the sheer amount of recordings he's on, is amazing. The Sin After Sin album wouldn't be the same without his open style of playing (Sinner).
Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Matt Cameron (on live versions of Slaves & Bulldozers and Somewhere) and of course Gadd on the 50 Ways groove are favorite examples. I've played open-handed since the day I picked up the sticks. As a lefty on a righty set, it just happened that way.
I learnt to play watching Slim Jim Phantom, from the Stray Cats! So I only can play open handed and standing up 😀

I don't have a favorite open-handed drummer however the drummers I had admire that play open-handed are:
Quinton "Q" Robinson, Will Kennedy, Billy Cobham, Chris Johnson, Simon Phillips, and Gorden Campbell.
I'm left handed and can play left hand over, but I prefer to play open, I started out playing that way.
My 2 faves would have to be Gene and LC.

How casually you mention learning from the drummer of such a seminal group... 😂
At the time he taught lessons at Rhythm Traders in PDX; $40 for a one hour lesson and he might still do!
Too bad you didn’t include my favorite open handed drummer. Josh Eppard from the band Coheed & Cambria. You should check him out. But you did include some other great drummers too
John French aka Drumbo from Beefheart and the Magic Band usually plays open but not in a hi hat driven style so maybe it doesn't really apply to him
